Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Hmmmphhhh!! Well done Longdogs-the only record I have ever held has been smashed! But given it is by you, of true Goddess status in fell running circles, I absolutely don't mind!!!! It is a great route isn't it and I have Tony (Mountain Man) to blame for getting me into this whole fell running lark a few years ago! I doubt I'll ever match your time so a sincere well done! Rachel x
-
Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Hardly smashed it was only a couple minutes! We should get more women doing it and push each other on.. gentleman pacers not welcome :)
-
Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Well done Longdogs and fair play to Rachel on her post. Your both stars.
-
Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Ha ha-thanks Stagger! Really kind of you to say that! and Longdogs, yes I agree, more women needed to have a go at this (although i'll never say no to a gentlemen pacer!!!!)
Massive well done again to you, I imagine with a more informed attempt you could do loads better than your first time? rachel x

Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Trying to persuade a couple of club-mates (of the very few in the club who fell-race) to have a go at this, when we have the same day available to us all.

Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Went for a proper attempt today. Perfect conditions, cool but sunny, no wind, very dry underfoot. I clocked in at 2.33.44
Splits: OT mill 30.19, G.Mill 50.10, Ruin 1.27.47, S.Pike 2.00.32, Track junc 2.16.37, Cottages 2.26.44
I made up alot of time after S Pike this time, i think my wanderings over the Moor last time cost a bit, i only had to refer to instructions for the first half this time. Pretty sure of the route now, i am willing to offer guided tours for a fee of coffee plus a slice of flapjack :) Highly recommended day out.

Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Another impressive run - the overall record looks as though it could be within your grasp now! Great stuff.

No chance on that.. but it'd be tempting to have a go at sub 2.30 if i pre-placed drinks. This fell running is an obsessive business !

Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Been round this morning with my friend Mick Bull from Middleton Harriers. He finished in 3.15.00 exactly after a sprint finish! Very tidy time for a 63 year old..! He was fading a bit at end but my nagging got him through, either that or he speeded up to not have to listen to me any longer :)
Splits Old Town 00:35, G Mill 00:59, Ruin 1:48, SPike 2:30, Junction 2:51, Cottages 3:06

Yes please long dogs, I'm local but crap with maps and have been wanting to do it for a while now. Could even throw in some quality street to go with a coffee
Cheers Mart.

Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
I was thinking of doing a lap of CVR tomorrow (Friday 5th) and was wondering what snow conditions were like over that way.
Any info would be great.

It's a bit weird. Little or no snow on the open ground, but problems are where snow has drifted deeply up against walls, as this is taking some time to shift. Unfortunately lots of the paths / tracks run alongside or are trapped between walls, so you can end up fighting your way over some deep piles in places!
Was last on the tops Tuesday evening (Stoodley Pike side) - it didn't cause us massive problems, but it will make it tougher and slow you down!
edit: Yeah just been for a run after work around Southowram a few miles down the valley, there are the odd stretches of sheltered track/lane between walls where you'll hit snow maybe 2 or 3 feet deep - it's melting, so it's soft and you sink in! Won't spoil a day out but if you're after a fast time it won't help :)

Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Did one lap of CVR clockwise yesterday morning.
Underfoot conditions were actually quite dry and good, apart from the odd bit where snow had drifted between walls covering the path in many feet of snow. This is only the second time I have been clockwise and I managed to go wrong in the woods above Gibson Mill, turning right too early and having to leave the path and cut through the woods to rejoin the correct path losing 5 mins or so.
Splits:
Park cottages 8:52 Path junction 20:32, Stoodley Pike 46:35, Straups Mills 1:18:30, Gibson Mill 2:00:32, Old Mill 2:25:33, Finish 2:51:48

Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Well done Spookster, sounds like the snow didn't harm your time much!
Isn't clockwise cheating?
-
Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Yes well done Spookster, a tidy time in those conditions, i've been on bits of it lately and there are some drifts still, it's be a soggy round at the moment. Clockwise eh.. might have to try that.

Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
I think I'll head down for another crack at this in the next few weeks. Took me over 4 hours last time, but wasted far too much time checking and double checking the route description and walking bits I could have easily run. I reckon I could do this in about 3 hours if I pull my finger out.
So if you see anyone running round with 2 mad collies, it'll be me.

Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Had a run round today, conditions were perfect. Started/finished from home running up through Nutclough to Wood end bridge rather than running up and down the towpath to the White Lion though.

Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
That's not far off the record time FM. Looks like your home start could be slightly longer than a White Lion start as well. Impressive stuff.
-
Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Thanks MM. Now i know that the record is within my grasp i'll have to try an official run from the White Lion sometime soon.
-
Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Off round on Thursday morning for first time so will be taking it easy to learn the route. Does anyone know where the best place to park is as I don't ant to park anywhere I shouldn't? Cheers

Thanks, I completely missed that on the directions:o

Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Had a go yesterday morning, good dry conditions, got to Gibson mill with no nav problems, brilliant directions by the way MM, left the woods and got to the road and that's where I retired, I'd slipped on the road (whilst walking of all things) and broke my shoulder blade and upper arm, bloody typical, but just one of those things. I'll be having another go at the round later this year and will hopefully get round in one piece.

