Well done too William. Oh and as for my ankle, although I was a complete cripple at the end, it didn't slow me down while I was running... much as I'd love to use it as an excuse. It was just my lead legs that weighed me down!

Well done everybody - was a glorious day for it. Sorry I had to shoot of before the finish. When we saw the 1st 2 runners coming past my fellow marshalls & I felt that they didn't seem to be exactly going at it in full throttle ;)

:D 20 mins to spare. But oh boy it got hard after that! 4:23.
My legs are on fire from the peat. It took ages to get it off and hot water greatly increased the burning. Anyone else suffer from this?

You must have been just in front of me Stef?? 4.23 too well on my garmin anyway so maybe I was a tad slower? Not too worry still came in before the 4.30 target :D got to Mam nik on schedule 2.10 at the trig then caught up in tourist traffic down to the checkpoint!!
Glorious day, bit too hot for me if I'm honest, god know's what I'll be like in 'summer' Wheels started coming off round brown knoll way in all that bloomin bog...the bon bons and dates weren't helping that much and am now convinved those power bar gels just don't agree with me....stomach cramps were not very pleaasant :(
annneeeeyway, was a grand day out although am aching like hell and post race cramps are a whole new experience!
Thanks to all the marshalls...especially the small one on Lose hill who was so brilliantly reading out all the numbers, nice to have something to smile about after getting to top of the climb!
Soup and cake was very much appreciated.
Lovely to see everybody, and even more so to be able to collapse in a heap on a field on a beautiful sunny summers like day. Well done to everybody that finished, an acheivement in itself methinks for us mere mortals!
:D

Re: Edale Skyline 29th March 2
Great day out!
I felt really strong as far as Lord's Seat but my recent cold caught up with me and it was a real struggle from Jacob's Ladder. I lost about 10 places in the last couple of miles (including a place to a guy who cut all the zig zags below Ringing Roger - not happy about that)
Stunning day for it. Thanks Mountain Man for the lift!

Re: Edale Skyline 29th March 2
Well done to everyone who ran, it's a tough route but very enjoyable. Can you imagine what it's like up there in bad weather? We were so lucky yesterday, the conditions were perfect if not a little too warm at times, my face looked like a beetroot last night.
Still can't believe you ran in white socks Mudlugger, what were you thinking? Surprisingly they looked quite clean at the end, I must have led you on a good path round the bogs at Brown Knoll! Glad your ankles survived.
-
Re: Edale Skyline 29th March 2
it was almost perfect conditions, particularly if your navigation is as good as mine ;)
thank you again to all the marshals and dpfr for putting on such a great event. so friendly and welcoming and brilliant spread at the end!
i'll catch you next time mrs stagger ;)

Re: Edale Skyline 29th March 2
Fantastic day out and a very big thank you to all in involved. I treated this as a long training run because I knew that I was not ready to race it; so I took it very easy to Mam Nick and then upped the effort a little but kept it very steady. Didn't look at my watch after the cut off so was very chuffed with 4.13 at the finish (thought I was going to be much closer to 4.30); that's a whole 4 mins up on last year! Best of all I felt tired but fine at the end (unlike previous years when I've been absolutely done in); even the 5 hour + drive home didn't hurt too much. Congratulations to all the finishers, especially my fellow Brightonian.
Cheers - Raymond
p.s. Emmilou were you number 115 with the hand written number?
p.p.s. I forgot to say I discovered that whatever ability I had for running down hill has vanished; now where did I put it?

He'd already passed me just as we reached RR checkpoint but I saw him cutting the zig zags from above. I think someone shouted as he undertook them, but that cut no ice with him. He seemed to know all the DPFRs, not sure if he was a brownshirt himself. No excuses for it. Tosser.

yep, that was me! even though about 4th to register my number has vanished so they had to make me one!! I'm assuming you flew past me at some point or are you the guy that commented about the view?!

I was just behind you at registration and a bit in front at the end; I didn't fly past anybody, chugged maybe. I had my black and orange MK vest on; one of the many 40 something, greying, balding short haired blokes to be seen huffing and puffing their way round yesterday.

