Obnoxious, definately. Overrated? Yes in the grand scheme, but probably the best of a generation?
Hmm...interesting. Best of a generation?
Personally I disagree. They captured a very specific moment very well with their frst two albums. But I can't listen back to most of that stuff now without thinking how crude and derivative it all was. There were, without doubt flashes of genius, and some of the B-sides were brilliant. But I don't think they can warrant that title given how mediocre everything else has been.
So what other options are there?
Okay, so if you define that generation as bands who were prolific/at their peak from 1994-2000, what are the other options?
Radiohead? Have continued getting better from day 1 and all but 1 of their albums leave anything by Oasis in the shade.
Pulp? Eminently more listenable today.
Suede? Same problem as Oasis, as after albums 1&2 they started relying on a formula (for Liam's "Sheeeeyyyyyiiiiinnnnneee" read Brett's witterings about gasoline and various chemicals...boring). But those albums I thnk had much more about them, and have aged better.
Super Furries? Brilliant Welsh mayhem, and still love all of their stuff. Even their Welsh language B-sides that I don't understand!!
Seahorses?
Shed Seven? Joking of course!!
What about the whole Blur vs. Oasis thing? Apart from The Great Escape - the point Blur turned into their own parody - and 13, their albums all look pretty decent now. I certainly skip through less of their songs when they come on the MP3 in the car compared to Oasis.
There are probable other contenders. Ive only looked at some of the other 'big' bands that fell into the BritPop thing. With the possible exceptions of Blur and Radiohead, they never matched Oasis for size of following - and even Oasis probably still has the edge over those two - but I think they could all fight them on a level playing field when it comes to how good the music was. And in some cases win.
But Assume the whole generation thing was restricted to this country, otherwise we could also include the likes of the Foo Fighters, who I think top Oasis in quality and mass appeal. (Everlong is one of the best songs ever. Fact.)
Anyway, starting point for a good debate...
Funhouse - Pink's new album blasting out just now, very upbeat, I like it :)
Softie, IMHO the band that 'got away' from that period are Mansun. Six is one of the most intriguing and original albums since TLLDOB.
Oh, and I agree about the Foos.....and the Glen Campbell cover of Times Like These is surprisingly enjoyable!
Yeah, saw them in a great gig once at the Shepherds Bush Empire. Never really broke through though did they?
Couple of other tiddlers of the time who should have really done better: Kenickie, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci & Uresei Yatsura.
My favourite band at the time, and still one of my all time faves: Belle & Sebastian. Had quite a soft spot for Ooberman as well.
Oh, and not good with initials: TLLDOB?
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.
For folks in Chester and the surrounding environs, Mansun were WAY bigger than Oasis etc etc!:p But, as I said, they were one that got away. Sad that a band with real talent never made the same impact as a bunch of no-hopers like Shed Seven.
As you like Gorky and The Furries, have you checked out Euros Childs?
acquiesce . oasis b side which would have been a huge a side . got my tickets for ricoh arena . obnoxious but honest .
Yeah - bit hit and miss live. Saw them 3 times. Royal Albert Hall (2000) and Kentish Town Forum (1999 I think) - Really good. Spot on performance, engaged with the audience, good selection of tunes from all albums, their EPs: if you wanted to hear it, they played it. Final time at LA2 (2003) was very poor, at the end they admitted they'd not been up for it that night. That's nice to hear when you've paid £20 a ticket!! Night was salvaged by their support: a pre-first single Franz Ferdinand. They rocked, though having said that, not the biggest fan of theirs.
Not really, though have heard good things about them. Will have to dig a few tunes out of Limewire!!
just listening to the national now, awesome
Scouting for Girls getting belted out today, just been trying to collate my music and back up. Still amazes me just how much music can fit on a 1TB storage device compared to 12 vinyls per black bin bag!!!
Weeping Tile, a Canadian Band from Kingston, Ontario....brilliant sadly naye longer together...
Earlier this afternoon Urban Hymns, The Verve.....Excellent....
Agree totally with earlier posts, The Masterplan for me probably the best Oasis album......well erm Definatley Maybe ;)

Last night, while Mrs G was out, I played the new parralox album 'electricity'. ANd then I went all 70s funk and put on a Double Exposure cd.
Can say i particularly love this song....but this song is immense.
The Streets - Weak become Heroes.
Its the piano in the background and the chorus that does it for me.;)
In a mellow nostalgic mood tonight, possibly enhanced by a some Leffe Blonde and Duvel. Hence playing a bit of Teenage Fanclub, some old reggae music, Beach Boys, 2or3 songs off Lou Reed's Transformer including the sublime Satellite of Love. I can feel a bit of Dusty coming on now with another bottle of Duvel :)
You ever tried drum and bass DT?;)
im on a bit of dance and RnB
Anyone here got a USB turntable? I've got a certain album, on vinyl, that I used to realy enjoy back in my more hedonistic days.

On the radio tonight at work, took me back to the 80's and had me dancing round my spanner and molegrips (not allowed to take my handbag to work);)
Veedon Fleece by Van Morrison. Not one of his best known albums but right up there with Moondance and Astral Weeks for me. Great songs and fantastic vocals from The Man ;)
The Street Dogs.
One word: AWESOME.
