No Daz. Not done it yet. TBH for long enough thought it out of my league but reckon its on my list now. Problem is my list keeps getting longer!!! Looking at another go at Bullock Smithy maybe, but I think I need time off work.

fjell_guy - not sure if I'll be doing Bullock Smithy this year - will decide closer to time...
meanwhile... Manhar & I are an item! (no, not like that!) - our OCT entry is going in the post as we speak... :D
Doing the OCT this year for the first time. I've done enough in the lakes to know most of the route although there is a little bit i'm unclear on - the section from the base of Little Narrowcove to the head of Mosedale on the way to Cockley Beck. I haven't been to the head of Eskdale or indeed upper Eskdale for years.
It appears from the map and my memory of this magnificent place that the bets route is to go over the Esk and stay left of Great Moss as you work down the valley, hitting the little col at 227052 and heading SW to hit the path near Pianet Knott before climbing up to the saddle and dropping into Mosedale.
Any thoughts?
There is an alternative off Sca fell pike, which is more direct. But the first bit is a bit awkward through flat-ish crags.(worth a recce if you want to do it). After that it is mainly steep grass with a stream to follow. At the bottom you cross then follow the river around great moss and scar lathing, and the rest is how you describe.
That is the best route I know of anyway.

Very useful new website. My memory of great moss was sketchy, oops.
You will enjoy it though Mark, it's a great day out in the hills. Just hope the weather cooperates this year. The drop off Sca fell pike is a bit tricky at first on that line though. I remember that much.
I'm going to go up and have a look I think. any excuse for a foray into eskdale. Thanks Alan and others for the advice.
Its been little quiet on here this year. Anyone not looking for a last minute partner swap
Could anyone please tell me if it's ok to stay overnight in a camper on the national trust car parks at NDG and ODG.....cheers.
Darren
I always tend to stay at NDG/Stickle Barn car park. There are signs saying no overnight camping but during the summer months there are always a few campervans and people staying in their cars. i have never been challenged even when the NT warden drives in at about 8 in the morning. Another venue I have stayed is the road behind Rothay Park i Ambleside. Again there are usually a few camper vans parked there.
Simon
SO looking forward to this :D
Manhar & I both went well at Lakes Mountain 42, so hopeful of beating the cut-offs (which are a bit more relaxed this year anyway)
weather should be a tad better than LM42 as well
So they are. I'd have entered again if I'd known! Last time it was a struggle to make both cut-offs (got to Cockley Beck without about 10 minutes left I think), then got to the finish with an hour to spare despite having to stop for 10 minutes.
Next year perhaps :)
And for real quiet the NT one at Blea tarn between Great and Little Langdale
I know someone who needs a replacement running partner, if anyone knows anyone and its ok with the RO. PM me please
Some photos from OCT 2014 here
What a superb race, as ever.

It was me who passed you on the road down Wrynose I was having a bit of a day like you I should have brought my camera ;)
Told my partner I was wanting to do 7 min/miles down the road earlier on in the race and he reminded me at three shire stone so had to go for it! did sub 6 mins in the end
Yesterday was certainly an epic day out. Thank you to Daz for driving/pacing/naving & tip top scheduling between the checkpoints and all points in between. Wanted to stop & have a picnic at the Cockley beck checkpoint. The slog up to the top of Coniston seemed to go on for ever but it was good to see a few teams coming towards us as we'd not seen anyone in front for a few hours.
Excellent write up & photo's Zephr.
Thank you to all the marshalls & all at Achilles Ratti for a superbly run event and 1 where you certainly earn the right to wear your t shirt.
Many thanks to Chris and the lovely Ratti helpers. The food stations were a welcome sight for much needed fluid and energy, the bananas at Cockley really hit the spot. Good to see plenty familiar faces and the high fives along the Coniston ridge certainly lifted the spirits. Excellent write up Tim and thanks for leading the way off Scafell, what a brilliant route. A day to remember in amazing landscape with almost perfect weather... The company wasn't bad either, cheers Mark you're a star.
Many Thanks to Chris and all the similarly cheery marshals for such a superb event - this is what fell racing is all about as far as I'm concerned. :)
glorious weather enhanced the beauty of the route and the Lakes in general - enjoyment guaranteed!
Thanks & Congratulations to Manhar - a model partner - good company, cheerful & positive throughout
finally my anal-retentive attention to a detailed schedule paid dividends (I knew it would one day ;) ) as our catch-phrase as we passed through each CP at/near the back was "We're pacing ourselves!" - this paid off in spades when we beat the cut-off at Cockley Beck by the handsome margin of 1 minute!
being rewarded with the prospect of the climb up Grey Friar soon wiped the smiles off our faces though!
thankfully we didn't need to cut things quite as fine getting in to the finish and clocked a comfortable 11:51
I am wearing the T-shirt now
I have no plans to take it off
Very disappointing behaviour by 4 runners caught on camera climbing a fence.
Look at the height of the fence in the first shot and then how they left it.

Note the height of the fence now

Appalling behaviour not needed in fell running.
Sounds great mate. Glad you had a good day.....I can't say I am not jealous.
Hope to get one of those shirts of my own sometime, though, as with all races, I have seen it run in HORRENDOUS weather and thought,"I may be out in this, but I don't have hours and hours of it left!"
Well done to all who started it.
It looks like they missed the small single-track path branching down and right off the main wide path, realising there mistake later (like most of us ) didn't want to back track, or maybe didn't even know where they had gone wrong. So decided to cut down and over the fence. It's unfortunate that more than one team went wrong.
I was following a team that were debating going straight on at that same point, and without intervention may have ended up in the same predicament.
There will be no time for photos next time. We will beast each other next year, now we've both been on the receiving end once. I'm willing to bet you won't repeat that decent from 3 shires next year. Hopefully we will both be too knackered. Still it was a good effort though.
Not to condone this in anyway but wouldn't it be better to identify the culprits offline and speak to their club captain?
Posting these distant images online only puts on record the actions of the minority but paints us all in a bad light.
