Filling in my entry for Wasdale with the intention of treating it as a training run for the CCC in August. The toughest fell race I've done is Borrowdale. Wondering how this compares in terms of difficulty... obviously more ascent/descent and distance.
Hi John,
I'm planning on doing it again mate but likewise more as a training run effort (or just getting round without bonking this time, lol)
I can't compare it to Borrowdale as I haven't done it. But it's a proper monster in terms of the climbing. If you over cook things early on before Pillar you can really come unstuck from the climb up Gable to the finish. I had a particularly bad day at the office but this really is a proper test. Navigation wise the section from Seatallan to Pillar in the clag could be a nightmare I imagine too. Weather was ok last year.
Looking back I definitely hadn't done enough long runs on the fells mind. Big big difference between feeling strong over 10-12m on the fells and 21, lol
Start off sensibly and get some fuel in following plenty of long training runs and you'd be ok for it. Will tell you more about it when I next see you or can drop you an email.
I've also got my eye on Wasdale, went to watch parts of it last year and really wet my appetite for it. Never done any of the Lakeland Classics, the hardest ones I've done are Edale Skyline and 3 Peaks, as well as some tough mid-distance races like Winter Hill, Blakey Blitz and Heptonstall.
I think I might be out my depth a little, but I know the area having walked most or part of the course in the past, so I know what I'm letting myself in for. Just really fancy having a crack at it as I turned 50 this year and wanted to do some challenging event that I'd never done before and would definatley take me out my comfort zone.
Just get up there, recce it a couple of times and you will be alright. I did it as my first long fell race, approx double distance/climb of my previous longest Helvelyyn. I knocked 45 minutes off last year and hope to knock some more off some time, but not this year.
Dan
Ps enjoy it it's an amazing day out
Wasdale is much tougher than Borrowdale, very little is runnable even the descents.
The race starts at Pillar!
I found it more difficult - dropping back down to Wast Water in the first third is quite tough pyschologically, there's more chances to make nav errors in clag, and as you say a bit more distance, a lot more climbing and also rockier. It's not to be under estimated, but it's a gem of a race... you'll love it!
2 weeks to go to my first Wasdale, nervous just thinking about it. Think I'm gonna be out my depth to be honest but cant wait to have a crack at it, just hope next weeks heatwave has passed by then. Apart from the drinks handed out at Greendale is their much chance of water along the route after a dry spell.
Stream just after Black Sail pass. Stream running up from Styhead towards Esk Hause is near the path.
Joss Naylor and friends hand out drinks of squash at Greendale. There's water on the climb up towards Seatallan and from memory there was one point between Seatallan and Pillar. You can then grab water on the path that skirts round behind Kirk fell and on the path up towards Esk Hause. Decent amount of water basically.
Gargantuan route. Just have a trott out/training run up until Pillar and crucially go very easy down the first extremely steep descent back into the valley. Pushing a little too hard too soon can mean things quickly unravel later turning it into a complete suffer fest or worst (speaking from expericence,,lol). Start off nice and easy and see how you feel at Pillar and go from there. Amazing route and an epic day, you'll have an amazing time. Not fit enough currently to run it this year sadly. Next year.
Thanks FellRunner09, much appreciated. Yeah really looking forward to it. I had entered last years race but never made the start line due to injury, but still made the journey up to the Lakes to watch sections of the race, made me more determined to have a go this year.
Trainings gone pretty good, but seen as their are no mountains in Hull(in fact its as flat as a pancake)I do struggle to get decent training in, I manage to get out onto the Wolds and Yorkshire Dales now and then to get some climbing in, its not ideal but better than nowt.
As long as I get round in one piece and inside the cut-offs then I'll be happy, but I think I'll be taking youre advice taking it very steady first half, then just see how I feel second half, fingers crossed.
Hi All,
We are currently short of a couple of marshalls for the wasdale race, specifically for the pillar check point.
If anyone is willing to marshal (not necessarily on pillar - I can shuffle people aroud a bit) can you please send me an email - [email protected]
Thanks...

