I have to vehemently disagree with Enter the Dragon as the best martial arts film; its complete and utter rubbish compared to virtually any other martial arts film nowadays. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon kills it dead for beauty, the fight scenes and even has a fantastic story too as does The House of the Flying Daggers. For pure action and unbelievably choreographed fighting watch The Raid!
I love Enter the Dragon, the fight scenes are marvellous. I was not that keen on Crouching etc etc I thought it was a tad manufactured. Enter the Dragon has a very raw feel to it, it is dated but I like that about it. My fave of all time is Police Story with Jackie Chan, fabulous. The quality of the dubbing varies though depending whether you watch an old video copy or a newer DVD release. I would recommend EARLY Jackie, it all get's a bit Hollywood around Rush Hour.
:).......and you're always right. I've noticed that about you.
The Hobbit, quite enjoyable. Recommended for the visuals alone.
Anybody mentioned Sightseers yet ? Very funny.

Sorry, I'll stop now.
Haha. Just spotted this. Of course I'm not (some would say never :) ) always right..... but, equally of course, I'm absolutely right regarding Enter the Dragon. And I'm old enough to have seen it two or three times not long after it first came out and that was when I was becoming a bit of a kung fu expert myself (cough). "Bull-sheeat Mr Han man"
Killing them softly - not what I expected to be honest. Relatively short film, that doesn't really do that much but still found it enjoyable. Pitt was good, and always like to see Gandolfini.
the hobbit last night, really enjoyable and sticks close to the book!
Hey Stolly
With regards to martial arts movies - i'm not going to argue with you (even though its tempting given Fairy's comment!!) - note that i said Enter the Dragon was arguably one of the best, not the best - which your vehemtly disagreed with! I said it was one of the best for the reasons Fairy said - it was one of the original and best Bruce movies and it has a certain 'rawness'. Yes, some of it is nostalgia and of course there are more modern martial arts movies with more impressive choreography and fight scenes, all the ones you have mentioned. to be honest i just came across the Bruce Lee movie clips on youtube and thought i'd post one here to see if anyone was interested!...
best wishes

I watched it on SKY box office tonight - half price £1-99p  Plenty of running in the hills again :D and it seemed shorter than the 3 hours so I must have enjoyed it. Its so long since I read The Hobbit that I couldn't remember most of it anyway so it all seemed new to me.
Once again Gollum/Andy Serkis steals the scene and probably the film :D
"It’s got to ask uss a question, my preciouss, yes, yess, yess. Jusst one more question to guess, yes, yess."
I bought it on BlueRay, earlier this week and have watched it twice.
Total Recall....Total Rubbish:thunbdown:
Just found out today Ray Harryhausen died last week http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/t...gebit/sad2.gif Probably the first "modern" special effects exponent without the aid of CGI.

Thanks for all the movie memories Ray
The Athlete
Ethiopian made film about Abebe Bikila, the first Ethiopian to win Olympic Gold and the first athlete to win back to back Olympic marathon titles. The film focuses on his later life after he failed to finish the 1968 Olympic marathon in Mexico and the car crash that left him partially paralyzed. Much of the early part of the film features the Volkswagen Beetle in which he crashed, presented to him by Emperor Haile Selassie after his second Olympic victory.
I watched 'Premium Rush' at the weekend. If you ride a "fixie" with no brakes then this is the film for you. Speaking as a single speeder who has never considered taking the extra fixie step (though with brakes!) I am still not going to take it
I didn't know when I started watching it what the bike types were till Joseph Gordon-Levitt started to pedal the bike backwards and the penny dropped but it was still later when I noticed he didn't have any brakes either. He obviously did the general riding himself and the outtake at the end showing a smashed rear window of a car and Joseph with blood on him hinted at a few mishaps making the film.
Not much of a story but good bike chase action round the streets of New York
I watched Argo last night. The Ben Afleck pic on the rescue attempt on 6 Americans in Iran.
I remember the other hostages that the Iranians took prisoner but I didn't know about these
six who were separate. Fantastic plot made all the more so because it was true!
think I'll be watching Argo soon - Lady Slugge's seen it, raved about it and now wants to watch it again on DVD...
I watched Somewhere last night on Film 4 - "slow" and "minimal" don't even come close to describing it - makes Lost In Translation look like Kung Fu Panda - I was transfixed by it
Midnight in Paris for me. Charming and humourous. 7 out of 10.
Decided to push my intellectual boundaries by watching 'Despicable Me'
Thoroughly enjoyable.
Despicable Me is superb. Also in the same vein Up is completely brilliant, How to Train your Dragon superbly brilliant and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs brilliantly superb. All of these films are real favourites of my 24 year old daughter who is a film expert (of sorts), although I draw the line at Gnomeo and Juliet another of her top tips :)
Up is a cracking movie.
Made my folks watch it a while back, my Mum was all confused as to why I wanted to watch a kids cartoon.
She was wiping tears from her eyes within 5 minutes and loved the film by then end.
so
A Field In England
what's that all about?
13 Assassins on Film4 now. :)
Thank you Pilgrim for reminding me about this thread.
"Untouchable" (French with subtitles) 7/10. Touching but never really delivered.
It stars that bloke out of Tell no-one. Another French film that I'd give 9/10.
Incidentally, I watched Slumdog Millionaire the other day. I had avoided this film, thinking "it's about a guy from the slums who goes on who wants to a millionaire - that sounds rubbish". But it's really good. If you've avoided it like I had, I'd advise you to watch it. 8/10 :)
I had this at work today on a loo break.Quote:

Donnie Darko on the Horror Channel last night.
The Devil's Backbone on the Horror channel tonight.
They're coming along.
Lincoln - Some good performances but found the film a bit hard going. It was sort of like an episode of The West Wing (which I loved) only slowed right down.
Ditto on Lincoln
Only god forgives - You could easily be forgiven for thinking this was a Lynch film, however it clearly isn't. Whilst I enjoyed it, it did come across as trying a little bit too hard to be weird - the dedication to Alejandro Jodorowski in the credits could be the explanation for this. It's nothing like what the trailers lead you to believe, but if you either enjoy a weird film or you're a fan of Gossling it's worth a watch.
Also watched Wunderlust - another cracker from Judd Apatow, very funny and well worth a watch if you;ve enjoyed his previous work.
Blue valentine - Good, but pretty depressing
Super 8.
Entertaining, which is always a very good thing in a film, though think I usually prefer thought provoking.
Sidekick kids steal the show though, main kid the most forgettable of the group. The one with the firecracker fixation gets the best lines.
