I'll be marshalling on top of Coniston Old Man so I hope the weather is better than at Grisedale Horseshoe today - the marshals on St Sunday Crag deserved a medal for staying up there in conditions like that!
Leaf,
Whatever the weather, any marshall should enjoy a tipple in the Newfield after the race. See you there.
Indeed - I look forward to it.
Reccied most of the route yesterday. Over past Tranearth Quarry and Walna Scar from Coniston to Seathwaite and the race route, then Seathwaite Tarn, Grey Friar, etc. passed by OK until White Pike. As I wanted to end up back in Coniston and as the final section will most likely be in private intake fields anyway, I decided to return via Broughton Moor. After what seemed like a couple of hours later I'd emerged onto Hummer Lane and made a beeline for the Wilson Arms for a 'recovery drink'. What had looked like innocuous heathery ground was felled woodland with brash, stumps, logs, boulders, marsh, etc. I think I'd still be there if I hadn't followed some deer tracks.
The descent into the Duddon is always very wet BUT should anybody decide to take a high line to the old quarries then use them as a 'handrail' to the last checkpoint then BEWARE because the drop into the big hole is scary and dangerous. My tip would be to descend early from White Pike and contour across safely.
Looking forward to this one as it is one of my training runs. Going to enjoy a few drinks after too.
MWIS forecast looking interesting:
'South or southwesterly 40 to 60mph with gusts to 80mph.
Considerable locally severe buffeting with mobility severely restricted where exposed.'
Should be challenging!
Updated forecast has improved: 35 - 45 mph winds, gusting to 70 mph, but later in the day. Early morning rain should clear to leave blustery showers.
See you there!
The wind turned out to be not too bad, but still felt like I'd been in the washing machine.
Thanks to all the marshals for waiting for me!
“I’m home darling”
Mrs DFTS: “How’d it go?”
“I was 11th!”
Mrs DFTS: “Out of how many?”
“You really don’t want to know that…”
