Winter hill was the other race i was thinking of but long Mynd it will be!
No chance of getting over for a reccee before so am going to have to hope its an easy enough route to follow on the day unfortunatley.
Are there many route variations or is it quite simple? Quite new to fell running and dont have the best sense of direction!
It's tough! I would echo what Mr1470 has said about saving something for the three climbs at the end. It's often said that the race begins at checkpoint 5. There are one or two historical threads on Long Mynd from a couple of years ago which have some good tips on them. Assuming you have the positions of the checkpoints, most of the course is reasonably straightforward. There is some debate about when to drop off the ridge before checkpoint 1 (Jonathon's Hollow 447964). When you get up onto the plateau after this it's a bit featureless but there's usually a procession of runners. Going down to checkpoint 4 (Minton Batch 409918) needs care to avoid coming out too far down and missing it. The last climb, up Yearlet (checkpoint 7 437935), gives rise to much debate. Diagonally from the bottom? Up the valley then turn right? Some people have even suggested going straight up the front, which is pretty steep but the shortest distance climb (?) Finally there are about three ways down off Yearlet. The whole thing might be very interesting this year if there's snow...
Easily the most enjoyable route i have EVER run.
It's a fairly complicated route but basically strings together a series of good paths, with just an occasional short pathless interlude. I heard about all the route choices before I did it but in the end everyone where I was in the field (about 2:30) seemed to go the same way so there was no confusion.
As has been said, the tough bit is near the end (just when you are starting to fade a bit!). It's a great race though. :)
Yes: I forgot to say that it is a terrific race.
Looking to go down for this too, its on the Holmfirth Harriers champ.s this year. Dont know anything about it but what I have read here. However as a mid to back of pack runner i am hoping with a map it shouldnt be to hard to find my way around.
As I'll be in Worcester all weekend I might have a look at the double with Titterstone Clee, is this just a mad dash up and down?

Yes it is a mad dash up and down. Myself and Fell Top Teddy intend to be there.
Eggman, just type long mynd into the search function and you can pull up at least 3 previous threads about this race.
It may only be in Shropshire but it is one of the toughest races around. It combines speed with extreme climbs and descents. A knackering combination.
IMHO, Titterstone Clee don't really count as a fell race.

Its more an egg timer shape than a figure of eight as you don't cross in the middle bit. Its pretty much the route I took including the last climb which was a tough one as I remember:eek:.
I will be at Winter Hill this year. Enjoy the run, as others have said its a great race.

The point is, ask a layperson to name a mountainous county and few will mention Salop. More to the point, ask yer average fellrunner to name a mountainous county and even fewer may think of Salop. Happy are those who know better!:D

Reading the mercia web site it suggests there may be several different ways of getting round . Just some time limits at some of the points . I did a recce over two weekends to try and work out the best route but i'll probably be too knackered to think on the day and do what I usually do which is follow the person in front . Not difficult as I am usually at the back .
This method served me well for most of last year apart from scafell pike when I followed someone completely the wrong way . Dooo
I only hope the snow doesn't block the roads up . Valleys will probably be ok but titterstone may be difficult to get to .
Titterstone was v. difficult (impossible?) to get to on Monday (yesterday) when I had intended to do a reccie.
Mercia are posting updates on their website as depending on tonights weather there maybe some doubt over Titterstone Clee on Saturday. The problem is with access on the lanes around the start. http://www.merciafellrunners.org.uk/

I was lucky enough to fly over Titterstone and the valleys today and all the roads were clear , but , the weather forcast isn't looking too good for tommorow . If the roads get blocked Titters I'm sure will be off . Roads to church strettton are all main roads though so it would have to be really bad for that one not to go ahead .
Really looking forward to it as well . Been off the booze for at least five days and everything .
If you can fly I don't suppose the snow will be a problem for you !:p

Sorry folks, just noticed the read more tag on Mercia's weather warning update. Looks like Titterstone is on although freezing temperatures overnight might make parking an issue with icy roads around the start.

Ground under foot today at titterstone was good so unless there's significant
snow over night the valleys should be fine .
Just got back from the valleys race . weather closed in towards the end which made navigation rather difficult . There was a group of people towards the end trying to decide which was best route to finish . Some of us went one way some another . The other route was better :o .
Great day , well organised . I can't wait till next year .

tobogganing down the preciptous slopes was a real highlight for me

I did this race today for the first time, and it was only my second fell run.
I managed to twist my ankle when my foot hit a rock sliding down the descent before Callow, which made the last part of the race a bit of a grit-your-teeth affair. That was just at the point when the poor weather came in as well. Still, I managed to make it round and finish before the cut off, which was good enough for me.
Off the top of yearlet took a bit of a wrong turn and made things even more difficult for myself, but I suppose it all adds to the fun.
The drive home was a bit painful though. Good job the car was automatic...
i think i was the other one of the group of four at the end well done karma and the bloke that stayed behind with the runner we came across. glad to hear they got him off the road again. thanks also to i think it must of been stef for pushing me to get my legs working again after we set of in search of a marshall that was hard
What an outstanding race, made even more enjoyable by the slalom decents in the snow. The winner well deserves their medal, as I maximised the tread in the foot wells created by the runner in front tactic. Has to go down as my favourite fell race now. Thanks to all the marshalls and race organisers who did an outstanding job. I am going under 2 next year:)
