Re: Grin n Bear it. My first t
I didn't have a sore hip but first couple of miles lower back gyping me then o.k. So the RRR if i understand right has better terrain { and by better i mean less demanding not necessarily more interesting} on the whole except for fields and it has substantially less elevation but best to bring own food favourites. Thanks for your help.
Re: Grin n Bear it. My first t
5 times in the bogs sounds unlucky, only knee deep sounds lucky :D. It was about as dry it gets up there today, most races avoid such boggy ground however. The wind was exceptional; it's a while since I was out in wind so strong. For a fell run, I'd say the course was nicely runnable all the way, nothing steep or particularly difficult underfoot. There are definitely a lot of easier races though.
Rotherham the past 2 years has been cold and wet, particularly last year when I don't think it stopped raining all day. Going underfoot was worse than Grin and Bear It last year, very wet and muddy. No knee deep stuff, but ankle deep mud all day takes it's toll. Even if it rains for the next fortnight I can't see it getting anywhere near as bad again.
There's nothing as steep or long on Rotherham, and nowhere is anywhere near as exposed as today. If it's not muddy it will be a lot easier running ground, so there's less excuse for walking breaks.
Re: Grin n Bear it. My first t
I think todays wind was exceptional but the ground conditions for this race were good to firm.
most 15 milers are probably a bit easier.
Best bit for me today was walking down to Bull clough (bog monster country) i saw a walker go in deep. I watched him for a minute but he was really struggling to get out so I jogged over and offered him my hand which much to my intense pleasure and surprise was attached to my 'Best Man' I've not seen him for a few months.
It put a 'bigger smile' on my face.

[QUOTE=Derby Tup;259660]tri-mind, are you the lad with the sore hip? Said it was your first fell race? If so, blooming well done!
Hi, that was Ben, he was with me, ( a pair of fell race debutants) we are going to enter Tanky's next. The wind can't be that bad the first sunday in december, can it?

Hello Rodders. I'm the bald-headed fella with a goatee you met early on and near the end when Ben was struggling. Welcome to the forum. Hope you had fun today.
Anything can happen at Tanky's - last year was amazing frozen ground and snow but I'm told it was sightly damp the year before ;) I'm doing it this year again; hope to see you there

I have done the Route many times. Black Hill & Bleaklow are my stomping grounds. Is the route for Tanky's the same as last year?

Is this a typical day on the fells ?. Was that the usual amount of wind ?. Was i stupid going knee deep in peat 5 times ?. And finally did i choose an easy or difficult one to begin with and would you say this is good practice for the Rowbothams Round Rotherham i am doing in 2 weeks ?. What a day fabulous.
The Grin n Bear It was also my first fell race about 4 years ago and it was very wet. My friend fell in a bog up to her waist and had to be pulled out by several passers by. I keep meaning to run this race again but something else always seems to crop up, I just want to know if it's as difficult as I remember. Fell races can vary dramatically from one year to the next depending on wind, rain, heat etc. Take Edale for example, I ran it in lovely warm spring weather this year but 2 years previous there was an horrendous bizzard which left some people with hypothermia and lots of people had to pack in. I think if you've done the Grin n Bear It in poor conditions, you can manage pretty much anything. Well done on choosing such a tough race to start with.
Re: Grin 'n' Bear it 2009
Had a good run out round the long route yesterday.
I struggled at times to get in to a rhythm due to the constant buffeting from the wind, especially on the more exposed areas going up Mickelden edge, Cut gate and across Outer edge & Howden edge. Thankfully I avoided the bog monster.
A good well organised event, a shame the weather let it down.
Good to see some other formites there, Jodg, IDP- marshalling on outer edge, SteveS – didn’t get chance to talk to you, you were off like a man on a mission. Derby Tup – Jodg pointed you out to me as we entered the car park but I didn’t get chance to talk to you either. Maybe next time
