Myo xp belt with accu battery for me , looked at the apex at the time but even though the quoted light output is brighter it doesn't last very long at that output.

As an example the the Silva L1 has a quoted beam distance of 63m but after 30 mins this drops to 37m and after 10 hours 13m these figures are slightly better than a standard Myo xp but with a accu battery pack the Myo has a 41m beam for 12 hours.

I need a long lasting full beam because I'm going to do all the lakeland classics at night in winter but its overkill for most runners

The only slight problem is the battery stopped working in March (bought it in November) and I haven't got it sorted yet (my fault not petzl this is a reminder for me to take it back :))

As for navigating in bad weather I tend to put the Myo on its lowest setting and hold it at waist height as you get dazzled by the reflection otherwise.

I'm needing a decent headtorch as i've been drafted in to help on BG leg tonight.
The local shops only have in the Myolite 3, does anyone know how this compares with the myo XP you have all mentioned?

Can't wait! :eek: If you are really stuck for a headtorch, take an ordinary torch, best you can get hold of. You will find that in mist you tend to take headtorches off anyway and hold them at about waist level because the beam just bounces right back into your eyes otherwise.

Do they have to be solo or might you enjoy some company?

Cheers Marg . I've just been & bought a Myolite and some spare batteries (£25 total) and i'll take my Tikka & Zipka as back up. I'll report back after weekend

I'm tying to make the cut offs as well (was doing ok on the Ennerdale but decided to try a new route round Haystacks and ended up doing a bit of scrambling :o )

I thought just Ennerdale was audacious enough! I also have a had a plan to do the Lakeland Classics in winter for some time now but mine differs in that I was going to do them in daylight but over 6 consecutive days.

Was going to report on Myolite Head torch, but hardly used it as weather was perfect. Seemed very bright. for the short while it was used, but it wasn't really dark enough to be put under the test.
It was much brighter than the std. Tikkas & Zipkas.
The other navigator had a basic wind up hand held torch which was much brighter!!!

I just want to rave about my Silva LX which arrived yesterday (79.94 inc P&P from www.sailgb.com) - I tried it out last night and it's fantastic :-)

I've had the Petzl Myo 5 and also the Petzl Myo XP and found them under powered and difficult to run with. I've never used the big Silva lamps - the cost and fuss with batteries put me off.

I charged the battery with the auto charger, put it in the waistbelt, ran the lead down the inside of my top (to avoid catching the wire and to enable easy taking on/off of my windproof), clipped on the diffuser and was ready to go :-)

Whereas my previous night-time runs had been an adventure - this was just fun and I found I could mostly ignore the fact that I was wearing a headtorch. I got a bright enough spot to see the ground clearly, but also good peripheral vision. I could read a map, look at my watch, look in my bumbag, take my top on/off (all without stopping or fiddling with the torch), follow faint tracks in the grass. Stiles and gates didn't jump out of the dark at me, and I only stumbled once. For most of the way the only limit on speed was my fitness. The only real problem I had was when I put on my hat...

The charger is no fuss - 6 hrs for a complete charge - and then it lasts for 15hrs at full power. The only real problem I had was that I'll have to change the waistbelt as the one supplied is elastic. I think it'll do me now for everything, except that for night time races I might consider one of the big Silva ones, as the LX uses the same battery and charger, so it's only £80 to upgrade.

mine arrived in post this morning.. got it on your recommendation. Looking forward to giving it a go.. anything is going to be better than the one I've been using which I'll pass on to my wife.. I note you used the diffuser which says is for close-up work??

Glad you liked it too nikalas. I've had a bad cough almost ever since that post so I've only managed to use it a few times yet.

Did you use the diffuser?

first two runs I did without the diffuser.. am going to try with tonight, will report back.

I'm surprised you didn't use the diffuser - without it you get a fantastic bright spot but no peripheral vision. Very useful for seeing tree branches, turn-offs, or your watch!

On Sunday I did a run round Shining Tor in 54:33 - last night I did it in the dark in 55:47 :-)
The slower time was in part due to it being much wetter and slippier and me neglecting to take my proper fell shoes! So much better than my miserable slow runs last winter.

you're right... so much better with diffuser!

Don't get too excited about the Silva L range. One of our members bought a L1 (3W luxeon) a couple of years ago for the 'Bowland Bat runs'. After only a few months he had trouble with the cable from the battery box to the light unit and had it replaced. Middle of last winter the control circuitry in the light unit burnt out and he gave up on it. He finished up buying a HID mountain bike lamp from the USA via the ether.

another vote for princeton apex, great for my early morning off road runs

I am currently using a Petzl Myo XP (3 watt LED). I find this pretty good, but I will upgrading to the new version , though this unfortunately doesn't come out until spring.

Just got one last week for my birthday. Wasn't the luxury spar day or sexy underwear I was expecting but a lot more practical (or so I was told!) ;)

It is very good, especially for where we live, where there are no street lights just dark country roads and fields. Looks like I've no excuses now not to getting out running!! Also quite comfortable to wear too.

I have the same one but due to good exchange rate it was only about £39.
Its just a fraction better than my mates myo, although the battery's don't last just as long.
So thats your choice. Light or battery's?

Yeh I've had it for a few months. done a few leg 1 BG supports and some recent bat runs. Cracking headtorch.
