What, tougher than Wasdale or Ennerdale?

Is it me or does it not matter one jot? Why do we worry about categorising things like this?
All these races are different. Each one has it's own atmosphere and charm.
The three peaks does have a special feel about it though, as though it's more of an event than a race. Whether it's down to tradition, the course, the size of the event, the time of year or some combination of these.
It's certainly not down to the the fact that it's down in the book as a category A race, erroneously or otherwise. So, why worry about it?
Hasn't this whole thread been about people who took up fell running three weeks ago finding solutions to a problem that people who have been running the Three Peaks for 50 years did not know existed?
And actually doesn't.
... I have to take issue with you there :D. (Is this the right room for an argument?)
FYI
3 Peaks gear online:

Just posted a similar thread in "Equipment" but figured most of you would get the PPP race alert.
Got 2 tickets for sale if anyone is interested.
No not for a profit either ;)
*I'd never make it on the apprentice*
Let me know if your interested!
one gone, one left...roll up roll up!
Hiya swoop, just been stoooooopid busy at wuk and got a couple of IM races this year so fell running is off the agenda for the moment!
Hope your keeping well, are you doing the pike race, I've volunteered to stand and get cold
Went running up Whernside today, when the farmer at Bruntscar (bottom of the descent) stopped me for a chat. Apparently a lot of runners are cutting the corner from the ridge onto the main path, and the faint trod parallel to the path is now becoming a very visible scar. Looking up at the hill, they certainly look a mess, and the farmers not happy.
Presumably everybody will have to follow the flags on the race, which will follow the main path, so what's the point of reccying short cuts and upsetting the local land owner?
errrr I'm probably being excruciatingly dumb :o ....... I can't do this race now....SORRY......
Anyway.....would somebody like to substitute my place??
I've looked at the web site and it says this...
you need to substitute your entry please either
errrr how do I get a substitute??? DOES ANYONE WANT TO BE MY SUBSTITUTE?? ;)
- Ask your substitute to register with the SPORTident Online Entries System at https://www.sportident.co.uk/entries/login/login.php and ask the substitute to tell you their SPORTIdent Entries ID that is emailed to them when they register. Go to the 'Update Your Entry' link https://www.sportident.co.uk/entries/event.php?event_id=101 and transfer your entry. Your substitute is then able to update the entry, specifying the correct club name and the qualifying races. Your fee will not be refunded but your substitute does not have to pay again.
I'm not asking for any cash but would be MOST grateful if you would make a donation to Alf Tuppers charities......he has a just giving site...
Cheers guys.....

:D
I'm not doing it any more either Emmilou. I found the exchange really easy. The person who wanted my place registered with SportIdent & got their SI number. After that it was a piece of cake to transfer the place.
Ermmm, I know this is probably a really daft question......but when is the race? I might be interested Emmi, depending on when it is.
Offline this evening, back online in the morning.
Wasn't the deadline for substitutions 31st March?
Mrs M e mailed 3peaksentries yesterday after she was injured. Bryan arranged for someone on the waiting list to email his sportident details. Mrs M then transfered the entry.
The deadline for substitutions has extended.
My substitution went through on Tue 1st April.
Substitions now open until 14th April.
Also, does anyone know if there is any evening entertainment? I am sure I heard there was but can now find no reference. I know there is a hog roast in early evening/late afternoon but I want to know about booze??
I wish I could just think of the booze! Had a terrible day and don't think I can get to Ribblehead in the time given. Was ten mins slower than the cut off but every second counts! I am a fell 'donkey'!!! But I just love the Three Peaks. Wish I could go faster!
I'm sure you lot will provide great evening entertainment!!!
This route card is a brilliant idea, showing cummulative splits for various possible finishing times. For instance to aim for a 4 hour finish (I wish) I need to hit these splits:
PyG summit - 42 mins - easy
Ribblehead - 1:53 - doable
Whernside summit - 2:21 <cough>
Chapel le Dale - 2:46 - doable so long as I don't have uber cramp
Ingleborough summit - 3:15 <cough>
Finish - 4:00 - doable with legs still in working order
Stolly,
Isn't the time for PyG on that route card 37 minutes for a 4-hour schedule?
[Mind you, last year I was at PyG in 42 minutes and finished in 4 hours... Well 4 hours and 6 seconds anyway  But then I did gain more than 150 places from PyG to the end so I think I was probably taking it a little too easy at the start! :o ]
People keep telling me its all about putting in the hard work, so i put it in, got to the top of Pen-y-Ghent in 35mins (walkers route) and round all three in 5 hours 10 mins on saturday. Sorry MG but i don't think there is a short cut to fitness and speed, if i find one though i'll sell it you for a pint of Guinness;) Gonna have to enter the race next year:cool:
Clare Kenny of Calder Valley FR is doing the announcements at the finish, and is after any interesting information, titbits or gossip she can share with the assembled throng.
Go on, embarass your mates and e mail [email protected]
I think the route card splits just work based on average pace, so beware the target times it sets you for having to get to the top of Pen-y-Ghet and Whernside.
Better to look at previous results. I think low 40's up PG will be on target for a 4 hours time.
Agree (nearly).
A typical winner's time (Simon Booth) extrapolated for a 4 hour finish gives:
Schedule "3.58" "4.01"
PyG 39 37 37
Rib 1.41 1.36 1.36
Whe 2.18 2.14 2.17
Ing 3.21 3.19 3.22
Fin 4.00 3.58.11 4.01.55
I show my actual times for a 3.58 and 4.01 finish. The PPP is l-o-n-g and it is tempting to go off too fast up PyG and on the long run out to Ribblehead and pay later. As indeed my actual times show!
For what it's worth I offer my own sub-4 hour splits which I think are fairly typical and doable by any reasonably fit runner.
Penyghent 37
Ribble Head 1.33
Whernside 2.09
Hill Inn 2.34
Ingleborough 3.12
Finish 3.50.44
The annoying part about that run is that, although I was at the top of my form, I still failed to win the O/60's!! So come on you young 'uns. You can do it!!
Cheers!
Have just been looking at the race programme on the 3P's site. I see that
Mrs M is listed as an "elite runner" much to her suprise. Unfortunately she has had to give up her entry due to injury.
Ingleborough back to Horton is a boring slog. And a bit of an anti-climax, when you've reached the top of Ingleborough you feel like you've conquered the 3 peaks, but you've still a fair way to go and the signpost that says Horton 1 and a half miles needs moving towards the finish a bit:rolleyes:
