any snow up there yet? Meant to be reccying Ennerdale this weekend.
Been away in Wales and haven't checked out on the tops but going by Leafs post I wouldn't think Ennerdale is any different.
It looks patchy on the High Stile ridge but the drifts will be really deep.

Snow use avoiding the white stuff.

The worst bits were descending off Skiddaw towards Great Calva - snow was simply too deep and soft to be able to run down. Climbing Great Calva wasn't good either - the heather was showing through the snow but didn't make it any easier to climb - either we sank into the deep snow or into the deep heather!
However, crossing the Caldew was OK - our feet were so cold by then that the water didn't make much difference!
Snow all the way up to the top of Blencathra, but then, strangely, parts of the path up from Foule Crag and along the summit plateau were clear of snow. In other parts there were deep drifts.
Very poor visibility and all the snow caused us to abandon plans to descend Halls Fell Ridge and continue southwards, so we ran back to Keswick instead. No snow below the Blencathra visitors centre.
We followed the studmarks of two other runners though, who apparently did go down Halls Fell Ridge. We met Denise & Dale (Moorlander) who'd come up that way too - with microspikes on.
Thanks for that, made the better decision getting the climbing elsewhere I guess but it's not the same :o hope it clears up and sharpish!!

This is Scafell Pike summit trig point on Saturday, plenty of snow up there.
Makes you wonder how they got on with just one boot??

Re: Lakes Summit Snow Report
Ran ennerdale route yesterday - the snow in patches made it harder work, especially the Haystacks to Scoat Fell stretch, but it was intermittent and not deep.
It had thawed over the weekend - well, it was a lot worse on the Grisedale Pike-Hobcarton-Whiteside ridge when I ran over to Buttermere on Friday. That was a great day in the end, cleared up a treat and all of a sudden was standing atop Hopegill Head all alone in a foot of snow and the sun beating down
It was lashing down as I left Keswick this morning, so unless it was falling as snow on higher ground it might all have been washed away by now.
-
Re: Lakes Summit Snow Report
Yes it was lashing down - the bogs are back - wet, wet ,wet describes Mondays conditions quite well.

It stopped late afternoon and tops cleared, no fresh snow and a lot of the snow from last week is going

Re: Lakes Summit Snow Report
Was on Blencathra this morning - some large patches of mostly soft snow still left in places, only really a problem if you prefer unorthodox routes, had to kick a few steps to get out of the top of one of the cols but otherwise pretty much OK.

Great Dodd and Clough Head had a few patches of snow on them this morning and these were melting. Unless weather changes dramatically I expect they'll be gone by the weekend

Re: Lakes Summit Snow Report
Couldn't really say (top 500' or so was in the clag so I didn't get much of a view across) - I suspect the Dodds will be very similar to Blencathra. Improving forecast all week now - could all be gone by Saturday.

Thanks both, that's good news! Not often I pray for rain!

Re: Lakes Summit Snow Report
Slightly off topic (by about 250 miles), this link was posted on UKC http://www.aperturefirst.org/index.php?showimage=1093
It's a stunning 360 degree panorama from the summit of Stob Coire Nan Lochan above Glencoe. Not surprisingly it's still rather wintery looking.

Re: Lakes Summit Snow Report
Lots of snow above c1500-2000ft in the Ogwen Valley over the weekend

Lords Rake is still full of snow, was up there today...no new footprints there either, fell or crampons so guessing not many have been this way on recent recce's or rounds?? Not sure I fancy it to be honest, you can get further down to the foot of the gulley than you could 3 weeks or so ago but this stuff will be here for a while yet I think.

Think your talking about not actually visiting the tarn. maybe 60/ 80ft above it. Ive scrambled there before. Ive also gone to high as well and there is one awkward spot.
Perhaps a couple of mins quicker if you get it spot on. It can be trickier in the wet mind. Was there a lot of wet moss in places Yiannis.
-
Re: Lakes Summit Snow Report
Nothing was wet it was dry all over but you could see where it could be tricky if it was wet i.e rocks covered in dry black stuff (sorry don't kow the technical term for whatever plant life it was)
You're right we went no where near the tarn, a much more direct route that is very do-able just need to find the 'turn' at the right point to avoid any unnecessary scrambling

My thoughts too. I'm just glad I chose not to cycle to work this morning. It was fine in Kendal first thing.

Re: Lakes Summit Snow Report
Looked like a fair covering on Skiddaw, Blencathra and Clough Head this morning but seems like its gone now. Stunning evening atm

Re: Lakes Summit Snow Report
In my sun-addled state last Saturday I forgot to look over from SP summit to check what Lord's Rake was looking like ... still full of snow the previous weekend, but surely last weekend's weather must have precipitated a melt? Any updates appreciated.

Re: Lakes Summit Snow Report
Just wondering if anyone has been out on the fells today? Is there snow and if so how much??
-
Re: Lakes Summit Snow Report
I went round Kentmere this morning Gaz, very little snow, just odd patches, lot of ice on the water courses but otherwise lovely running.
-
Re: Lakes Summit Snow Report
Out on the Langdales today - everything frozen, but hardly any snow.
Patchy stuff on Bowfell, but there looked to be a fair covering on Helvellyn above about 2700'.
-
Re: Lakes Summit Snow Report
Went up greenside mines, sticks pass over hellvelyn and back down via grisedale tarn. There is actually more snow at low level, to the east, than on the tops. Big H has snow over it with cornices forming, but mostly runnable. The dodgiest bit was coming down from grisedale tarn where the path is notoriously wet and hence patches of ice were in abundance, most of which were covered in a layer of snow so were a bit tricky.
-
Re: Lakes Summit Snow Report
Small amount of fresh snow overnight on Wansfell - above about 1,000ft I would guess. Much less windy than yesterday, raining on and off but not heavily.
-
Re: Lakes Summit Snow Report
Good bit of freezing overnight, the tops look great, so on with the Microspikes then!