The route description and pre race briefing from the organiser were at pains to explain that runners must keep to the paved zigs and zags coming off Ringing Roger.
I am sure it will have been a stipulation of the National Park in their granting permission to hold the race.
Straight lining the zig zags to gain some time and take some places at the end of the race would not be looked at kindly by the National Park or by other competitors who were dillegently sticking to the path. Very tempting to do when the competitive red mist is down, but rather ignorant and selfish.

Unless of course they didn't hear matey at the start reminding everyone about it. I was in the far left side of the line up at the start line and barely heard a thing. Also I don't think there were any markers either were there (too remind the ignorant or hard of hearing :))?

Re: Edale Skyline 29th March 2
I'd just like to say I really enjoyed the race. I was hoping just to get round because I had two months off with injury Dec - Jan and I'm only just getting back to fitness. When I entered the Skyline I set myself a tough target to train for. On the day it went like a dream and I got round much faster than I could have hoped. I feel really pumped up with my result and the whole race experience.
The variation in running was great, from smooth grass to flagstones to tussocky bog to boulders and peat hags and I loved it all. The views were great and the weather topped it all off. The course was superbly marshalled and the whole race organisation was perfect for this kind of race.
DPFR thanks for making my running year so far :)
Geoff B was that you I met at Jacob's ladder and followed on your sneaky shortcut? Certainly got us on the back of the bunch in front quicker than going round the path. Thanks for that. I was the Tring runner in blue vest / white bands, black shorts with vertical white stripes.

That's one place they should have a marshall!

I thought the briefing at the start said "keep to the path where the course is flagged" and remember on the descent noticing that there were no flags/tape on the zig-zags.
Just for the record, I stuck to the path, although I was running like Douglas Bader at the time.

Re: Edale Skyline 29th March 2
After initially being a little disappointed with my time, probably not helped by the sheer hell involved, I'm feeling better about it now.
Even though the skyline is about 2.5 miles shorter than the 3 peaks race route with some 700 ft less ascent, the winning times are more or less identical - plus or minus the 2 hours 50 mark. The terrain is no doubt about it tougher around the skyline and with maybe only 4 or so miles actually going anything like a downwards direction - I'd guess that the 3P has as much as 12 to 15 miles of its length generally descending, albeit with a fair few undulations along the way. The only area that the 3P is harder is on the ascent side of things, largely because of Whernside.
So all I now have to do is translate my skyline time into a matching 3P one

I thought you were being a bit hard on yourself too Stolly ;) You don't have the advantage of going out every day familarising yourself with the course like you do with the PPP either :p

what an excellent fellow you are....
I did the skyline as training for the 3P's and I found the sklyline quite a tough prospect, partic the protracted bog voyage,
was getting abit worried that the 3P's was longer and a tougher prospect
nice to get a knowledgeable perspective:)

Ah, thanks, now I understand. I couldn't hear a word of the instructions, didn't see anything on the website and nothing was mentioned when I registered. Just as well I was too knackered to be thinking of anything including shortcuts at the end! :)

Bit strong that...was it a taped section that was mandatory out of bounds section or part of the run in??
If not, it is perhaps a fair claim to make you own way off - surely thats a fell race tradition??
Maybe if you were quicker you could've caught him and called him a tosser!!
I understand though that he stopped running for the lad he "under cut" and offered him to let him by..only to be refused! Which is seemingly sporting conduct ...unlike your abusive tone!

