Carneddau race

Thanks for all the kind messages, both on the forum and privately (verbal and e mail). Typical comments were 'excellent race' 'well organised' 'marvellous value' 'good atmosphere'. Photos were taken of most of the runners on Carnedd Llewellyn. These are now available to view on the WFRA website (www.wfra.org.uk).
Comments on a couple of points raised on this thread -
Stiles - With hindsight perhaps more could have been done to ease the bottlenecks. However, the stiles were early on in a long race and being held up for a few seconds would not affect the eventual outcome. Also, although it was pre entry, we did get 78 EOD which exacerbated the problem. It is disappointing that some runners felt it necessary to climb the wall, dislodging a couple of stones in the process. The wall has now been repaired.
Whistles - It is not WFRA policy to use whistles except in an emergency, and there was no instruction from the Race Organiser for marshals to use whistles.
The marshal in the saddle between Carnedd Llewellyn and Yr Elen did blow his whistle when he was aware that a group of runners had gone astray and were heading towards a dangerous area. Again, with hindsight, perhaps we should have issued the marshal with a bell.

Thanks for those. Great race, lovely weather, very friendly bunch. Just what I joined up for:) .

Results, report and pics now on the www.wfra.me.uk site. I'm really sun burnt from that race, so hot on the climb up. Nice buffet put on, hopefully that will continue as it was a lovely day out.

Do a lot of training in these hills as they're just an hour away but never done this race. Hoping for sunshine after Foel Fras...:D

PS - have stumbled upon the answer to the route question here, any tips still appreciated...

Starts at Gerlan out past the water works towards Crib Lem/Black ladders then head off through the bog and up the ridge which runs direckt to Carnedd daffydd, aroung the ridge to Llewelyn, off to Yr Elen, down the ridge then off across the bog to the sheep fold, steep climb to Gyrn Wigau and the race finishes on the edge of the village. Lovely race, stunning record..

We have a rough map up for the marshals but it shows the mains peaks involved.

Keep seeing different distances quoted for this race over the years - has there been a course change of late or has there been a drastic remeasure?

However, will turn up however far it is. Going to be a fine day, although I thought that before Foel Fras...

I understand the race route changed to remove some tarmac .

Yes, covered in Factor 30 on top of Yr Elen with Katie and David the marshals. Pete was on Llewelyn, and he should be uploading some pictures today.

Going to the Aber race today and if the weather is ok, top of Cader Idris on Saturday...

Hasn't CL always been in it? Certainly has for the last few years, since the British Champs year at least.

Brilliant route. Never did the old route with the road section, but think its great to finish straight off the hill.

Off to the US tomorrow so a no show. Doesn't get the numbers such a cracking race deserves.

Yes, Carnedd Llywelyn has previously been included. I did this race for the first time last year and CL was part of the route. Great race and great spread afterwards in the pub!

you`re right YDT
the original route did`nt visit the summit of Llewelyn and just skirted along the scree to the bwlch between yr Elen and CL.
i never could see the point of not including it so i`m glad that it has been added in recent years.

A fantastic race over real mountain terrain. Thanks to the organiser and all the team.

the toughest race iv`e done since coming back to racing.the weather was fine for running ,a bit windy on the tops but was`nt too cold.descended like a fairy from the top of yr Elen so lost a bit of time.i wore the Speed cross 2 and felt very unstable these shoes are ok on tracks and non technical grassy routes but on real mountain stuff they just dont cut the mustard.gonna get myself a pair of those new Inov8 if i`m gonna be racing a lot of these kind of races.

Does anyone know how Alwyn oliver is now after his fall?

how serious was the fall?were did it happen?
i work with Alwyns daughter but im not back at work till thursday.i hope he`s ok

Alwayn was injured descending Yr Elen and was helped to the checkpoint at the sheepfold from where he was rescued. I don't know details. I think he had a thigh injury from a sharp stone or something.

Thinking about doing this but was wondering what the route is I have had a little look back on threads about it but haven't yet found one with the full route yet, being new to this business of forums(though have studied and enjoyed the forums for several years). Any help advice appreciated. thanks

Agreed, a great low key but tough race. :-)

A great race but it owes me one! I went over on my ankle just after Carnedd Dafydd last year not a bad fall but enough to make me stop after a couple of 100 yards and then make my way back to Bethesda limping by which time I arrived I couldn't weight bear at all and was off running completely for 3 months - not a good summer. Going back to give it a good kicking! Nice warm up for the Welsh 1000s too. Some interesting route choices going up Dafydd keeping to the left on the ascent.

Thanks for the great info-after this race planning to do the half Welsh 1000m (plus, if I have any legs left, to do a bit extra off the end) all as a gradual build up with Borrowdale in mind.
