Re: Great Whernside 1/11/2008
Map of course attached. Its very straight forwards affair, out and back from the campsite to the summit.
Its not in the online fixture list because that is the choice of the organiser. Full details are in the FRA handbook though, also the race was previewed in 'The Fell Runner' magazine in I think February 2007 prior to last years championships.

Sorry the map's a bit blurred due to low resolution, but I think you will get the drift when you compare it with your own map.

Re: Great Whernside 1/11/2008
Are we parking in that boggy field again Peejay or should we find a spot on the road?
Cheers

Re: Great Whernside 1/11/2008
The field is available again this year, and you will have paid for the privilige of parking there in your entry fee. Unfortunately degree of boggyness is beyond my control

Re: Great Whernside 1/11/2008
Well who's going to this then?

Well if you're on Whernside you'll be on your own. At least one person seems to confuse Whernside and Great Whernside every year .

Re: Great Whernside 1/11/2008
I'm intending to be there too. Something tells me it'll be a bit colder and damper than running in Marseille last weekend...

It was pretty warm apparently. No hassle with the medical certificate?

BBC weather says it is going to be sunny and a high of 7c. Sounds absolutely Mediteranian to me!:D
Bring your sun cream!

Re: Great Whernside 1/11/2008
No but may camp the night before, is the campsite cheap and near a pub?
Derby, we'll have to make time a beer after the race what you reckon

It was! Several people were hospitalised after collapsing, and, sadly, there was one fatality (a guy who passed out two hundred metres from the end).
Report to follow, either on the relevant thread, or on the Fellponies site (since I ran as an MP (Mediterranean Pony)).
Regarding the medical certificate: I'll PM you, but it WAS accepted.

Stagger.
The knee worked fine today at Osmotherly. So I'll be there. Am I doing the driving? Think I owe you and Mrs S a lift.

Re: Great Whernside 1/11/2008
Your 4x4 will be just the job.
The car park (field) tends to be a little damp, then it turns in to a blooming great mud bath.
Mrs Stagger is on football duties but I think the bullet might be coming if he can get a day pass.

Stagger.
The 4 * 4 has gone. But I now have the ugliest car in the world. :D So you and Bullett will be okay for a lift, and if we get stuck you can push. :D
Let me know what time you want picking up.

Re: Great Whernside 1/11/2008
For those of us driving cars that don't like mud, is it possible to park anywhere drier, eg on the road or in a 'proper' car park? I've just had to pay a garage bill of £1600, don't want to lose the bugger in a bog...

Re: Great Whernside 1/11/2008
If the parking is in the field behind the church which it usually is then you wont get bogged down in the field. I've parked there in all weathers for the last 10 years at least and the only place it gets trickey is a little bit muddy at the entrance after a day of heavy rain when the odd car sometimes needs a helping shove. The field has a very shallow top soil on top of rubble and stone which keeps it well drained. (I used to dig the latrines trench every July for Bingley Harriers triple T event!!!!!!):):)

Me and ChrisG should be there. Never done it before, looking forward to it!

Re: Great Whernside 1/11/2008
What a morning up the dale! Loads of forumites out, fantastic organisation, perfect weather, what must be one of the very best descents and a pint in a packed Dales pub :)
-
Re: Great Whernside 1/11/2008
Nice to meet you Sir
I agree with the descent quote but it does take the wind out of the sails on the ascent.
Well done and thank-you to Peejay and his merry band of helpers.
Some good tails to tell but some ale to down first:)

We had to shove a car out at 10.30am who was only using it to turn round.;)

Re: Great Whernside 1/11/2008
Yep, brilliant race, conditions were difficult, very boggy , which meant times were a bit down. Took a fall coming down the rocks just before Hag Dyke, anyone else take a tumble? Thanks to PeeJay and everyone who helped to organise the event, must of been pretty chilly up top for them!

Re: Great Whernside 1/11/2008
it was easier to marshall than run up that big chuffing hill!
well done to wharfedale for the team prize.
ian holmes had a great run as did helen.
robert jebb and sharon were your summit marshalls
younger brother andrew won his first ever prize and is a great talent for the future and one to watch out for.
bingley who were 2nd team had ruth whitehead as there 3rd counter!
pj's organising skills are always spot on and always ensures a trouble free smooth run event.
im sure he even organised the weather.
he intends to get the results up here in about 3 days.

Re: Great Whernside 1/11/2008
Excellent race. It really is a brilliant descent.
As Stagger pointed out to me, my new Walshes ran very well, though my legs struggled to keep up. I might buy a size slower next time.
Impressive run for the line Derby. Are you moving to sprinting?
I can vouch for Fleeter's fall - I saw the blood . Keep up the good work though, young 'un, you're getting faster and faster.
Loved PJ's disclaimer at the bottom of the weather forecast! Very funny and topical...
Thanks to all who helped; also to Simon and Neil from Baildon who detoured to the car park in case I needed a shove out the mud. It was Neil's first fell race, and judging by the grin on his face at the end, I think we've got another one hooked!

It's always time for the truth.
(Unless you're Russell Brand and it concerns Andrew Sach's granddaughter).
