Well tomorrows race passed today and it went pretty well infact. If some young whipper snapper (Neil Northrop):) hadn't been there to beat me I would have done quite nicely.
50 minutes hard racing shins took a pounding through the Bilberry and later the brambles but hey it's just part of the game.

After 3 days of racing Tuesday WILL be a rest day.
From Wessenden Head up to Soldiers Lump & back. Best time yet. a tad under 4 miles, 920 feet gained & lost in 38:28. A nice loosener after the CVR on Sat.
First AL training run of the year.
A bit of a swindle it was really because I got lost and had to do a 5km loop to get back to where I was.
In the end it worked reasonably OK. The halfway pub I was aiming for was closed and the next one was 300mtrs higher up a stony track leading up the hill. When I arrived a bus was disgorging dozens of teenage girls with wheely-suitcases. But nevertheless I got served. A beef soup and a beer.
The pub clock said 4.4 but then I saw that all the numbers on the clock were 4. "When it's 4 it's time for a beer" was written on a plaque above my table. In reality it was about 6.20pm but since I hardly ever wear a watch I can't be too sure.
I still had about 15kms left to go, so after my repast I switched on Queen's Greatest Hits and jogged merrily away, thinking "this could be heaven for everyone" and maybe this long distance running ain't so bad after all.
Not much idea how far. I got well and truly confused in a housing estate maze trying to regain the trail and ran round the little boxes all the same labyrinth about 3 times before a friendly bloke in a garden pointed me to a gap in a hedge and beyond that there it was - my beloved Vienna Woods.
After that it was pretty well plain sailing. Somewhere between 30-35kms and 800-1,000mtrs +/- all told, I'd guess.
No, I don't have a 'gps' gadget either. My brother's SatNav took his camper van onto Morrison's Car Park when he wanted to go over the Runcorn-Widnes Bridge. That's a lesson to us all. In fact, I don't even have a heart-rate monitor. Fact is, it's small wonder I can run at all when I think of all the essential bits and pieces I don't have.
Seriously though, I should have had a map, since the original idea was to recce some of the Trans-Europe Path no.4, but if a map, then reading glasses, and if glasses then paper and pen etc. and well, what about a telephone, and so it goes on. And before you set off you're unscrewing the kitchen sink.
Two things are essential: a pair of shoes suitable for the terrain. For the Vienna Woods, if leaving the main trails, or it's a bit muddy or wet, I use Saucony Shadow 9. The other thing is some cash. As in the Lakes and other places, a moment's loss of concentration can easily find you in the wrong valley.
7ish miles mainly off-road from home... canal, wood and field, a few ups and downs and a nice sunny evening. 51 mins.
The long way round to get the newspaper in Hampsthwaite, by gum. 55 mins, a short 7 miles and only about 350' ascent. Quads still sore from the descents at PPP. Note to self: must do more hillwork (and speedwork, maybe a few longer runs, too)
struggled at BMF last night
by heck some of those lads are fit
dunno if I've dropped back or if they've got fitter ....
Just been dragged out by the missus and a gang from the College for another 4.5 miles with 350' ascent. Warm and humid.
About 5ml / 600ft with K&C followed by chilli, garlic bread and Ram Tam. Nice way to celebrate Brett's birthday D:
SYRL 5 mile, 29.02
Doubt if it could have been much flatter if we were running on a frozen lake:( far too flat and fast for my liking but I guess it will help build the speed.
Respect to Andi and his ilk who can keep that pace up for 26+miles
2 x 10km runs on my 2 days off werk (10km is "long-ish" for me, so 2 days in a row I am pleased with  ). Roughly 0ft though I am afraid!
Back in werk now for 2x12 hour shifts + 7 hours-ish travelling so no running til the weekend :(
Sonnenberg (Sun Mountain!) tops out at a mere 484mtrs. It's in the Leitha Hills, near the Austro-Hungarian border. Midday I ran to the radio mast on the top and then back down to the start point at 182mtrs. Up in 40 mins. Down in 30.
The Beatles were rock and rolling over Beethoven on the mp3 (must get some Chuck Berry to put on) and the sun was smiling happily on the Sun Mountain trail.
