It's true about the cakes as well. Last year they had a cake monitor with photographic memory to make sure no-one had more than one piece. Boo. Not like in the good old days.

I might bake some cakes, just done some and i must admit they're bloody lovely!! I'll offer me cakes to forum users only and be all elitist lol. :D:D
Is it all open land unrestricted land ? ie can I do a reccy ?
No probs with recce's at all. All on open land or footpaths. Calton Lees pasture in Chatsworth is walked all year, careful cos sheeps in lamb thou.
I'll be there, anyone else? I notice it's gained an extra mile since I last ran it.
I'll be there. Looking forward to this one, and hope the weather's as good as it is today...
Is anyone interested in car sharing from the Glossop area or is anyone travelling through Glossop on the way over to Grindleford, who could offer a lift?
Many thanks,
Mark
Be careful parking - the plod have hired a clamping firm due to chaotic parking last year.
Just seen the preliminary results - has anyone else been disqualified due to the faulty dibber point at Longshaw Moor? I have emailed the organisers to express my disappointment at this.
I thought that the CP at White Rake was an easy dib to miss mainly a marshall stood infront of it and when i went past it looking for it called me back to dib in. It was badly sited too.
Overall i thought the event was great though.
Comment overheard on the train from a Grindleford local:
"Walked the Grindleford Gallop yesterday, great day until the runners caught up with us, then got fed up with being sworn at to get out of the way at every style".
Even if this is only partly true and it was only a minority of the runners its still a shame and something we could do without.
Sadly this race seems to attract more than its fair share of twonks. I didn't see any walkers being harassed on Saturday but I did see plenty of wall/gate climbing at congested stiles and liberties being taken with the route. There were a few troublesome walkers who took to the Monsal Trail four abreast and just to make sure you couldn't sneak past, waved their walking sticks around over the verge. Rather like trying to get past Boadicea's chariot, but without the sense of history.
Shame, as it's a lovely route and well organised. Oh, yes - there were gel wrappers too.
Time for my tablets, I think...
Maybe all change for next year - one of the organisers commented to me that walkers were a PIA. The organisers have to get up at the crack of dawn then hang around for walkers some of whom had set off just before the runners and taken 3 hrs to get the White Rake! Why a walker would want to pay £12 to do a route they could do any day of the year is beyond me. And as for those sodding poles they carry - the number of times I've nearly seen people blinded, and yes they always seem to walk 4 abreast and block stiles. Having said that, the race did originate as a Walkers event when it was the Thornbridge 20 then several people decided to run it and things escalated. Maybe a time for a parting of the ways?
Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I guess those of you that run the Grindleford Gallop might be interested in a new event I'm putting on, the Peaks Challenge 20.
It's on Sunday 13th September (just over 2 weeks time). It's got quite a lot in common with the Grindleford Gallop (same part of the Peaks, similar distance, but it has a "suggested" route which you don't have to follow).
2 weeks before 9 Edges though which goes through much of the same course.
Hi All,
Anybody ever done this race,
www.grindlefordgallop.co.uk
and if so from the 21 miles covered, what is the ascent?
Cheers Forest!
Done it a few times. It combines a LDW challenge walk, with the walkers starting earlier, so, by Great Longstone (or thereabouts) you'll be encountering plenty of stick-brandishing walkers! A lot of the route is on tracks and trails - so quite quick. Not sure how much the total ascent is, but there are probably 4 hills of any significance. First from Froggatt up past Riley Graves to Eyam - steep in places. Second is over Great Longstone Moor - boggy. Third is up through Ball Cross Woods from Bakewell Station - steep and muddy. Last one (and the best one) is up to Wellingtons Monument from Baslow, so you need to save a bit for this. Winning time was a little over 2 hours 35 last year I think? (just checked - Andy Pead 1st in 2:28:18 - probably course record?) First 30 will be inside 3 hours.
Cheers for the reply,
Does anybody have the ascent data?
Due to go and recce the route in a couple of weeks,
Cheers

Hope that works. It was for my leisurely trot around last year. Feel free to go quicker :)
Crikey- just had a look at the website- over 400 entered already!!!!!!!!!
Does anyone know of a campsite/bunkhouse/camping barn close to the start of this? I've discovered the first train from Leeds would struggle to get me there in time so it looks like I'll have to find somewhere local to crash the night before.
Cheers
Try Hathersage Youth Hostel. Hathersage Train Station is only 3 stops from Sheffield on the Hope Valley Line (or catch the 272 bus). Then Grindleford Station is 1 stop back towards Sheffield in the morning. Then its a leisurely 10 mins stroll to the Race Start from Grindleford Station. After the race either get the train back to Sheffield (2 stops) or the 240 bus which stops right outside the finish.
Not part of the FRA calendar, but have any members entered this? Looks a decent setup and route.
Any thoughts, tips, advice on the 22 mile course gratefully received. And if you are running (or taking part in the walk) give me a shout so we can compare notes afterwards!
I'll be there...
Anybody on here doing this? I'll be plodding my way around.:)
Also, anybody done it before? Last year was down as twenty one miles but this year it is listed as twenty two. Just wondered if anybody was aware where (if any) route change has taken place. Purely just out of interest.
Yep, will be trotting this Saturday, been plodding for a few months recently so, not expecting too much! Did the Sandstone Trail a week back, 36 miles, 5281ft in 7hrs 11mins, so not expecting a record breaking run,
Recce'd this, some seven weeks back, when there was still snow on the top coming up from the climb after monsal trail section, up to cp
Garmin said just about 22 miles, 4325ft some folks take two short cuts one on the route, tut! which can make a little difference, but this year from final instructions, marshall's will be on these points,
Should be a gun un, good luck,
[quote 4325ft [/quote]
Are you sure this is correct?? Is there really that much climb
Im plodding too. The website suggests no route change.
Lets hope for a decent day - its a lovely trot this ;)
Piglet, I've seen that on somebody else's Garmin too so it must be right! I think there are four fairly significant climbs.
Really looking forward to this one!
Well im gobsmacked I never realized :o
There dosn't "seem" to be that much climb, but as i never carry technology who am I to know :D
Me neither. A tape measure is about as technical as it gets for me...:D
Helped Marshal 2 years ago at White Rake (then demoted to kitchen boy). First check point / water stop on the Gallop.
To keep out minds off the frost bite we were asking runners 'how many miles on your GPS' - there were huge variations in distance never mind climb.:)
No snow left locally, but its been frosty most nights this week so should be 'firm' under foot.
