Well at least she'll get a fair few points on table wont she then? ;)

Unfortunately, there is bound to be a protest on the grounds of being over age, so any points awarded will be forfeited. Plus there is the question of whether the FRA will ban her from future events for a flagrant breach of the rules. A sad end to a brilliant career on the fells.
Ah well, I won't be competing in any of the FRA races this year so I guess I shouldn't really have any opinion. Just some constructive critiscism which ends up on everyone ganging up against it and taken the opposite side. Roll on BOFRA for some proper racing.
Your opinion is valid and noted I'm sure. You've highlighted a potential anomaly, which needs to be monitored.
It is important that by whatever subjective measure is deemed appropriate in a particular year, the 'right' team is generally agreed to have won.
Tell your Gran she's famous. :)
And no disrespect to BOFRA but it's like comparing the English Premier League with the Scottish Premier League.
Why does it always have to be about competition?
BOFRA is a much friendlier, less serious and welcoming atmosphere, where almost everyone knows everyone. It isn't full of people wearing 'coach' jackets from track/cross country clubs. The courses are also far superior and the races take you to some of the finest places in the country.
Sorry, but I thought that was the point we were discussing, the assertion that the depth of competition in the older girls races specifically was poor. Look through the BOFRA results and I think you'll find that the depth and quality in the U17W category is lower than that at the fra U16/U18 races.
I wouldn't argue with your point that BOFRA is friendly, but I would also argue that the FRA Champs is also friendly. I think fell running generally is friendly and the qualities of BOFRA that you describe are to be found throughout fell running all over the country.
Perhaps that's why some of us that wear coach jackets from track/cross country clubs are encouraging our athetes to get involved? In fact I wouldn't describe us as a Track/Cross Country Club, we are a multi-discipline club with a long history on fells.
As far as the BOFRA courses being far superior, I think that's down to opinion. There may be some great venues, of that I have no doubt, but great venues are not the exclusive domain of BOFRA.
AW is about as good as it gets.
My decision at BBH to encourage my athletes to take part in the FRA Champs is purely down to the number of races. 6 races through a summer is an appropriate number. It can be managed by my athletes whlst they can also manage their other disciplines which they also enjoy, which of course at this time of year is track and field.
If we were to try and compete in the BOFRA Champs, then we would have to take almost a fell only approach to the Spring / Summer and I think that the variety we have works well for us.
I hope that you're not resentful of us from T&F coming along, I would hate to think that if we were to come to a BOFRA race we would be frowned upon. I'm sure that is not the case.

