Danbeert, before last nights programme, I would have tended to agree wth you about Genesis. A bit like a damp sunday afternoon in Bognor...terribly english but somewhat wet, grey and unmemorable. But after seeing that remarkable footage of Gabriel at the peak of his costume phase, they certainly had something. He presaged New Romantic face painting by 10 years and Wayne Coyne's onstage theatrics and love of the bizarre by 25 years. Anyone who likes Elbow will find much to admire and any bands that play to a classical structure will have to admit to the Genesis influence.
Post Gabriel, I agree, they sank into a tacky commercial mess with only a few highlights after Trick of The Tail
