Re: Unwritten Fell Running Rul
Don't assume anything about people - a lot of folk talk themselves down, and then you find out they've had plenty of running achievements
-
Re: Unwritten Fell Running Rul
Follow the flags if you're told to, queue at stiles if you're told to, go where directed by a marshal. Otherwise jump walls , fences and gates and take short cuts and lead mugs through a brash filled thicket if you want to shake them off.

Believe me I know what cold is in the hills having high peak marathoned twice now and, relative to that, it wasn't even slightly cold at last year's Xmas on the fells. The lake district and the yorkshire dales have nothing on the peak district as far as grim weather in the winter is concerned.

Re: Unwritten Fell Running Rul
Never think "I'll catch that runner later". I you can't now, you won't be able to later.
-
Re: Unwritten Fell Running Rul
Never wear all pink (inc skirt) on a run as photos end up on facebook and destroy youre already low reputation.
Never kick someone in the head when trying to take a short cut by leaping over a boggy gully at Shelf Moor (sorry whoever it was)

Re: Unwritten Fell Running Rul
If you need to fart, fart.

Re: Unwritten Fell Running Rul
Never fall down and appear to have critically damaged your ankle while doing the bronte way fell race such that two or three runners stop to help you and, even though you've fallen over just 100 yards from road access, the yorkshire air ambulance is called to air lift you out in case you've severely broken your leg... which in fact you have'nt but instead have an ankle sprain or slight bruising or something :D

Or indeed a bracing little recce of the same... Took me until sometime in June for me to get all the feeling back in a couple of my toes!!!
For as little as I actually race, I always have half a dozen safety pins stashed somewhere in my car. Also, I'm sure I've shaved minutes off my times by folding my race number to make it more aerodynamic.:D

Never fold your race number if there's a sponsors name on it. Some people were getting told off for that over the loudspeaker at Grasmere!

I always fold mine and attatch it to my tracksters. I can't do with the way they flap around in the wind when they're on my vest, plus i'm a cold person so i'm likely to be shedding or adding layers as i go along. I'm saddened by the argument that companies are resentful of number folders because of the loss of exposure for their company logos, it just doesn't sound like cricket to me, the less accountants there are in fell running the better. I would gladly pay extra for the cost of the number, perhaps this argument could be brought to a close by someone who knows PB asking him what he thinks?

I'd agree with that, never been as cold as last year's Tanky's trog on Bleaklow. XOTF 2009 and The Fellsman 2009 don't even come close. It's a damp cold that chills you t'bone in the Peak District. Or maybe i'm justing getting old and soft:rolleyes:

Sounds awful, glad i don't have the distance in me to make an attempt on Tanky's! Half the challenge must be the time of year.

Ere softie, do you remember that thread that got to about 300 replies on folded numbers. I laughed by bits off at how serious it all got.
Anyway unwritten rules - According to the master you should never wear shorts over leggings. Personally I think its a good look.

Yup, Dec 11th. Anticlockwise this time. Hoping for 5-6 degrees, clag, no wind and no blizzards this time.

Last time I saw him, 2 weeks ago, he was (no, actually it was who I assumed is his wife) bollocking someone for folding a PB race number. It was at Sedbergh Hills, lol.
PS they don't flap in the wind if you crumple them up first

Had a good laugh at that - i ran in skinz only recently and felt very self conscious and add the shorts over the top now for the sake of everyone else. :-0

Against my better judgement I'll allow myself to enter in to this particular debate again (groan) - sorry but I think there was a big misunderstanding about 'folding numbers' . For me the whole discussion was really about what rules we have/need in fell running, whether or not we give the race organisers the courtesy of doing what they ask, and whether or not some people think they apply to everyone else but themselves. Folding numbers was just the topic it happened to surface under - it could equally have been (and has) whether or not we carry required kit, follow flagged sections, actually know how to navigate, bolt Broad Stand or jump queues at stiles. These topics often attract a lot more heat than light because I think we are generally a laid back lot who take umbrage when someone tells us to do something we dont necessarily personally agree with - but if that someone is a race organiser then I'll do what they ask in return for them being prepared to organise the race in the first place. This whole series of issues arises in my opinion because once 'rules' exist, unless very clear from the outset (remember the debates over what is 'waterproof'?) they are open to personal interpretation - and we all have different views on this and I'm sure we all think we are right, and we can probably all think of examples where we have seen people apparantly blatantly ignoring them - but they themselves might think they are not. Then we all get heated about it and have a long debate on here!

More good sense from Cougar.
The essence of the "cut down numbers" issue as far as Pete Bland and Jonathan Broxap (and me) are concerned is actually that the numbers are on your chest so they can be CLEARLY seen by marshalls and particularly those at the finish who may have runners arriving in close formation. Cutting them down, wrapping them round your groin, etc makes this task difficult and defeats the whole purpose of having numbers.

Re: Unwritten Fell Running Rul
Cougar you make some good points here. Let me tell you the problem with most of the threads that escalate into everyones random opinions and stances on this forum, and any other for that matter. We simply lose sight of the underlying wisdom or virtues of the original topic. Let me explain. Practical wisdom results from moral will and moral skill. The problem with rules and the expansion of these rules is that is an attack on peoples ability to exercise moral skill and hence we get a vibrant debate. However alot of posters lack the foresight to look deep anough into the underlying virtues. If that folding numbers thread had been retitled 'who thinks it is a good idea to make it difficult for race organisers and marshalls to do their job?' you would see a different debate, as you rightly point out, fell runners tend to be a respectful bunch.
-
Re: Unwritten Fell Running Rul
All very true, Roy. It's also a product of the weakness of the medium. If all the forumites on a thread were physically present in a room and privy to the body language and intonation of a discussion in real time, you'd be much more likely to come to a generally accepted conclusion, because there would be a visible demonstration of justifiable leadership by the end of it. The internet is a manifestation of the atomisation of modern society, everybody has an equal input, so you often just end up with mush.

When you get given a top secret list of the possible championship races for next season, don't post it on the forums yourself. Instead get some youngster to post it, then they'll get told off. ;)

Cougar i'm not being awkward here but i'm struggling to clearly see your angle. Are you in disagreement the way that issues involving the ruling of an RO are openly debated by runners? As in: it's not the decision of the runners so why are we banging on about it? Sorry if you think i'm being pedantic i'm just trying to understand you more clearly.
