Re: Welsh 1000 metres - Pictur
Iain,
I thought I had gone early enough, 8:30 am, got to the top, stopped there for a bit to eat and a peek at the new building, it was about 10 by the time I started the descent, obviously not early enough. Will have to start earlier next time.
P.S Took me 46mins to get down, I am usually around the 37-38 mark.
Cheers
SJ

1000m peaks is bad, but Snowdon race is worse, because in the snowdon race you hit the crowds at pace, lets face it in the 1000m you have to try to not be over taken by them...
If you run up Snowdon, early or late is the answer.
The main reason my one and only Snowdon race appearance will not be repeated. Great event but the crowds are out of control. The runners coming the other way are suprisingly not a problem,it's the walkers that spoil it for me. Oblivious to anything further than 2 foot in front of there nose.
Andi Jones mentioned this after last years win. I doubt anyone will get close to the record with the crowds as they are.
Re: Welsh 1000 metres - Pictur
All I can say was that I was glad to finish! I felt brilliant for the first two hours, the weather was amazing, then I ran out of water and had a pretty dodgy half an hour or so until the first water station. I probably had a bit of heat stroke as I suffered with stomach cramps for the next two hours and have vowed never to eat another jelly baby in my life. I was told at pen-y-pass that I didn't look good, which obviously is the last think you want to hear, but managed to stuff a mars bar down and get on it. I found the crowds on the PYG track manageable and basically treated it like a day out in Paris (look down keep on walking, barge them out of the way if they don't move).
I was more than an hour over my target time, but I've got to admit it felt good just to finish this one.

There is a beautiful spring that feeds a small hidden stream running along the crest of thr ridge between Aber Falls and Bera Mawr. Great to refill your bottle at around the 600m contour to last you till Ogwen. The water is top quality.

Re: Welsh 1000 metres - Pictur
First time out on the full 1000ms for me and happy to have just got round on such a scorcher! Also, ran out of water and am grateful to the lovely Nant yr Ogof stream just past Ogwen for saving my attempt, followed by the marshalls on Carnedd Ugain, who topped up my bottle enough to get me over the line. Agree with previous posts regarding the crowds on the way up, completely surreal, but as I wasn’t going at any pace by then anyway, for me not a real problem - just kept my head down and was totally relieved to get to finish what to me felt like a real classic. That brute of a climb up to Bera’s would definitely have to make the toughest ascents chart for me. Will be back, though hopefully not on such a warm day next time.

Welsh 1000mtrs peaks race
Any news on this years course yet, with Glyder's new status. It's in the Wfra calender for 2011.
Is there a map for the current route anywhere??
Many thanks. :-)
Re: Welsh 1000mtrs peaks race
No news of the new route yet but it promises to be a much better race if it follows a mountaineering line between the Carneddau and the Glyderau.

Re: Welsh 1000mtrs peaks race
Round Tryfan today, cold as cold. Message from organisers, route not decided as yet given new 'hill'.
Take care
Re: Welsh 1000mtrs peaks race
Has anyone heard anything re: new route for this one? Would the route down to Ogwen still go via Llugwy?