Sorry to hear this. Hope you recover soon.

Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Yes really bad luck that dp - I hope you recover OK and manage another go.

Would have understood if I did it while off road, roads are dangerous:p Won't be back out for a while which has thrown my race calendar out, so all the planned races have rolled over to next year. The challenge for this year is to get back to fitness, get some good quality base training down for next year and completing the Calder Valley Round.

Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Had a run round this yesterday. Excellent day for running if a little slippy underfoot (wet rock and Mizuno wave harriers just don't mix!). Stupidly managed to totally mess up the very obvious section down to Staups Mill by not reading the notes correctly and went a bit walkabout getting down from Stoodley so it ended up being a 17miler. Didn't log checkpoint times as was treating it as a recce but remember that I got to Stoodley in 2hr3m.
Total time 2h47m. Certainly one of the most enjoyable runs I've had for a long time, looking forward to having another go now I (hopefully) know the route. Quite jealous of the people living in some of the houses you pass that are tucked away in valleys or by themselves up on the hillsides...

Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Double CVR yesterday (01/06/13) in lovely warm conditions. Really dry underfoot.
Tried to pace myself and take it easy on first lap (ACW) and was pretty much spot on with a 2:52 lap. After a quick change in to trainers from trail shoes and a change of shirt set of back the way I had come(CW) for second lap. Began to really tire going up to Straups Mill and the prospect of that road run through Hardcastle Crags woods was playing heavily on my mind, but a head wash and cold drink at the Gibson Mill toilets perked me up enough to run most of the road. The last 60 mins or so was characterised by cramps in both calves and thighs and a painful hobble on any flat or downhill sections.
Lap 1: 2 hrs 52 mins
5 min rest
Lap 2: 3 hrs 26 mins
Total Time 6 hrs 23 mins
Spookster,
Holmfirth Harriers
Old Mill 31
Gibson Mill 52
Straups Mill 1:33
Stood Pike 2.11
Path 2.30
Cottages 2.43
1 Lap 2.52
5 mins to change shoes, change shirt and eat/drink a little.
Cottages (forgot to check time!)
Path 3.21
Stood Pike 3.52
Straups Mill 4.28
Gibson Mill 5.19 (toilet/drink stop 2 mins)
Old Mill 5.51
End Lap 2 6.23.00

Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Perfect conditions for a blast round this today, bone dry underfoot almost all the way and not too hot.
Time - 2hr15m36s

Wondering what time the top guys would get round this if they gave it a proper go (in good conditions). I'm thinking a sub 2hrs would be possible...

Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
GED that sounds like a new record to me. Top run.

Yes that's a new record beating Tom Brunt's 2-17. Congratulations Ged. Good to see a bit more activity on the route this year. I will do a summary of the completions so far this year during July.
-
Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
Yep well done Ged, nice work.. and as for the double round.. blimey, respect. Don't think i'm up for one of them any time soon!
-
Re: Calder V Round 2012 onward
I had a run round this on Saturday morning. With all the rain and sun recently some of the lesser traversed footpaths were pretty well covered in long grass and bracken and I came a cropper a couple of times, with hidden perils underfoot. But with an eye on Ged's time I was back up and running with no time lost.
As it turned out it was all to no avail* as I was outside the record in 2-17. The towpath was closed so the run back to the White Lion was horrible on the road, especially after I'd put in some work to get close.
Tempted to have another crack at it, but will have to wait for favourable conditions as Ged's put down a good time there.
*Though it is still a really enjoyable route taking in some paths I've never 'done' before.
-
Keep wanting to have a drive over, & have a go at the 'CVR' with a couple of club-mates, but not managed to arrange it all yet
-
Did this today with Ged. Slightly(!) slower than his best time, about 3.23, but for my first off-road run I was really pleased. What a fabulous route and a great morning for it (arrived home as the hail started). Was a great help having Ged to guide and generally keep me going, really enjoyed it :-D
-
Evening all, first post, so be kind :). I'm looking at having my first trot around this route through the day on either Tues 9th Sept or Fri 12th Sept. I'm not familiar with the area so expect it to take 3hrs plus (depending on how well I can navigate the course!). I've got the map and route from the go far website. Any pointers would be appreciated. Cheers Dave
-
Hi 3755
Not sure there's many pointers to give which probably explains the lack of replies!. The route directions/map are so good that it's pretty hard to go the wrong way! The only things I can think off are to take it easy on the first climb straight off the canal (it's a tough one) and watch out going down Dick's Lane cos it's pretty trippy (I've fallen over down there each of the 3 times I've done the route).
Hope you get a good day for it, it's a great route!
