Never done it but would like to have a go this year. Whats navigation like ?
We were just checking it on the eryri website last night
http://racerecce.co.uk/racerecce/Eve...spx?Eventid=31
looks like it's on there.
I found it navigation fine when I did it

And very cheeky I know but a rough idea of the route ?
Re: Moel Eilio Sat 15th May
The start and finish points have moved about in the last few years, but the basic route is the same. Last time I ran it, the race started on the lane at about GR 574600. You make your way up the lane, until you get to about GR 562597, at which point you head up the fairly obvious track to the summit of Moel Eilio. From here you go straight to Foel Gron and then to Foel Goch. From Foel Goch, run down to Bwlch Maesgwm and then up the final big climb to Moel Cynghorion. From the summit, head NW down, depending on your personal taste, a great descent. Aim to meet the Maesgwm bridleway again at about GR 578571. Finally, follow the bridleway back to the finish at the youth hostel at GR 574596.
Re: Moel Eilio Sat 15th May
Many thanks to you both, Lurker and Fortinbras. Sounds hard. Can't wait.
Re: Moel Eilio Sat 15th May
good description Fortinbras.
the terrain is quite fast going as it is mostly on grass and tracks.two big climbs to tackle i,e Moel Eilio and Cynghorion but all very runnable.navigation is quite straightforward, obvious tracks and fence lines on most of the route ,the only real route choice is the line from Cynghorion to the Maescwm path, although this depends if there is a checkpoint on Foel Gron(some runners skirt around it)
Re: Moel Eilio Sat 15th May
Yep - looking forward to this one again - it was my first "comeback" race after 18 years in the wilderness last year - and thoroughly enjoyed the 4 seasons in one race conditions that we had...hailstones...not kidding you...very windy! but great to be out there...the run down from Cynghorion to the path was hard going - but enjoyable...remember once on the path you still have a good treck back to the finish line...
Re: Moel Eilio Sat 15th May
In the past few years they've included Foel Gron. I think that's now the route for the future, because it's the course Nick Swinburn set the record on (and I think the old Croasdale? record too..).
Was going down to Cribyn but only back from the States Thursday and then off to Croatia Monday so if I can't be arsed with the travel to Cribyn I'm quite tempted to make a rare North Walean appearance...

Re: Moel Eilio Sat 15th May
the Cribyn is a worth while race to do a good little route.is it a championship race?
Re: Moel Eilio Sat 15th May
Is there a checkpoint on the path at that grid ref? or is it just a matter of running down hill where you want and joining the path at somepoint, had a run round the other day and theres many possibilities off cynghorian and at the bottom theres a massive ditch and loads of this tussocky grass, stuff. haha, this sound about right? saul

Yeah Welsh Open, but not done/won't do enough to count , I just fancied it as it looks a classic race, and then combine it with a Black Mountains recce ahead of Septembers Brit Champs race.
But that means back Thursday, away Saturday/Sunday, away Monday > Croatia, and that's now looking a bit of a ball ache.
Re: Moel Eilio Sat 15th May
Saul, there's normally a small trod through the tussocks, I almost straight line it. I think the CP is normally at the same point as the Peris one, so just on the path, before the sheep folds, unavoidable really so enroute.
I ran through a few weeks ago and it was still pretty boggy through there, but we've had little rain since.
Re: Moel Eilio Sat 15th May
Righto nice one Iain, Ill have a another bash round tomorrow and see, should be a good race looking forward to it
Re: Moel Eilio Sat 15th May
Good Weather today for this race - was made up to knock 13 mins off last years time - same again next year and I might even win a prize! ;-)...1.22.59
thanks to the marshalls/organisers again.
Re: Moel Eilio Sat 15th May
Da Iawn Dyl.
Was a awsome route and the first climb was a beast!! and the last one up Cynghorion, but the last descent was INSANE, loved it. Happy with 2nd and 1:09:12 at my first attempt. Will know what to expect next year. Thanks for the brilliant prize, £40 Pete Bland Sports voucher and a expensive looking Salomon vest. Awsome!!
Re: Moel Eilio Sat 15th May
Great race and a fantastic day for it, the views were awesome. I couldn't help stop a couple of times to take photos(sad git). My time was no where near as impressive as some but I don't think I'll ever be competing for top spot.
Thanks to organisers, marshals and mountain rescue for keeping an eye on us.
Now to the pub I think

who won? are the results out yet?
Re: Moel Eilio Sat 15th May
:)1:21 for me today, almost exactly the same time as last year! Can't understand it, thought I was in better condition and last years race was so blustery! (wind must have been behind me up the first climb last year!)
Great day though, enjoyed it and its the last run for me before a family holiday to Egypt:cool:
