Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Usual slow worms in the garden, caught a couple having sex last week, lasted for hours and have the photos :o. Male grabs the females head in his mouth and holds on like grim death ...... she simply lets him get on with it for a hour or two.
No comments needed

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
We have a resident squirrel at work, that fights with a club footed crow for scraps of food, nearly ran the poor sod over tonight going to work, slammed brakes on and swerved to miss him. Was glad to see him hop off unharmed in my rear view mirror. Seen the resident fox fleetingly at midnight too.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
just a handful of rabbits this morning that my dogs wanted to eat for breakfast.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Lots of young rabbits whilst out this afternoon, no sign of the parents (perhaps they're watching TV?). Also my 2nd sighting of the year of a green woodpecker, makes it all worthwhile. :o

The word 'curl' means something that 'curls' - like a snake.
And a 'Ewe' is a sheep.
So a 'CURLEW' is a Welsh term for a curly fleeced sheep :) .

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Nearly stood on an adder on Jura yesterday and had a close encounter with a hen harrier:eek: !

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
lots from the scotland trip including 100's of deer, mountain hares, rabbitts Ptarmigan, plovers, sky larks and even a Dotterel (i was told by a bird spotter nearby) all the other usuall suspects but the main highlight for me was a wild otter playing/hunting high in the hills, I sat and watched whilst muncing flapjack for 10 minutes. Awsome
Also saw a 4 Golden Eagles, 2 ospreys and two owls (one was a barn owl buzzing a smaller bird of prey Kestrel? eating a catch on a fence post) very early one morning.
It made going solo and early in to the wilds all the more rewarding

IanD your trip to Scotland sounds very rewarding.
Sat watching a wildife programme early this morning whilst having breakfast Simon King had a great clip of a family of otters playing in a lock. Dotterels are pretty rare to see one of the Plover family.

I wouldn't have know the Dotteral if this other couple weren't there. They were the first people I'd seen on my longer trip.
Also saw another bird that was Skylark sized and stayed low to the ground but had very distinctive red and yellow head but can't find it in any of my books, Any Ideas:confused:

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
When I was out cycling yesterday evening I watched a barn owl catch a baby rabbit and fly back to its nest in a nearby wood.
I was able to follow the barn owl along the road for about 400 yards with the bird flying about 10 yards from me at about 20mph. A wonderful sight.:)

A bunch of baby wrens which must have popped out of their nest. They were cute and still had fluffy bits of down on their heads.
A few pairs of hares.
A male Reed Bunting singing his little head off on the edge of the moor.
Also, 7 moles in my traps and a dead vixen that someone must have shot. Because they had left it to rot in an open field I smelt it before I spotted it. It was not nice as it probably had some cubs nearby.

traditionally Dotterels could be seen on top o' Pendle 'ill in early spring...a stoppin-off place on their way to breedin grunds much further north.
Not sure if they're seen these days?...too much human/dog activity which disturbs them...'n me too!:(
