Re: stuarts snowdon record goi
i dont think i`ll be up for this,i`ve been off sick with fluy symptoms.so i dont think i`ll have recovered in time for the race(gutted).
which shoes:TBH i think i would opt for road shoes for this one or light weight trail shoes.i`ve worn fell shoes once ,and not a good idea, although it is a mountain ,the ground is very hard and more representative of a trail/track

Looking like the weather's changing just in time for a hot jogging of Snowdon, looks like it'll be another topless day out!....anyone know if there's any rules on wearing a vest or not?

Rule 13: You MUST show your race number clearly on your vest, tshirt, NO cutting off the sponsors, NO placing the number on your short. MUST be on the front of your vest. Any runner seen breaking this rule they will be disqualified.
Looking at photos on the website, some runners ignore this rule and pin their number on their shorts so they can go topless. Personally, I'd obey the organiser's instructions.
Also looking at the photos, it's clear that most people wear road shoes. I think I need the lower profile of a fell shoe, not for grip, but to reduce the chances of going over on my ankles on the stones. Any thoughts on this?

I have no choice, Roclite 295's are all I have! Fingers crossed they'll be OK......

Re: stuarts snowdon record goi
I'm baffled a bit about shoe choice to be honest. I'm just confused!!
Any other race I would of turned up in either Inov-8 mudclaws or the x talons and got on with it.
I did Cader in the Mudclaws, up and down thats 4 mile road, 2 mile forest trail and 5 mile Snowdon Replica mountain path of rocks (much worse than snowdon at the summit) and wet slab type steps, like Allt Moses.
I've done a few recee's of Snowdon now in New Balance trail shoes, Addidas Kanadia tr3 trail shoes and Inov-8 x talon 212 fell shoes. The NB's I used in bone dry conditions and were fine. The Inov-8s I used in half & half conditions, (dry going up and wet on the descent) nice and unbelievably light on the way up, and stuck like glue on the wet rock on the descent.
The addidas's were ok'ish but it was absolutely hammering it down, the path was like running up a river which made the shoes like sponges, they were really heavy.
The way I feel to be honest, it's a mountain/fell race so fell shoes it is. Going off the recee's the x-talons get my vote.
I think if the weather had of been like previous weeks, bone dry then road shoes would of been fine.

Don't worry about it. People will have great runs wearing them all. I'll probably stick with walshes unless it's bone dry. Plenty more things to worry about on the day...

my thoughts exactly
I'd always err on the side of caution and go with a low-profile shoe, even on fairly tame trails, let alone Snowdon

I certainly wouldn't feel safe in them and I'm a pretty decent descender who rarely goes over on the ankles.
I've only ever done one road race, never train on the roads, and never wear road shoes in training, yet this year I've worn road shoes for two fell races! Both were proper fell races but had short sections of downhill road and fast stony tracks where road shoes were much better than narrow studded shoes, were in dry conditions, and there were no steep technical descents.
A runner who used to be very fast told me he used to wear road shoes on Lakeland races where there was lots of wet rock as you got a better grip as you want to maximise contact surface area, so I guess that probably applies on the slate paths on Snowdon. At the least you can't get any worse grip on wet slate than the zero grip you get with studs!

Here's a thought - can you have too much grip? If you're going full pelt down a mountain you don't want your shoes sticking to the rock!
There's not that much slate on Snowdon itself! Particularly on the higher slopes it's mostly gnarly stuff of volcanic origin. The new lumps of stone on the path aren't slate either and especially below Clogwyn they're not at a very good pitch for descending at speed! Not that I made it that far last year!
Having retired from competing in Ras yr Wyddfa I've found a nice low key race on Saturday from a village show in Cheshire.

List of International runners for Saturday including Wilson Chepweno plus a Moroccan runner Khalid Ingrioui.
Seeing as this is in the road running section of the Welsh Athletics website rather than the mountain running section, you'd better all wear road shoes!

Re: stuarts snowdon record goi
What makes the railway track a better descent than the tourist path? Is it just because there's fewer people or is it better running?
Cheers

The most crowded part of Snowdon is near the top - people get off the train with their full kit from Karrimor, etc and wander up and down a bit thinking that they're true mountaineers. Particularly on that shortish but steep and twisty final climb there are usually folk who are very unsteady on their feet (no not the runners!) who stand in the middle of the path looking at you as you come towards them. At the last minute they usually start to hurl themselves to one side but then have second thoughts and stay rooted to the spot. Of course you also have agitated runners going up and down and there's no way you can make the same progress that you can on the track which is usually deserted and you can pick things up a bit.

