can't see how you can change your forum name but i did change my avatar as you can see.a reminder of when villa joined that elite group of four english teams to have reached the pinacle of club football and became champions of europe.a time when you actually had to be champions of your own league just to be in it.
Let's have a look at the mighty European Champions that you beat on your run to the cup:
Valur (who?)
Dynamo Berlin (on away goals)
Dynamo Kiev
Anderlecht
Bayern Munich
IMO, the current format is harder to win. Look at the knockout stages from when Liverpool won it in 2005:
Bayer Leverkusen
Juventus
Chelsea
Milan
Only one less knockout round as well. Don't get me wrong; what you and Forest did was a great achievement but let's not pretend it was harder to win then just because you had to win your domestic league to be in it.
Re: Tonight's football thread
It's all been happening tonight.....Rochdale trying their best not to get promoted......Runcorn and Ramsbottom dugouts scrapping with each other, and Rainworth v Scarborough abandoned after the floodlights caught fire.......who says only the premier league provides excitement !
ps....you didn't have to be champions of your domestic league to be in the old European cup.......malmo lost to Forest in 78 or whenever, when at the time they had never been Swedish champions. They entered the European cup because they were leading their league half way thru their season (odd rules reigned at the time)

2 goals in injury time. Absolute carnage!

Re: Tonight's football thread
Just seen the gate for the Halifax v Lancaster game at the weekend 3,152. Not bad for Unibond Division 1 North

We'll do our best, we need to win to hopefully pull away from the teams below. Thank God we retained the 8 point lead over Southampton. Jeez I wouldn't want to play them in the playoffs

do you hoestly think you have made a point here. firstly villa won a league which had the winners of the previous four years european champions in it and then they beat bayern munich in the final who prior to the four previous years of domination of the english clubs had won the cup three years on the trot. under the same conditions liverpool would not even have been in the competition because they could not win their own league. plus liverpool were also in the cup the year villa won as defending champions.just because you have to play a few lesser teams in a mini league prior to the knock out stages doesn't make the trophy harder to win than having to win a season long division prior to the knock out stages of the cup