Re: Edale Skyline 29th March 2
Id be surprised if anyone didnt hear the organiser state , keep to the zig zags both at the start and finish. It was loud enough to hear, I was right over to the left and i heard it.
So cutting the zig zags was not on at all. He must have known about it. And if they were shouting him why carry on like that.
Purpleplodder is dead right in saying TOSSER.
Anyway its a hard race and takes a few years to work it out i think. Everyone says the race doesnt start to you get to mam tor but I think the race starts about half way up to Brown Knoll. Its that boggy ground that zaps you and you have to really push the pain out of your system.
A decent race for me and i felt okay most of the way round. Well chuffed for Geoff B taking 1st V 50 , Brilliant;).
It wasnt a day for down and up for sure
Robin of Pennine would certainly been miles in front of me. But full respect for him and anyone attempting it.
Well done to all those attempting it for the first time.
The trick on this race is to drink , drink , and get energy into you going up Lose Hill.
Ive stashed a bottle and jaffa cakes at the bottom every year and its paid dividends for me defo.
Thanks to Dark Peak for brilliant organisation.
It takes a lot to organise a long race at this time of the year. Very rare we get that weather on that route.
Good support on route from Pennine members and there should be a dodgy photo appear at some point of me in TEAM HOWIE colours.
Stolly , Id say this race bears not on resemblance on the three peaks. You did well. Enjoy your running and never moan about your time.
People who know me know I never worry about my time.
I was probably one of few that came off the hill at the end hoping that it could have lasted longer.
Our time on the fells is precious. Enjoy every minute of it.
Where else could you be rewarded with a chocolate milkshake for doing that.:)

I say: Kick the tosser off a hill...ban him and disqualify him!!!!
Seriously.....was he contending for a top place? Did it alter any results in a major way? did he under take a whole group of runners? was he the only one who nipped a corner?
Next time either run past him and beat him on the hill or lodge a complaint to the organisers.
This site does get a bit wingey at times!

I honestly believe i possibly caused more damage by going over the peat after the woolpacks than he did cutting the zig zags
But the organiser had not been told to keep us off there.
I suppose he could have been in a state at that point in the race so maybe tosser was a bit over the top.
Would be nice of him to say what he did on here.
Wonder why he didnt cut the corners on the way out????.

Re: Edale Skyline 29th March 2
I must say all this name calling goes against my experience of the friendliness of the event
this was my 6th fell race and through not reading the website thoroughly and not hearing the briefing through a late call of nature I wasn't aware of having to abide by the rule on the way down
a fellow competitor, in good spirit, shouted to me when I started on the incorrect line down and I gladly retraced and re routed
i'd always think it's more grown up to have the courage to speak face to face at the time rather than putting the downer on an event by publically airing minor transgressions on a forum that many many people will read, not just those you hope/intend to punish
surely this is the metaphorical littering on the sport ?
-
Re: Edale Skyline 29th March 2
Just in case anyone's in any doubt as to whether or not cutting the zig-zag was allowed; here's the bit from the organisers site;
Quote:
........
9. Top of Jacob’s Ladder (GR 081861) 10. Grindslow Knoll Top (GR 110868) 11. Ringing Roger (GR 126872)
Follow the zigzags down the hill
12. Finish (GR 123863)
Perhaps 'tosser' is a bit strong but it does matter 'cos if runner's aren't prevented from cutting corners, then everyone behind will follow them, causing a nice big scar straight down the hillside. This gets the sport a bad name and could affect the viability of future events.
I agree that it should have been marshalled though.

Re: Edale Skyline 29th March 2
Are these sort of incidents not just a consequence of the growing popularity of fell running and influx of road/xc runners? People that have been on the fell scene for a few years will (I imagine) have adopted the generally accepted behaviours/attitudes e.g. sportsmanship, stiles:rolleyes:, friendliness etc.. Those fairly new to the scene may just be ignorant of the affect of their behavior. All that's needed is a bit of friendly education.:) (...and if that fails - drown them in a bog!:p)

Yes, that was me. I was struggling a bit by that point - you went flying away from me & disappeared into the distance!
Last year I showed your clubmate, Simon Barnett, across that bit I think.

No I don't think its that simple. In some races corner cutting is fine and others its not, usually down to the local landowners or national park views. For instance although I've never yet done the Ben I think the racing line there totally ignores zigs and zags. Its just a case of abiding by local rules.

I'm sure he will give his version of events, now he's aware of the growing lynch mob  From what I gather, when the guy he passed on the zig-zags shouted to him, he offered to let him run past him to re-gain his place.
