Hill, mate, Hill!!
The Railway Man - Not a barrel of laughs and I can't see it being a hit in Japan either. Highlite for me was a beautifully played understated performance by Nicole Kidman. She recognised she was a supporting player and didn't steal any scenes  Started watching 'Wuthering Heights' the 2011 version but stopped about half way through, all that rolling about in the mud is a long way from Merle Oberon and anyway I can get the full mud experience on a good winter fell race
I saw 'The Imitation Game' tonight and enjoyed it very much. I was just expecting the sameold on the story but they mixed a bit of humour in and kept just enough info on the machine in without confusing everyone. Benedict Cumberbatch was very good. A couple of hours slipped by
Tonight's home movie presentation is... well, see if you can guess from this bit of dialogue:
"He's dead?"
"Not any more!"
(clue: not a zombie movie)
Graham, any word on the Mike Leigh Turner project? I might be tempted out to see it
Excellent!
I heard one leaving couple complain that it was too long. Well it lasts 2 1/2 hours and that doesn't seem too long to me to cover decades of, shall we say, the greatest British painter?
Spall is just Spall. Fortunately Turner was probably as curmudgeonly as Spall acts.
It is an amusing film and not at all worthy or turgid.*****
Thanks. Turner, Leigh, Spall; what's not to like eh?
I was boring someone recently about Rothko bequeathing the nine Seagram works to the Tate due in part to their Turner collection. ‘This man Turner, he learnt a lot from me’
The sightseers. Darkest of black comedies but just horribly, hilariously close-to-the-bone funny, and very English humour. Some lovely shots of the Lakes as well.
Watched 'The Angry Silence' followed by 'I'm all right Jack' tonight. Probably the right order to view them, in retrospect, although 'I'm all right Jack' was released before 'The Angry Silence' even though it satirises it in effect. Peter Sellar's role as Fred Kite is brilliantly funny and satirises Bernard Lee's role in The Angry Silence. Two great British films of the era
Billy Bob was rather good in Fargo and I thought The Grand Budapest Hotel was ace.
Golden Globe winners below.

Just saying.
felly.
I've watched a lot of films lately and have been very happily surprised by Populaire,I loved The Lunchbox, liked revisiting Fargo, enjoyed the latest episode of The Hobbit and thought Interstellar was brilliant if you didn't think too hard about the science and concentrated on the philosophical part. I saw Frozen (against my will) and have to admit to enjoying it. I also watched La Grande Belleza which I really liked but could probably do to watch again as there was a lot to think about and I missed a few key things that I had to google afterwards! The Grand Budapest Hotel was just as good the second time around :)
I liked the first half of Grand Budapest but lost interest in the second half.
Foxcatcher - I couldn't see past Steve Carell's prosthetic nose to his acting and probably neither could he. Mark Ruffalo the standout actor again.
Boyhood - liked it but enjoyed The Imitation Game more.
I liked the TV series Fargo and I am looking forward to the next one.

Time Lapse (2014) - not nominated in Globes but I enjoyed it very much. Kind of a time travel movie with good story progression and a couple of twists I didn't see coming
I liked the first half of Grand Budapest but lost interest in the second half.
GHB reminded me of some Eisenstein, Bergman and Godard films I have seen.
I didn't enjoy them at the time but having seen them and confirmed my cinephile credentials I enjoy the pleasure of knowing I need never watch them again.
Pantani - Accidental death of a cyclist
Interesting.
Anyone have any Netflix recommendations? Apart from Conan the Barbarian which I assume is what Breezey is likely to recommend.
Teasing me shaunaneto?
Pantani etc I recommended on here as a film of merit when it was released to cinemas..
I have never seen and will die happily never having seen Conan... but if you would like to know which of Claude Chabrol's 54 films are magnificent, then I am your man.
Ah hah. I'll give flight a whirl.
Not sure how many of Chabrol's efforts are on there.
Yojimbo
Film4 in 10 minutes - set the vid!
Was a bit disappointed with the Pantani film. There was actually little about his descent into drugs, no interviews with fellow cyclists about that or his legacy, no huge effort to investigate who or why it all happened etc.
I enjoyed the Last Gladiator about the enforcers in ice hockey, and the Galapagos Affair, Satan Came to Eden, both on Netflix.
Watched 'Birdman' last night. I thought it was very good and Keaton and Norton were excellent in it. Norton tends to be a scene stealer and he gave Keaton a run for his money in a few scenes but Keaton didn't fight it much to his credit. With his 'Batman' history the role seemed to be tailor made for him and maybe the writers had him or someone similar in mind when they started this project. Definitely an "original film" that stands out from the rest
went to see Foxcatcher last night.
From it I have learnt 3 things:
1.) Wrestlers walk funny.
2.) Wrestlers don't talk much.
3.) Steve Carrell (plus some prosthetics) does very very creepy and unsettling very well.
Half way through series 2 of Breaking Bad on Netflix and really enjoying it so far.
'Interstellar' - A crazy mixed up film but I liked it. After about half an hour and nothing had happened that I expected to happen I guessed I would be in for a long film and it didn't disappoint in that respect. Christopher Nolan directed and I am a bit of a fan of his after watching 'Memento' many years back.
Watched Last Gladiator.
Interesting, worth watching.
THE AVENGERS this afternoon looked and sounded a bit familiar
Watched John Wick. If you like martial arts and action its a great movie. Reminded me of the Raid. Also check out Man of tai chi if you haven't seen it also has Keano Reeves in.
Channel 4 now
Ted - just about to start on Channel 4+1 - better that you might imagine if you've never seen it
Teds a great film, watching it now :-)
The Theory of Everything this evening, great film, that Eddie Redmayne bloke is V good definitely deserves an Oscar
on channel 4 yesterday morning there was 1 hour of adventure racing the first was a film of an adventure race which included 2 fell races in 1 race which was over Ireland called the killarney the next was over wales over the Brecon beacons itera expedition race both races looked fantastic
Halfway through the Pantani film on Netflix, great but sad, amazed at the size of Evgeny Berzin, I knew that LeMond put a bit of timber on when he retired so not so much of a shock but Berzin is unrecognisable, looks like these guys continued eating for two well into retirement...
this was worth the watch LAYER CAKE

Loved it, makes me want to go for a loooong walk
Frank.
Loved it loved it loved it. To the point where my wife has asked me to stop singing "kiss me kiss me kiss me Nefertiti" and "fiddly digits itchy britches".
Offbeat but very warm, with some laugh out loud moments. And some very touching stuff, not just the obvious stuff like his retreat from the festival, but the contrast between his ego and power within the group and yet the way he needs to reach for his certificate whenever confronted by an authority figure. It mixed the completely ridiculous with the subtle. It also took in a lot of themes, from psychiatric illness to group dynamics to the power of social media in creating a craze out of nothing, even by focussing on the wrong message.
