Appear to be the same as 2017 (for the senior men at least)
A muddy heavy National and I've got beggar all fitness to go and use, damn!

Thanks Nic. Saves me buying a program for £3. Just need to save up for the parking now!
Could be an interesting day... numerous dire warnings of potential car-park chaos due to the weather, and lord knows what the course will be like!
As always a great day at the Nationals.
Certainly was tough conditions.... I wasn’t at the Alton Towers Race a few years back, which seems to have gone down in legend at our club... but today was the toughest XC course I’ve experienced.... such a mixture of fast running and then endless bogginess which made the Lee Mill Relay look like the turf at Wembley Stadium.
Personally I felt I’d ran fairly well, and certainly made plenty of places up in the 2nd half of the race, so was slightly downbeat to only finish 1079th. Whilst it was a pb of over 150 places (not surprising considering it was the first National I’d done whilst vaguely fit and uninjured), I had been hoping to get in the top 1000, but would have needed to pull out another 1min20 to have made my target. Doesn't sound much, but at the time the thought of speeding up to that extent was impossible...
Had a great battle with an old schoolmate from another local club... after swapping places a couple of times in the first couple of laps, I put a big shift in on the middle third, turned round expecting him to be out of sight, and he was only 20 yards behind, eyes fixed on me! I knew it would go to the wire, and luckily held him off by 4 seconds in a desperate dash for the line.
Well done ba-ba and GazB who finished considerably higher than me!
Team wise, we lost our fastest guy with an injury in the warmup, but managed a pleasing 29th team. 4th Midlands team behind the heavyweights of Bristol&West, Birchfield Harriers and Notts AC.
In the ladies, Aldershot took the team prize, followed by Leeds, then Highgate Harriers.... I noticed a couple of fellrunning names high up... Bronwen Owen and a lady from Holmfirth Harriers...
In the men’s, Tonbridge regained the title, with Bristol&West and Leeds 2nd ad 3rd, not sure in which order. I noticed Matlock had some fellrunning names high up.... Billy Cartwright, Harry Holmes, Joshua Jardine. Keswick who have a strong XC squad, based on their Fell team, were absent, although I think most of them in action at High Cup Nick instead.
Shout to all the Fell teams I spotted today.... Kendal AC, Clayton Le Moors, Bingley Harriers, Blackburn Harriers (2nd lady), Altrincham, Holmfirth Harriers, Springfield Striders, Anthony Kay’s very own Thames Valley, and Race The Sweeper’s Buxton...
Good summary Travs. First National XC I've done and loved it. Felt like going into battle at the start when a big cheer went up as we started to wade through the standing water. Not sure "muddy" and "heavy" do the conditions justice!
I bloody love the National, even if I'm about 150 places down on my best.
The stand-out current fell runner performance was Dan Haworth's (Matlock) monster run to 19th place. I believe he's in Marathon training. Caroline Lambert (Ribble Valley) was 26th in the Women's race.

Great running from you ba-ba…. if that was a below-par run...!!

Doing a few fell races and mountain trials this year
Might head over to watch the inter-counties at Loughborough on Saturday if nothing else comes up. Will be interesting to watch a real high-level race without any bias or club loyalties.
One of the minor disapointments of running the championship races, is that you don't get to see what's going on at the front end. It's a shame the ICs and Nationals aren't televised, even a red-button jobbie.
Mark Hookway's (Tonbridge coach) videos on Youtube are OK to get an overview of what went on, if you have the time to spool through a bit.
Yes they really should be on tv.
It's a bit of a sad commentary on the sporting priorities of this country... you can dress up like an absolute muppet and walk the London Marathon in 7 hours, and you're virtually guaranteed tv coverage. But win the Nationals or Inter-Counties, and outside of Athletics Weekly you're unlikely to get even a column inch in a newspaper.
We have a few guys running in the Warwickshire team, which does look reasonably strong this year (although merely being "strong" is par for the course at that level!)
A glance through the start lists and there's some top fell names gracing the race tomorrow.
My mum enquired yesterday why I wasn't running the inter-counties... :D
Good racing today at Loughborough. I think the winner was that guy Mohammed from Southampton AC.
I believe the top three counties were...
1 North East
2 Yorkshire
3 Hampshire
... But I stand to be corrected.
Plenty of fellrunning names on the start list but I only recognised Jez Brown running well for North Wales.
Standard appeared to be fantastic as you would expect.
My county inexplicably managed to not field a full team. Despite a county champs earlier this year with a couple of hundred people, and 15 names on the start list, only managed to field 5 people. I'll not be critical at all (especially as I'm trying to organise a county team for the Fells!), and I know four or five of the fastest guys were tempted to go and run a road race somewhere for money, but seems a massive shame...

Anyone doing the Masters XC at Corwen tomorrow?
We have a few guys and girls heading over in various categories.
Not for me though, i'll be just down the road at Aran...
Something to look forward to.... National Cross Country next year at Parliament Hill... fantastic venue... March 6th 2021.
