Oh dear, I had not realised that wearing armani was de rigeur. I've just got a scabby t-shirt.
I may be at a genetic disadvantage that is worse than that which plagues southerners. Yes, I confess: I'm originally from the Fens.
You are spot-on with the scabby t-shirt Yomper - de rigeur for all discerning fell runners!
I only took up fell running when my girlfriend made me. I was into fell walking and ended up going "run-walking". In effect we don't try and run all day but only on the flat and down hill bits. We cover a hell of alot more ground this way but don't feel like we're racing. We managed the south glen shiel ridge in about 7 hours doing this and it certainly helps overall fitness. I have now done a couple of races (against my will) and also the highlander mountain marathon, which because we treated it like a couple of days out in the mountains instead of a race felt like really good fun.
The main thing is enjoying it and (although it's always knackering, you just move faster) the fitness will come over time.
de rigueur
Well after 3 weeks of really good resolutions I got myself up to a 2-miler (I know, I know, but I was starting from scratch and taking it steady) and BOM, tendonitis... after 5 days of agony, couldn't put any weight on it, succumbed to GP who agreed it could be the fact I have *awesome* muscles from cycling, so went further than my crappy tendons could handle. And for the last week I've been living in my new place in Rossendale, just gazing out at fantastic hills :-(
Still, doctor did say it wasn't to put me off running...
I'm going to start from scratch again, but with loads more warming up, cooling down, stretching and stuff.
So... I'm STILL new to everything!
Which tendons were troubleing you Yomper
The one that runs down the inside of my leg, over my inner ankle bone. When standing on the floor, heels down, the one that raises your toes/foot. Also corresponding swelling on the outside ankle, but not much pain there.
The doctor prodded my ankle and I launched myself off the chair sideways... it's pretty tender.
I've been icing and elevating and ibuprofening and *trying* to rest. And today I can walk up and down stairs without hanging on to the bannister and swearing, which is an improvement!
when you get going again pop into Rossendale if that is your closest club they will give you sound advice and the do if i can remember still have begginer sessions mondays is it?
Nope not achilles, that's at the back. Umm, anterior tibilalis tendonitis? Anyway, still sore, did walk into town (2 miles) yesterday and today without whimpering so it's improving.
I think I'm a looooong way off going to the club, it's at the Marl Pits, because even as a beginner I'll not keep up with people. How far/fast do people run on club nights? I'm going to be the embarrassing red faced staggerer hailing a bus.
Hi,
my 1st ever post - so be nice please :D
Yomper, as a reletively newbie to the world of fell, I've been suffering some tendon troubles with my feet / lower leg too. From what you're describing it sounds like all the lateral movement has inflamed your flexor digi longus which work opposite to the peronaeus muscles to lift / scrunch the toes. I've had trouble with one foot & the toes going numb, pain up the outside of my lower leg, pain ontop of the foot. Went to see a good sports fizz, who told me I've got a hyper-mobile right ankle, hence the extended movements & soreness aorund my lower leg / foot.
It probably wasn't helped by doing a fell race nearly every 2 weeks since October, but hey ho! Now that the last one of the winter series is over (Gisborough Moors - cracking!), I can rest up a bit
Cheers, make of this what you will..............
Cheers Penguin! :)
