Is the relay this sunday or next?
I hope you are joking with that post Turbo.
Forecast for next week looks crackin, maybe a touch cold but thats all.
If its right I reckon a few records could go again :w00t:
Wouldn't like to pick a winner looking at the start list though...........
Good job its not today, too much hard ice about, would have been decidedly dodgy !
The leg records will take some beating, leg 2 set by two luminaries from Bingley has stood for a while and the overall record set by Horwich has stood the test of time.
I've found this great little website, should be a big help for you mate;
TURBO TOM'S LITTLE HELPER
Enjoy!! :w00t:
Nice little trot over leg 3 today, bit frosty in places but other otherwise great under foot, anyone else been out on the course today ???
Forecast looks like a sprinkling of snow could be on the course which is good i guess

Leg 5 dangerous today, lots of hard ice ,reports of parts of leg 2 being the same. Met up with some lads from Tod who agreed and a group from Clayton having to walk a section. Had the race been today it wouldn't have been on. Fingers crossed for some mild weather this week.
Hi Lefty
weather forecast is for it to be very cold midweek, but hopefully thaw a bit by weekend, so fingers crossed...
btw what is the exact situation wrt parking near Callis Bridge - you said you had secured some parking - will this be enough for all teams? if not, where will any overflow be directed to park instead? have you abandoned the idea of a shuttle minibus to/from Hebden Bridge?
Daz
Ran leg 4 on Sat morning ..very tricky in places ..the first section where you go between the 2 walls was unrunnable being like a ice rink..left my car half way up calderdale road as it was getting too dodgy...it was a beautiful day though once out on the route.
Hard frost forecast this week down to -8!

I understand there is to be an inspection of the route on Saturday morning and decision made as to the race going ahead or not.
No the forecast reads well, the sunlight during the day should do the trick as there is no rain due there should be little if any water/ice running off the hills, i imagine it might have a chance of being very dry but very cold, hopefully the snow holds off till after the race finishes.

Above is the weather forecast for end of leg3 start of leg4
Fingers crossed indeed. I've not done the PBW before - I've been right looking forward to it.

We have now secured parking at Callis Bridge ( at a cost ) at the old Menzolit site just down the road so it should be ok providing we don't get too spectators going there.
As of Monday pm the route is unsafe for the race to go ahead, lots of hard water ice despite the afternoon sun. Going to go out for a run on part of the route this afternoon to check it out again. Snow is mostly ok it's the ice which is frightening !
I emailed out all of the club contacts last night to advise them that we will make an inspection on sections of the route early on Saturday morning and will email them all our findings at 10.00 am. I will also post details on the event website and here on this forum. Whatever the outcome I hope that everyone understands our obligations as organisers with regard to safety. We have already had 2 broken legs on this race in the past which has been personally upsetting. If anyone has up to date reports on the route condition please contact me at [email protected]
You're race your call, i am sure what ever you decide is right--- those broken bits are very annoying, fingers crossed though
Skips off to look for plan b
I think we all understand and I would hate a casualty such as that as a RO, but I think you should be very pleased with you record. The conditions at that time of year can be severe and to have 2 serious accidents from the 1,000s of competitors you have had probably stacks up very well compared to some road races.
There was a lady in a serious accident around 2005 in the 12 stage at Heaton Park and I think she suffered a broken leg.
So whatever you decide you will have the sports support I'm sure.
Graham,
Couple of us have just done Leg 5 and it is a shocker on the top of the moor and even the path from the golf club down to the gate isn't good but that has a chance of clearing, not so sure about the top though it was pretty thick and not at all runnable.
Fingers crossed though, if you need any help checking sections on saturday i am happy to jog out on the course. just pm me.

Leg 5 Weds 1st Feb 3.00pm 3.5 miles of uninterupted hard water ice
Just had a look at the photo now... eeesh.
You are obviously keeping an eye on things though and it is good to know when the final check will be made. Thanks in advance and I am sure you will recieve support in whatever decision is made.
here's a look forward to the event - here's hoping the ice will clear and it'll go ahead.............

