Re: Do you remember getting in
Yes i have just had the convo with my sisters about doing racing etc, and they all laughed and said get the first 5 minutes over with first LOL!
So, there was no laughter on your first race, but then again did you train for any of it?
Re: Do you remember getting in
No training what so ever! Still cycle to and from work (30 miles per day). That first race i will never forget Lloyd Taggart Flying down the hill past me with a big grin on his face while i was struggling only half way up. I have been training a little more for the last couple of months but have to be very carefull because of a bad climbing accident eleven years ago. The doctors told me i would never run again after that, two weeks after they took the plasters off i walked up Snowdon! Never under estimate the power of positive thought, but do listen to your body. It's all good fun!

Sorry to hear about the back injury, having a hip injury i can very well sympathise with that, i like that saying you have added...
Never under estimate the power of positive thought!
Many thanks Skennaugh x
Re: Do you remember getting in
It wasn't a back injury, my love. I broke 3 bones in my left ankle and two in my right, Fractured both Calcaneous (heel) and lots of soft tissue damage. It was a 40ft fall onto limestone, all gear ripped out and i landed on my hands and feet facing up at the sky. I still climb, love to cycle, run and fly big kites.

Oh god, sorry i got mixed up, but blimey that is seriously one horrible injury, painful too, glad you kept going!
Re: Do you remember getting in
Home at last! I don't remember any pain, I cried lots when the doc finally convinced me i wouldn't run the maraton a month later! The worst bit of the day was after my mates had carried me to the landrover at the top of the cliff they put me down in a huge pile of dog shit! Took ages to get my climbing shoes off, there was no way anyone was cutting them off!
Re: Do you remember getting in
Id be more upset with the dog shit LOL!
Re: Do you remember getting in
Bouncing a bit here, excuse spelling please! The poop bothered me lots, but they all laughed while i struggled to get my new sportivas off my feet. Got revenge when one of those same friends fell at Giggleswick (Think it was called sweet Gean Vincent ) He had no protection to pop, reached round a nice overhang and just dropped! I told him they would cut his pants and top off ( he was wearing a Buffalo shirt at the time )! Found out later he broke three ribs! We were telling him jokes for weeks to make him laugh! Stuff happens, sympathy isn't always the best course, hows your hip?
Re: Do you remember getting in
Buffalo shirt means something special LOL soz only joking, is he okay now?
Hip is fine now Thanks, was on crutches for what seemed like years, but generally on and off in 2 years, had lots of physio, the hip injury wasn't the worse one, i now have acute hearing, caused by a blow to the head from the car going around and around before it stopped! acute hearing is called hyperacusis, muscians can get it, people who go to concerts also can, its a damage to the auditory nerve in the middle ear.
So make a great spy when people are whispering!!!
Re: Do you remember getting in
I prefer a cute ass! (sorry couldn't help that) That sounds annoying. I suppose sounds sound annoying.
Re: Do you remember getting in
You have taken the hardest step-even thinking about running. It won't be very easy at first but give it a few months and you won't regret it, me and my family now have the best social lives thanks to all the fab friends we have made due to running You will encounter the most genuine bunch of people ever (always ready to help keep you going & keep morale up). If you have kids its also a brill sport to teach them that money hasnt spolit all sports (like footie) and that the person who comes last has run just as far as the winner!!-not a bad lesson to take through life?! I would advise that in a while when you cant see any improvement re-visit one of your first runs and you may be suprised at the difference (we constantly say we cant ever imagine anyone actually finding running easy-just somtimes it isnt as hard!!)

Excellent bit of advice there AWNTY
I must remember to read this again when I get back to running as I know it is going to be a tough incline!
It's amazing what a bit of encouragement from other people can do! :)

I see a 1-2-1 fitness instructor next week, who is also a friend, he is going to help me do a run/walk program, thanks, i can see its going to be difficult, infact probably darn right impossible, but i think i got to try...i have nothing but admiration for the runners on this site, looking at the photos and the weather conditions, looks blumming crazy, i went to watch a race in Calderdale, i was abit bored, because i was looking after kids in the car, not out there getting involved. Saw the finish line, met one or two of the lads on here, had to do a walk across a field, and a bridge and up a hill, and i was blumming knackered at the top, had the wrong clothing on, wrong shoes etc.
There is a virus on my computer, so i might not be online for a few days till i can sort it out, but i shall take on board what you written, many thanks!!!

Enjoy the buzz NB. I'm sure you'll get it! It won't be easy at first but learn to soak up the feeling you get from the achievement. ;)
Good luck with the virus!

I would have given anything to be in the trauma room that day.....If you came into Resus on my shift after falling off a moderate Skennaugh you wouldn't be getting any sympathy!!!! I do have a nice pair of tough cuts though...:-P
Re: Do you remember getting in
Thanks Al! I didn't get much sympathy as it was. How are you? Thought you would have been there on New years day.

I was going to race, but got asked to work so ended up doing that instead. Am trying to make an effort to get fit again, been so lazy over the last year!!
Re: Do you remember getting in
Ah! You're doing a great job though. Must give a lot of satisfaction. I'm getting fired up for the MMM. If i can knock an hour off my time i'll be happy.
Re: Do you remember getting in
Can't wait to do my RN training though, am trying to get into the army to do it as they will pay me a proper wage, offer more development beyond there, it will be a chance to get off this island (don't get me wrong I love it but there is more to see in the world before I settle down), and I am hoping to move into more acute critical care areas post qualification as I prefer A+E to the wards (whereas on the IOM I would have to do 2 years on the wards before I could even try to move back into acute).
Good luck for the MMM, I was debating about getting myself fit for it, as I would love to smash my time of 2 years back. Have to see though, need to get well (you get a lot of bugs at work) before getting fit!!
Re: Do you remember getting in
Great stuff Al, sounds like you have found a calling! I traveled a lot when i was younger, now i'm just having fun.