Have you found anyone Will?
I'm supposed to be running it but if lack of marshals means no race then I'll marshal instead. FOR THE GREATER GOOD OF ALL MANKIND!
I'm marshalling, dunno if it's for the greater good of all mankind though. Same spot as last year so watch yerselves over the rickety stile, when you least need it.
Whose having a bimble ? Good luck one & all, easy does it early doors.
I was planning compass at the ready, looking at this...... http://www.mwis.org.uk/english-welsh-forecast/LD/
I can imagine the section from Seatallan to Pillar being a nightmare in the clag
Very prescient. Was a great day out but loads of runners lost in the clag trying to find wind gap. A case of the blind leading the blind I think....
Just a quick note to say a massive thank you to everyone who helped out yesterday, especially the marshals / sweepers who had quite a bit of mankey weather to put up with.
Also thanks to the competitors for all turning up mostly in one piece at the finish & telling us if you had retired.
I have heard a few comments about differing routes, so far including visits to red pike, pillar (twice), esk pike & kirk fell... Anyone want to claim these?
Also, whoever was navigating using a gps / phone, you really shouldn't rely on that. Mostly because the marshals on pillar have been taking the piss since you went through. But also partly because if your gadget breaks or its batteries go flat you will be lost forever.
Results will be online by Tuesday hopefully after I've had chance to sort them.
What an epic day out on the fells it was yesterday.
My first Wasdale and to be honest I found it unbelievably tough,a bit out of my league to be honest, but managed to soldier on to the finish, battered and bruised. High points were the great grassy run across the top of the screes to Whin Rigg, the gentle run through Greendale, seeing Joss Naylor and friends at Greendale Bridge, finally summitting Pillar after the long drag from Seatallan, eventually reaching Scaffell Pike summit and knowing its all down hill from there, oh what a relief, and getting to the final checkpoint having a bit of a laugh with the marshals and photographer and been able to see the finish tent not too far away, oh the joy!
Low point for me was the tough slog up Gable, that totally bolloxed me, and couldve done without the low cloud, but overall a totally fantastic race, oh and the jelly legs coming down Lingmell, felt like they were buckling.
To take part in and complete this classic lakeland fell race is definatley up there with my greatest achievements, but with better preparation I know I can come back next year and give it a better go, I hope, well thats my plan anyway.
Good to see the smiling marshals on checkpoints, and really enjoyed the scran at the finish, and enjoyed a bit of banter with the ladies in the sarnie tent. I'm so pleased I managed to finish and not miss the cut-offs, after travelling 4hrs from Hull to be timed out would've really peeved me off.
Top day all round, cheers to everyone involved.
Good to read that Fozzy42.
Wasdale Fell Race (1972 onwards)
"This is the toughest fell race (run under AAA laws)".

Bill, as usual, was right.

It was my first Wasdale I had a brilliant time. I was one of the folks that started heading for Red Pike. I definitely found the descent off Whin Rigg tough but soon recovered and had an enjoyable race taking in the views as they appeared within the cloud.
Thanks to everyone involved for making the race happen. Can't wait to come back and have another go.
Also my first Wasdale. Huge thanks to all the organisers and marshalls (especially Yiannis at the stile, who radioed down to say we had finally turned up. Let's just say it was well part six/sevenish, by the time I finally came over that stile, having spent some time exploring the slopes of Lingmell in misty conditions!).
Amazing route. Found the slog up Seatallan long and a little dispiriting but by the time you get to Pillar it's hard not to enjoy yourself given you're amongst some of the best hills in Britain. Great Gable ascent was not quite as bad I thought it would be. Just need to think a bit about that route off Scafell Pike.
Overall, a super, well-organised race. Tougher than Jura I reckon.:)
Results are up on the CFRA website.
Anyone else at Wasdale on Saturday?
Looking nervously at the mwis forecast.
Felt that I learnt a lot at Buttermere two weeks ago, in regard to pacing and particularly mental toughness. Hoping for an improved showing but not expecting to set the world alight. If I can get closer to 6 hours than 7 I will consider it progress.
At the front end, forgive my amateur punditry, but a quick glance at the list and its hard to see past the couple of Borrowdale runners for the win, but appears they only have the two runners at the moment, so maybe a chance for Dark Peak to pick up another "super long"?
Will be interesting to see how this race compares against Buttermere for difficulty. Buttermere was quite simply the hardest race I've done, even in quite ideal conditions it was a step up from an agonisingly hot Welsh 1000 metres.
Pete
I think Buttermere is marginally harder but Wasdale took me a bit longer 5.38/5.55. A llot more rock around at Wasdale which could be bad in the wet, but conversely more vegetation at Buttermere.
Have fun wish I could do it but looking like next year for any AL action for me.
Dan
I'm planning to run on Saturday. Also hoping for sub 7 this time after getting around 5h20 two years ago. I got round Howtown a few weeks ago and I have lost a bit of weight from cycling since then. Still expecting a long day out on the fells! It is harder than Buttermere but there is plenty of water available. Remember the race does not start until Pillar.
Disappointed not to be doing Wasdale this coming Saturday, but lack of training through hamstring injury I'd never get round.
Still going up to the Lakes this weekend though to do a bit of walking in the Wasdale area so hoping to catch some of the race and maybe take a few photos.
Hope the weather turns out ok 'cos at the moment its looking a bit bleak, but I'd take that with a pinch of salt at the moment 'cos as we all know predicting Lakes weather is almost impossible, especially around the Scaffells area.
Me and a friend will be marshalling at Pillar so we'll see you there! Weather does look a bit interesting; even if it isn't chucking it down and the predicted high winds haven't moved in yet there could be thick clag.
Both Ricky Lightfoot and Jasmin Paris have run it for the past couple of years so they may still turn up.
Does anyone know if the Pete Bland van will be there on Saturday morning? I guess they'll be prioritising the Champs race in Sedbergh but you never know!
Pretty sure the schedule for the van is on their website or the FRA fixture book, and I'm pretty certain it's not at Wasdale tomorrow unfortunately...
BBC Weather is predicting heavy rain from 7am to 5pm. And the BBC is never wrong, as we all know.
