Thamks for that Will, I'll pass it on to my club. Shame, another casualty of these grim times.

I'm excited, Training and in! Bring on the bogs and bloody awful weather. Still the start and finish is only a couple of miles from home.
I was out on part of the route yesterday, it's looking pretty churned up in places - particularly the bit over Bingley Moor. From Whetstone Gate up to West Buck Stones was fecking awful, the worst I've seen it .... and of course, they make you stay on the north side of the wall nowadays.
I've been in deep on that bit on from Keighley Gate before now, and last year slipped and grazed my head on the wall. Might be worth going down and passed the cross. Did that recently and it wasn't too bad. Lets hope for a big freeze.
yes Matt, the detour via Cowper's Cross is a tad longer but certainly more runnable. there's not much difference time-wise. What you lose in seconds you'll probably save in energy. If you take the traditional route by the wall, there is in a few places a choice of staying very close to the wall or going slightly wider, and often the latter avoids some of the worst/deepest bogs and puddles. Ben
Unfortunately can't make Rombalds. I have a number for transfer, email [email protected] if wanted.
Thanks
Andy
Hope to see you and a few forumites tomorrow in Guiseley. Think I'll take a raincoat with me.
Well that was fun! Never run a race with my hood up for so long. Glad to see Guiseley. 12ish Years ago I did this in 3.30 - today 4.50. is this ageing gracefully.
Surprise! I managed to jump the culvert with a standing jump again. There's still life in the old legs after all. I'd probably teetered and tottered sufficiently slowly down to it that I hadn't exhausted myself too unduly. ;) In the end I dragged home in a near Personal Worst in 21 taking-parts. 5:20 was the best I could muster, which is pretty dire when I was once able to manage sub-4 finishes.
Regarding hoods, I spent most of the time cursing and swearing at my new inov-8 jacket because its hood took up a preferred position halfway down my face, blinding me to anything that was more than a yard away. I'd tightened all available cords, which only seemed to make it worse. It was only after returning home and 5 minutes of intense study that I found a secret, hidden pull-cord around the back that does the job. The cords I had tightened had just pulled the peak further down. I look forward to its next inclement outing to test it out properly. That could be this coming Saturday on Anglezarke Amble.
As I began my drive home I clocked warning signs about a clean air zone that will be imposed this spring. I checked on-line and was relieved to see that it won't apply to private vehicles, otherwise that would have been my last attendance at Rombald's Stride.
Morning All,
I'm new here... Only started running in 2019, having moved to Yorkshire from Sussex, and soon realised fells are the way to go.
Did a couple of shorter fell races e.g. Eldwick Gala last year and absolutely loved it.
Rombalds will be the biggest, longest one so far (appreciate it's not a fell race per se) and really looking forward to it. I live 200m from the starting line! My only concern is catching another lurgy from my two daughters.
Taking the afternoon of work today for a final long training run. Beautiful day for it, though might be a bit icy.
I'm fairly confident on the route now, it's just the distance I need to hack.
Who is on board this year?
I've enjoyed reading through this thread for all the hints and tips. Haven't braved jumping the culvert yet!
Hello Notters.
Let us know how you get on!
I don't know that particular race, however my first ultra was fairly near there, at the Haworth Hobble. I jumped in after doing a number of fell races. Fell apart a bit after about 18 miles but made it home.
Hopefully you'll be alright if you've done plenty of training.
Ah, good Man. You have my sympathy living in Guiseley! I live in Otley and have done Rombalds at least 10 times - I'll be there again this year, in a Black and White Otley vest and I wear glasses and have a red bumbag. say hello.
Well what to say, lots of good stuff on this thread. Plenty of good food at the checkpoints - you don't need to carry much.
Hardest navigation is going through Menston, finding the correct snicket/alley off Fairfax Road - Just after Fairfax Gardens.
After jumping the Culvert (I used to when I was younger, but...), make sure you keep far enough left, soon passing a big rock and go along the edge of the moor.
Yes, the climb back up the Chevin from West Chevin road is hell - Slippery and steep, but it is the last climb.
Good luck. Happy to answer any queries you have.
And
Take plenty of clothes, the weather is often awful. I've often been cold and wet on this. The last few years have been really windy.
When you pass Keighley gate you now have to run on the right (North)side of the wall - watch out for the bogs along there. They are deep enough to swallow a person!
Notters, the Stride is great fun in all weathers, and I'm in again this year for somewhere around the 16th time.
Don't worry about the distance. It's a walkers' event too, so you can go at any pace. Just keep putting one footie front of the other. At the end - and even if you live only 200 yards away - it's still worth staying in the school for the meat pie...and the cup of tea tastes marvellous.
I've generally been doing ~30 miles a week, so should be just about ok. Managed 15 on Tuesday before darkness fell - beautiful conditions!
Thank you! I'm technically in Yeadon, which is probably worse :-s
I shall probably have my Brighton beanie hat on unless it's unseasonably warm so you won't miss me!
I think I'm ok with those bits, found the big rock you mention on Tuesday and I've done the Menston bit a couple of times. Once you find the ginnel it's pretty much a straight line.
I guess my main concern is keeping going if soaked through from the start, may need to invest in a new coat next week.
I thought the general wisdom was to keep left of the wall? I was planning on going down to Cowper's Cross anyway, as this seems to be the official route (being more of an LDW event)?
It was all frozen solid on Tuesday which doesn't half make life easier:

