Obviously he will be in, as he is the best player that is currently available to represent England. Whether he should play is another matter and I'm sure the cricket authorities will be scurrying around trying to find the best way to brush the incident under the carpet.
I didn't really follow the trial, but he was found not-guilty yeah. In which case the incidents in question shouldn't be held against him. If the court has decided he didn't break any laws then what he gets up to is his business*.
If he is fit and able to play* and better than alternative available players for his position then he should play.
*Of course getting involved in such incidents could impair his ability to play, he might be a better player if he wasn't up to all hours drinking, but again that's his business whether he wants to live "clean" and (potentially) be better or live "fast" and play as well as he can.
Don't think Freddy, Goughy or Botham were Angeles either.
Stokes has done wrong. But how many trials or discipline hears should a person have?
Not guilty is not the same as innocent. It just means the jury were not sure of his guilt beyond reasonable doubt. As is said by legal representatives, if you think they were probably guilty, that is not enough, if guilt is only felt to be probable, then the verdict should be not guilty.
As to whether cricketers should go out drinking and brawling at all hours ....
My kind of cricketer:
John Michael Brearley OBE captained Cambridge University, Middlesex, and England. He captained the international side in 31 of his 39 Test matches, winning 17 and losing only 4.
Education: St John's College Cambridge
After his cricket career was over he practised as a psychoanalyst but I am unaware if he ever treated overpaid, drunken thugs.
England need 520 runs
Or
Bat for over 2 full days
2-1 in the series.
Looks like the week off hasn't improved out batting ability - not looking good for the rest of the series!
Cook fails again.
How many changes does he get?
Changes or chances?
Two chances
I was thinking of first and second innings
Yes, good point. I'd say we'll only bat once, but that patently isn't going to happen. It's amazing that England can win a series against the best team in the world with such a dysfunctional top order. That shows the benefit of home conditions.
What's going to happen in the AC (after Cook) era - the question is now: who's the best player to partner Keaton Jennings? !!
Have a look at the batting averages in county cricket and pick blokes in form.
Cook was very good in his time but has been very poor in the last 35 outings.
If he hung around at the crease for as long as he's hung round the team he might have lasted longer.
PS i wouldn't pick him for the last test. The series is won give youth a chance.
And miss the chance for England fans to say farewell to a modern great who's served England so well over a decade? You're a hard, unsentimental man, Stagger. ;)
The unhelpful thing is that the conditions at the Oval will be nothing like those in the following test matches (in Sri Lanka).
Oh yeah. Cook behind the banning of KP!!!!
He has a lot to answer for along with Strauss and Flower.
At least he hadn’t done what Alec Stewart did ie have a farewell series after saying he was re-tiring from playing
A good ton by Root yesterday put England in a strong position in this test.
Oh dear. The home side only needs 82 with 5 wickets remaining.
First series whitewash away in Sri Lanka for England. People are seeing it as a vindication of Root's aggressive style of batting.
Certainly a great achievement, whatever comes next.
I'm just reading my last post. Perhaps we need sensible batting after all. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/scorecard/ECKO44296
Nice to see Jennings top scoring!!
Dire.
For professionals to perform like that is shameful.
They think every game is a 20 20 and the bat must touch the ball on each occasion.
Should Stuart Broad have been picked?
Bring back Alistair Cook!
And to think that the MCC do not think the West Indies are good enough opposition to give them 5 Test Matches. What arrogance.
Yes, and England were offered a proper 4-day warm up match but turned it down!! You couldn't make this up.
In the real world, sacked in the morning springs to mind.
OVER paid un achievers .
I totally agree Stagger.
Isn't it great that the West Indies seem to have sorted out their internal wranglings and are playing decent Test Cricket again.
Great to see Windies back at the proper game but bitterly disappointing for England fans
Just gunner watch a couple of overs of the 1 day test match.
Nice win by England to wrap up the series
Yes, they look good. Nice to see local lad Rashid in among things.
Looking a fair start for England in the Ashes.
Spoke too soon. The cheat has knocked a ton👎
Yes, a glorious century in tricky conditions under immense pressure. You have to hand it to him - unless you're English that is. Let's see how our batsmen do against their attack now. It's finely balanced. Also a test for the Aussie bowlers to exploit English conditions. I see they dropped Starc and Hazelwood - a bold move.
The loss of Jimmy Anderson to injury was probably crucial as England ran out of ideas. With him likely out of the attack for the second innings and Australia now with a reasonable total on the board, it will be difficult to win from here.
Big day in the series today
I'm not so sure. A good day's batting today could put England in a great position. Of course, that's easier said than done. Let's see how much my words come back to haunt me by this evening. I'm thinking 290-6 by the close, with Stokes still in. Is that unrealistic?