12kms
hd +/- 300mtrs
70 mins
5mile on road in Southampton this morning with Stef F. Lovely sunny morning for a run out
Gentle 32 mins flat round a reservoir yesterday morning followed by 4.9 mile hilly road race in Ilkley last night. Steady recovery run today for 40 mins and 23 mile Malhamdale Meander tomorrow.
Think I'm going to insert some flat speedwork in May, as I'm in danger of training myself to run slowly.
No, though I'm Yorkshire born and bred and used to do cycle touring round these parts in the early 70s, I've been away for decades (apart from 18 months in Catterick in 87-88 and 2 years at Topcliffe 91-92, still got my Ripon Runners vest upstairs). Now at Harrogate for 2 years, I hope, so I'm cramming as much in as I can before moving on.
I've joined the Harrogate club, the FRA, LDWA and YHA to assist in the task.
hill reps:
walk 80mtrs hd+ up almost vertical hill
jog down 15-bend serpentine to bottom of hill
and do it again...and again...etc.
(actually 8 reps it was and then I was basically f*****)
First run for 9 days so drove out of the city up to Washburn valley for a lap around Fewston reservoir - didn't want anything hilly but Hamstring fine on that 34 mins.
10 mile on the tredders
On the plus side it didn't hurt one bit :D
Funny, I was there yesterday.
No, Mister Bond, I expect you to die. (I'm afraid I can't explain, but it does have relevance.)
23 miles and roughly 2500' ascent on the Malhamdale Meander (LDWA event), 3 hours 52 mins.
Did the calder valley round X 2 in prep for a new Ultra circular route I'm putting together in the peak next sat. 30 miles & 9328 feet in 7:16.
ennerdale horse shoe, bit dead now !
Tuesday - fast 9 miles
Wednesday - Steady 5.5 miles
Friday - Threshold four miles plus hill sprint session
Saturday - Solid 18 miles
However, major ankle crunch around mile 13 of Saturday's jaunt, meaning Sunday and today have been enforced rest days if I have any hope of making Tiger's Todger on Wednesday. Very sore
Did the Coiners Fell race (7 miles, 1100') at Mytholmroyd as a loosener after 23 miles on Sat around Malham. Pleasant course, some hail, a bit of almost swimming.
rest today (and work for tomorrow)
2 days of orienteering and after fast racing in the relays on Sun I have caused a recurrent injury to flare up - need to be right by weekend for Fellsman. Tomorrow is meant to be club handicap, may have to bail out or just go slow (so no change there some would say!)
4mi run on road/field/golf course. 30mins. Touch wood, knee's alright.
undulating 10km on trails through Cuerden Valley Park near Leyland each day over the bank hol weekend while at my mum's
BMF tonight ...
How was Malham BL ? I entered, but decided to run with my son at Ilkley Harriers instead ! A top 10 finish I trust ?
Very pleasant day out. I think I was the fastest round in 3:52 with another lad from Liverpool, but there were the usual LDWA eccentricities. Some runners started with the walkers at 0830, a couple set off at 0840 and the rest of us at 0900. Nobody came past us and I think we did a faster time than the rest.
A couple of the grids were a tad out ('that's where the check point used to be, but not anymore) and a couple of checkpoints were just waypoints, so we spent a wee while searching for something that didn't exist, but that's all part of the fun. Just sending the cheque off for the Settle Saunter for another 24 mile training run. Just need to carry the form over into proper races. Seems the 3 Peaks was simply a bad day for me, I think I made the elementary mistake of running somebody else's race and not my own and paid too much attention to the cut-off times.
No training today. Rest day and 6 hour brew day (5 gallons of best bitter, Maris Otter malt with Challenger hops).
Mmmm, I'm seeing a worrying parallel between your slow 3 Peaks time & beer intake. 5 gallons the night before a race is not good preperation !
Are you doing the Wharfedale Marathon ?
You're confusing brewing with drinking. Simple rule of thumb that's served me well these last 30 odd years' of running: No more than half a gallon before a race and no more than a gallon after one. Mark my words well!
Took me a while to work that one out, though.