Rocksteady - gutted - hope you recover m8
Yep all of this...plus wonder if they've cleaned the Guinness Pipes in the Vic...will the pasta meal be soggy..
Its interesting to see the discussion on the shoes...Ive always ran with my Solomon Speed Cross2's on Snowdon..they have the required grip...some might say too grippy...but I feel comfortable in them and thats the important thing for me...Ive ran the road section with the Mudclaw's and had a horrible run (remember this is 2 miles of the race).
I'll ask the organisers later about the vests/number and post back..
look forward to the race now :-) Lets hope the weather dosnt spoil it.

Re: stuarts snowdon record goi
Tried my New shoes in the rain last night, I don't think I will be wearing them if it rains!!
DylWales, I have a pair of Solomon Speed Cross 2, I used them on a run up and down Snowdon about 6 weeks ago but felt they were a bit on the wobbly side, ankle gave way a couple of times on the way down but I suppose they will have a better grip than my New Balance in the rain.

I agree with you - the Solomons do have a high heel - hence why the tendancy sometimes for runners to go over on the ankles...and it happened to me on the Anniversary Waltz...but that was my fault for not looking at where i was going!
Should be interesting to see what the other runners are running - maybe we should have pit stop's along the route for shoe changes!!!! :-)
now thats an idea...

Re: stuarts snowdon record goi
Used speed x 2s last year and went over me ankle a couple of times. Ok on the day but did something bad and did more damage a few weeks after. I don't use them any more Size 8 if you want them Dylan ;-) I just do everything in my mudclaws now but I know what you mean about the road section.
I'm looking forward to it now too...

Thanks John - but im a small fella with big feet...9.5 :-)
im getting paranoid about falling over my ankle now :-)
ive ran for the past 18months with the SC2 and only gone over once and that was my own stupid fault..so it's like anything - (going back to the original question) - go with whats best for you...the facts are there....road/tarmac for 2 miles then 8 miles of fun on rocky surface - some "new" slippy smooth rock on "Allt Moses"...again will check - but there's actually some grass section (off Allt Moses) that most runners use on the way down...but will check if this is still allowed this year..
I think the Grand Prix idea is best - we can then slow down the front runners who made bad "fell shoes" decisions!!
Some people swear by Inov8 XXX other's by Inov8 XXXXX and other Solomon XXX - its what's best for you.
* Please note:- i dont have any sponsorship deals with Solomon * :-)

S4/C is doing an hour long programme about this year's race at 8.00pm on Sunday. For those of us who don't live in Wales, I'm hoping they'll have it on their 'clic' service (which is like iPlayer) at:
http://tywydd.s4c.co.uk/clic/e_index.shtml
The trailer for the programme is at:

Re: stuarts snowdon record goi
Good luck to eveybody doing this race, I did it back in the 80s and managed 1.17 in what I considered one of my best races so still 14 mins off Kenny's pace who's record I don't think will be beaten, it's a bit like John Wildes' Wrekin record.......almost unbelievable and set over 20 years ago. I'm not running tomorrow but I'm going to camp tonight in Llanberis and have a jog up Snowdon tomorrow morning with my dog and then watch the race. what time does the race start?

Agree Joe, I've often trained over wet lakeland rock in Nike Air Pegasus' and found them great for the same reasons as you say. But then they're no good on steep wet grass, you need the studs there! Yes Snowdon is generally gradual with very little grass but it's the lack of stability of a road show that'd bother me. Everyone's different.

There's also one, maybe 2 steep grass sections depending on line, if it's wet I'll deffo go walshes..

I mean swapping a racing fell shoe for a racing road shoe, not for a cushioned road or trail shoe. I'd never wear Nike Air Pegasus on a race. In fact I never wear shoes that built up anymore - I think I'd get vertigo! The ones I use are an old pair of Nike Zoom - no problem with stability there.

Best of luck everyone - I had hoped to have been photographing the race later today but sadly my mum is very poorly, so at the minute it looks like I will have to miss the race. I know plenty of other people will be out on the course taking pics so plenty of smiles folks no matter how hard or wet it may be.
One other note S4C usually run the race highlights 5-6 times throughout the following week starting Sunday evening plus it can be viewed via the website.
