What shoes would be best for this beast then? I have the choice of dobbed (metal studded) orienteering shoes which are brilliant for snow/terrain running but lack cushioning, trail shoes (bit high profile, im worried about crocking my ankles) or gladiators (not much stability). Also, are the flagstones of the pennine way near top withins still covered in snow or has it melted?
Snowshoes by the sounds of it....!
I've just come back from helping flagging.
The deep snow is very sapping!
You'll be on snow all the way round, Frodo, so if you've got shoes that are good for that, that's got to be best. Trouble is they're not going to stop you sinking into it (unless you take Jodg's advice and wear snowshoes!)
I don't think a lack of cushioning is going to be a problem!! :D
I'd be very surprised if the flagstones are visible.
But its glorious out there. With the blue sky and white hills it's simply gorgeous. I envy you lot running tomorrow (from the comfort and warmth of my chair! ;) )
I'd reckon times will be an hour or two slower than they would normally be, but just treat it as a long day out in the hills.
I'll be flagging from early on then.:D Last night's run on Kinder was exhausting - not good prep for a tough day out tomorrow, but I'm going to treat it just as you suggest Bill.
I hadn't realised until I studied the map, that this area isn't totally alien to me, having visited parts of it on the nav leg of the 2006 Fell Relays and a couple of sections of the Hobble.:)
Looks like the forecast is for it to remain cold with clear blue skies so maybe I'll need to take sunscreen and sunglasses.
Have a good run 1 and all tomorrow - wrap up warm
I'm afraid I'm going to have to give it a miss. Been running with a slight heel problem which was aggravated at Mickleden last week on the hard tracks - been hobbling ever since. Tried to run on it last night but was putting stress on t'other parts of the body & had to bail out after 15 mins - hey ho.
