Sent my entry off today! Hope to plan my races in the ultra series better this year and not leave it all for the last two!
I took the plunge and posted my entry off yesterday. I have to admit that part of my motivation was a determination not to miss out on the first running of a new event *again*. I've run the second Loch Ness Marathon, the second Devil O' the Highlands and the second Highland Fling. This time I want to be able to say that I've run the first! :D
This could make it very interesting. Should I be thinking about some of these?

Wanted to get my entry sorted for this today but delayed by lack of a chequebook :( Not sure what bank is upto. Don't suppose it will fill up, only about a dozen entries when I last looked.
Likewise RF, will be fun, though I hope I'm not last .... scratch that selfishness, who cares, any 55 miles is a victory.
Entered.... new challenge for me, lots of 4-6 hour training runs I guess.
Check this out http://thepathlesstravelled.typepad....hardmoors.html
I hope the weather stays for the race, would be interesting. I would recommend buying some kahtoolas!!!!
Too right, you can always hit him with them if he doesnt let you :D
Im tempted to take poles if its simillar conditions to now (only ever used them in the TMB) cant see anything in the rules disallowing them:confused:;)
Did a bit of a route recce, still snow up on the Cleveland way. Anyone else been out on the route recently?
Not been quite that far up, but snow caused the "official" Wheeldale tandem to be cancelled yesterday (plenty still ran it). Wasn't that much of it really - transport and road issues caused cancellation - and nice to run in, unless we get a massive dump of the stuff I'm not too worried. So I reckon must have been some on this route too, at least near Helmsley.
3 weeks!!!!
Yipee
Have just managed to persuade the family to join me.
So now I can drive to Helmsley, sleep in comfort of our van, get up at a civilised hour and be collected later at the end! Idon't even mind having paid 10 quid for the coach that I won't need.
Only down side is that I need to have legs working well enough to do a nearby orienteering event on the Sunday
Gulp, I'm just hoping that my legs work well enough to get up and make a brew the next morning, that's if I do this. Not remotely got enough miles in legs! I know that's always the case, but I really haven't and don't want to be trashed before we even get to spring (if we get to spring!). However, since when has common sense ever been a factor.
I am hoping my legs are working well enough after having done the Wuthering Hike (Howarth Hobble)the weekend Before.
Should be fun though:D
Not long now, day off work, meant to be tidying up my sh**hole of a house, but spent a good bit of time thinking about what to put in drop-bags, etc....
No drop bag`s for me so nothing to think about on that score, i will just carry what i need;);)
It's also my first time running 55 miles and the excitement about it that's carried me through training in the Winter months has gradually been displaced by apprehension and mild terror!
I ran the last 21ish miles of the course last Saturday though which was good for the confidence, from between Wainstones and Blowarth crossing to Guisborough. Only went wrong once(!) and covered it comfortably in 4 hours. There was still quite a bit of snow on the top though at Blowarth crossing which made for some tricky running, a lot of it very compacted and slippy so i'm not entirely ruling out taking some skates.
Anyway, good luck all,
See you there!
snow is alright, best case: melts between now and then and makes it soft underfoot, worst case: snow underfoot. As long as snow doesnt cause cancellation I'm happy :D
Hi Guys
Just heard there is a slight change to the end.. for the better imho;)
Instead of coming out at Slapewath after Guisborough woods crossing the very busy Whitby Road twice and following Cleveland Street before becoming lost in Guisborough town centre, the route will come off just after Old Park Farm then follow the old railway line for a mile or so before taking a path to the right which takes you bang into the cricket club without having to cross any major roads, it is a mile shorter but a lot safer and will lead to the chance of a sprint finish lol:eek:
For me this is a lot better..
he says that this will be well signed and a checkpoint will be strategically positioned to stop any short cuts...
I beleive as well as safety this will be alot easier navigational wise
What do you guys think??
54 or 55m, not too worried, don't know the Guisborough area but this sounds an improvement.
I was near the western escarpment up onto the moors just south of Osmotherley at a tiny village called Nether Silton yesterday. Lovely area and definately traces of snow visible around the top near the route of White Horse to Osmoth section (Hambletons?). Would be nice to have one last glimpse of or even a run in the snow :p
yep, me and swimmingDunce from Lincoln are gonna be repeat offenders too. well in my case assuming a rotten knee injury holds up.:(
As a Scarborian, its gonna be great to get back onto the NYMoors
how did you do at HH John - i was chuffed to crack 5hrs on my first attempt, and only 1 week after doing 60 miles on the GranthamCanal Ultra 2-dayer.(2nd )
And I'm wondering if nine hours total of road cycling on Sun and Mon is the best preparation for this  :D
me too
hope i feel better than I did around the Hobble this year!