Blimey. OK, maybe I won't be going mountain biking on the moors at the weekend. Not in a club that does this event, but it looks great and keeping fingers crossed for everyone that the warmer air comes in a bit quicker.
So, just like Bingley have in the Fell running briefs article above then, WP?
Good news BBC weather shows rising temperatures this weekend - above freezing Saturday and 4-5' on Sunday. http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/hx7
.
As you might expect I have been keeping an eye on the weather forecast, the forecasts which I have seen which are usually pretty accurate for this area differ from the one posted by Trig above. For Rawtenstall for Friday overnight into Saturday morning a low of -5 warming up to -1 by noon on Saturday with snow from 15.00 for a few hours. I have just got back from inspecting parts of the route again and as you might expect there is no change from yesterday with lots of hard water ice still covering some sections.
I have already advised everyone that we will let them know whether the event is to go ahead or not by 10.00 am on Saturday morning although for some people ( caterers, Sportident, The Mountain Rescue Team etc) this will be too late and so I am seriously considering making the decision after another route inspection tomorrow afternoon. I cannot see that there is going to be any change in the state of the route between Friday night and Saturday morning and it will give everyone a bit more time to sort everthing out. Photo taken today at 3.00pm.

Cheers for the further update Lefty - you've got a bugger of a job to sort out there, & I cant help feeling that whatever decision you make, you're going to get moaned at; it's either "decision made too late, I could have organised something else this weekend", or "why decide Friday? it's two days before the race" or "why not just run it anyhow & let people take responsibility"....... and I'm sure there's more.
The bottom line is, the first two are subjective arguments that you won't win, the third unfortunately is something that's beyond race organisers nowadays, you can't just just "let people take responsibility" anymore (much as I personally am happy to); should anything happen (& in the pics shown in race conditions, it could well do!), then you're in the poo, big time.
For the first time ever we have enough members to field a ladies team in addition to two others which we were looking forward to, but I'd much rather we had 30 runners with no race than some broken bones!
Tough Call - Good Luck! :w00t:
I reckon Todmorden is in the centre of the route, here is Saturday's forecast:
http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?a...sess=#forecast
Recce of leg 1 today - very very very icy underfoot but a lovely day for a run :-)
Snow forcast for Calderdale area, and with a minus 7 for tonight I fear the worst.
If it's not safe for ALL runners then lets do the sensible thing.
I back Lefty 100% as the race organiser it's his and his teams call.
Mrs Stagger was on the route on Monday and said it was dangerous then and its been much colder since.
As some-one who ended up in A&E two years ago with a split chin after catching the ice on leg 5, while i want and hope the event goes ahead (we to have a ladies team in for the first time) its the ROs call and what ever call he makes is the right one
Sarah
I think it's a good call to cancel judging by the above photo. I know fell runners can be funny about cancelled races, but that is some serious ice and in race conditions could prove deadly. I doubt anyone would hold it against you for cancelling under the circumstances. A mixture of ice and snow is one thing, but sheet ice over a large area is a different beast altogether.
100% agree (not that my club is entered, but I wouldn't be annoyed if we were)
It looks like the thaw will only start Sunday and that will have nil effect on the ground up there perhaps until Monday / Tuesday.
If we get the snowfall predicted Saturday night it could be worse than now ie. Ice that you cannot see as there's a nice fresh layer of snow on it. Personally I'd rather race with it as it is now without the snow cover, but that's me.
I also have 4 x U20s and 1 x U17 and although I'm happy to risk a fall, I don't want to risk them, so if you make the call to cancel early, you will have my full support and that of the BBH athletes - as well as our sympathy as we fully understand how frustrating it is having lost the 2010 RV10K.
This is one of my favorite races of the year, but having seen the photos and also talking club mates who have been on leg 5 today, I fully support the cancellation if that happens. Whilst the route is probably runnable, there is a big difference between an Sunday morning run where you will happily mince around the bad bits and a race.
Full support from our club (Pudsey Pacers) for whatever decision you make, Lefty.