I do not think that anyn one course can be any better than another in fellrunning as different clubs, counties, countries even have a different perception of fell running- steep cumbrian ascents, runnable peak district terrain etc. Anni Waltz isnt my cuppa- far too much road and I much prefer Coiners but it doesnt automatically make it better because there is a concensus that some people prefer some courses to others it merely makes it suited to certain types,
My big issue is clubs like Blackburn (sorry WP), Leigh and others getting their athletes to run in champs race only I believe it encourages athletes only to enter to win and gives a false illusion of the strength of junior fellrunning- I mean lets think back to the Ambleside races, there were complaints the course was too hard for some athletes at under 16 and 18 level yet these runners are the fell talent of the future and it paints a grim picture as in a coupke of years if they do live upto their potential on the fell they may have to tackle races like Coniston or Buttermere as part of a championship.
I dont fell angry or upset by track runners doing fell- quite the opposite they have incredible talent and im very envious but I just wish they showed the dedication to match their potential instead of just turning upto 6 races a year to win- We need to try and get more athletes doing races that arent championships or else the future talent will be lost
Like I said Tom - it's time. If you commit to BOFRA, you do so almost at the exclusion of other types of race - for those that have decided fell is their priority that is fine. The FRA Junior Champs, with 6 races gives us a chance to commit to the series, but of course it does not mean we stick to it exclusively.
I think you can see from my approach, that we do other races - Paddy's Pole, Aggie's Staircase, David Staff, Rivington Pike to name a few senior races that Beckie has raced where she's allowed to under the age restrictions - an issue close to your heart.
She would prefer to race "extra" fell in with the Seniors. I also think it makes more sense instead of racing the same people all of the time, week in week out. It is strangely more relaxing - less pressure - taking on seniors as a junior.
Our younger athletes don't have this option, but they do go to other junior races, but individually when it suits, and some like a change, such as the Chorley Park Friday night races.
You can read much of the related comment regarding junior development on this forum and in Fellrunner.
Look at our best International runners - the trials at Keswick were a good example last year. They usually have a varied background. Each athlete and their coach / family have to decide what racing agenda is best for them. I believe it's variety which is why I try to direct my athletes to the FRA Junior Champs and the T&F in the Spring / Summer.
I think all my athletes that ran at Coiners and AW (except those that are too young) will be at the County T&F Champs in Blackpool this weekend.
I belive that will make them better athletes in the longer term, and they will have the option to specialise if they want, later in life.
Must agree with WP, I looked at the calender with my son & we have family hols & other committments, the odd triathlon/swimming gala, school T&F events etc. So 8 BOFRAs wont happen, we can get 5 FRA champs in + a 2 or 3 BOFRAs for fun (not being involved in champ reduces pressure) & Helm Hill have 5 BOFRAs for their junior champs this summer but we cant make all of those either.
We don't have a junior club championship of any sort if that's what you mean.
The club has "managed" events and I tend to be team manager for most of them. The juniors take part in XC League and Champs, T&F Leagues & Champs and team relays such as the Mansfield XC Relays, NW Road Relays.
The junior fell side of of our club started really with the Searson family - Sally is an U14 now and one of our veterans :) , as the eldest 2 daughters used to run and Beckie and us got asked along to Rivington around 5/6 years ago.
Then we got involved in endurance coaching and have encouraged some juniors to have a go at fell. The FRA Jnr series is perfect as it tends to allow us to also follow a T&F agenda.
Incidentally the Searson's second daughter didn't find endurance running to her liking after about 12 years of age although she had been very good and ran at the Inter Counties XC, but we of course have other options. She's the County's best Hammer thrower now, also very good at Discus and went to the English Schools Champs last year for Hammer.
Variety makes a difference, and sometimes in ways that you could not foresee ;)
I'll second that, there just alot more enjoyable places to be. I see FRA's as having a chance of getting selected for England, they are a more serious event, which is good as its needed at high levels, but i feel it takes some of the enjoyment out of the running them. Like AW, i did this race before it was a championship, and really enjoyed it. But since took over by the Fra its not the same. Anyway its my last year as a junior so non of this will affect me then, senior at last :D

I have to express disappointment that so few turned up to receive their awards today at the FRA Junior Do - only the 3 x U12 Girls had all three there.
A huge effort was put in to make the day a success - and it was a great day.
The only qualification was the lack of award winners at the presentation.
I appreciate that we have a National event and that is evident from the clubs such as Westbury, Lincoln Wellington, Tamworth... that were involved and perhaps athletes from such areas have to be cut a little slack.
However, several recipients from even within the same County as the do, or athletes that live within reasonable driving distance failed to turn up and I feel that is quite selfish.
In addition to not being there to take your award, you have deprived others of their big day at the end of their seasons efforts.
I think distnace was a definite factor and it depends what you define as reasonable driving distance as a 6 hour return journey or the chance to win and lead your team to victory in the Yorks Road relay may well be preferrable which is actuially anything but selfish, choosing to not let your team down over personal glory. How dowes that deprive others of their big day.
That said hats off to everyone involved in organising the day I do know that atheltes who i have contact with who didnt go wrestkled long and hard about whether to make the trip and also work for parents was also a factor. It wasnt out of lethargy thats for sure.

"having the gap between the last race and the do will mean that you can get all the right trophies. personally I was a bit disappointed with the turn out on Sun its always a shame that winners arent there."
I wonder who this quote was taken from when commenting on the idea of the Junior Do and Relays idea following the Viking Chase and Do in 2009?

Was it me?????. I havent changed my mind it is disappointing when winners can tbe there, just saying that I do understand why they cant be there. In a perfect world everyone woul;d have been able to attend. As it happens i was never intending to attend as my lad wasnt able to race ony events due to a season of injuries so I am not feeling in the slightest but hypocritical.
Really impressed you were able to remember what I wrote a year ago it clearly made an impression!!

Couldnt find the emoticons to put the cheeky grin or scarcastic face on. Never for one moment would I even begin to think that anything i wrote had any impact on anyone. Cheers