Hoping that the length and so slower pace will help (enjoyed Long Mynd last year so know it is doable) just hope the nagigation goes Ok as it is not really an area I know very well at all
Hope to have a chance to meet people and chat more too
has anyone who's done the 110 before or local knowledge got any hints on tricky navigational sections?
oh, and it's looking like this settled dry weather is gonna end on Saturday :(
Guisborough woods in the dark sounds tricky (at least for us slow coaches!!).
Tricky bits - finding the route into Osmotherley (keep your eye on the map)
Guisborough Woods (but I beleive will be signed really well) the new end makes it all a lot easier. It follows the Cleveland Way so is quite well signed!!
See ya Sat
I've only scanned through route so far, but I believe route into Osmoth is same (or similar) as end of Osmotherley Phoenix? Signposted quite well if I recall. I'm not so worried about the navigation so much as this descent being the start of a difficult 15m of the biggest undulations. At least the underfoot should be good for this section.
Good luck all who are doing this. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you that the rain doesn't arrive with too much of a vengeance.
Had a read of route and look at map. Down to Osmoth isn't too bad, I've managed vit no probs at end of Phoenix twice and there may be the odd Cleveland Way sign too :o I agree the Guisborough woods bit could be tricky, lots of little twists and turns in route descrip that you can't see on a map.
Cheers Nick, hope to see you out there again soon.
I practised the last 20 miles of the route of a few weeks ago and didn't find the route through Guisborough Woods tricky at all (that's assuming i went the right way!). The paths all made sense and were straightforward. I guess it might be different when it's getting dark and exhaustion's a factor though. I'm just a bit irked that having worked out the route from Slapewath to the cricket club, the course has now changed!
Good luck rapattaque; see you at the 3Peaks.
Cheers - Raymond
well, good luck to everyone.
i hope were not doomed to a complete drenching :( ......
Great event and well organised. Thanks to all the organising team and especially to the marshalls who were camped out in those damp chilly conditions.
Well done to everyone who finished, and commiserations to those who didn't - it was a tough course made tougher by the weather.
This morning my legs ache all over; one knee is sore but my feet are fine - not even any pressure sores.
Thanks Karen, for the company from Osmotherly - kept me going well whilst by body was rebelling. I'm glad there wasn't an indoor checkpoint around LordsStone Cafe as I may well have bailed out I was feeling so rough. From Wainstones I felt better and by Kildale my head was back in order and I was catching up with some of the people who had overtaken me over Carlton Bank.
Seconded. I was one of the ones who ended up calling it a day at Kildale due to hypothermia (and a lack of race fitness). It was the first time that I'd ever felt fearful for my life during a race and one of the few times that I've been grateful for the pesky namby pamby kit requirements insisted upon by a race organiser.
I'm typing this with numb fingertips that still haven't recovered from the prolonged chilling they got, even with gloves on. The exposed route, low cloud, rain & wind all combined to produce the most unpleasant conditions I've ever raced in (and I speak as a finisher of the 2005 WHW race that was stopped early).
Huge respect to all those who finished yesterday and even huger respect for those who raced yesterday and *still* plan to have a go at the Hardmoors 110.
For once, it turned out that a race name wasn't mere hyperbole. It really was the HARDmoors.
Yesterday I said to myself "never ever ever again". Today I beginning to think, "It couldn't possibly be as bad next year". :D
I thoroughly enjoyed that.
I'm looking forward to the 110 already
Just lost my longer post
So to summarise, agree with other posters, great job the organisers, village hall marshalls and those at remote CP  And a nice top I can wear and feel smug for awhile :D
Osmoth to Kildale was damn tough. I was most fearing the climb to Urra Moor and gradually up to the very top of moors. As it turned out Carlton bank was worst bit with the wind and rain blowing up and over the edge chilling and eventually soaking me in my lightweight water-proof (lesson learned). And it climbed from a lower height and seeminglt went on forever!
Nice to get some sun at Kildale till Roseberry Topping and nightfall. 110 under consideration, would really have to up my training and start vee-rrry slow.
Hope you start to feel better soon RF.