There is discussion about the Cowper's Cross route above and it's drier and about the same time. I may well do it this year. You used to go down the left of the wall, but the Landowner complained.
My fastest ever time at this was a year when it was frozen solid - like a road race! Don't think I'll ever manage 3 1/2 hrs again.
Good luck and hope to see you.
I was wondering about Cowper's Cross too. I did it one year; think it was when I ran with Deejay, formerly of this parish.I do seem to recall that it wasn't quite as boggy.
The landowner might well complain but it's Access Land!
Did it at the weekend (in beautiful conditions). Definitely think I'd prefer it when warm and wet (as it looks like it will be :()

Funny how this discussion crops up every few years :-) Yes, the land to the left of the wall is access land but the landowner has complained on more than one occasion and the race organisers are quite explicit that you must stay to the right. It's as boggy as hell though, I was up there the other day in the ice and that was OK, but as soon as that melts it will be desperate. The Cowper's Cross route is quite a bit longer, I did some comparisons a few years back and recall there was no advantage in doing it and a bit more height gain. You might have marginally drier/less muddy feet, but that's about the only positive.
So it's looking set to be pretty mild (and therefore boggy)and windy.
Very excited mind!
Any other first timers?
@Martyn just spotted you're from North Leeds Fellrunners - have been wanting to come to one of your training runs for some time - is it ok to just rock up?
Yes, that would be fine. Just look at the website/public facebook page and find out where training is on a particular night and just bump up, one of the reasons I joined them is a) they're extremely friendly and b) don't have any agendas or political infighting. I'm proud to be a member, albeit one of the old guard :-)
Agree completely with your analysis, Martyn! I wonder, though, whether the official route has changed. I’m sure it always used to be to follow the wall - I think, going to the right- whereas the route description and event gpx now seem to indicate the Cowpers’s Cross way. If it has changed, I doubt anybody will pay any attention unless they station a marshal to police it. Most of us who’ve been Striding for years will otherwise follow the wall on autopilot.
It was bloody brilliant! Absolutely loved it, what a fantastic event. Great weather too (too warm if anything).
I completely bonked when I got to Menston but the jelly babies got me through.
4:40, which, considering I have a cold and it's the longest run I've done, I'm absolutely chuffed with.
There was someone in an Otley top by the door to the school when I finished - not sure if you - but I sat down with my head in my hands, couldn't speak to anyone!
Many more to come I hope.
Good effort and glad you enjoyed it. Very benign conditions this year and the climb up the Chevin was not slippery. It's a very friendly affair. That was Steve the photographer and Sharon giving out goodies in Menston. See Yorkshire runner FB for photo's.
I finished in 4:43 so you must have been just before me. What's your name? This was my 10th time and I was pleased as I didn't fall over, and was 10 minutes faster than last year and second MV65.
If you like this kind of thing I recommend Blubberhouses 25, a LDWA local event - Sunday 26th March
Paul Hayward.
That Blubberhouses one looks great actually, but I think my wife might have a word if I leave her with the kids for a whole day again so soon! May have to stick to the Ilkley Moor fell race.
I have stupidly signed up for Leeds Marathon - I should stress that I have no interest in road running but I feel I should tick it off. Hoping it'll be a doddle in comparison though.
Well we will be tramping over a lot of moors, farmland and a little road again next Saturday. Anyone out for a trot and mobile feast?
I didn't run this today as I've knackered my back, but went out to watch. Good day for it apart from the wind on top. Quite a few fallers judging by the blood on folks.
MattPo that explains why I couldn't find you in the results. Where were you watching? Was it you at the bottom of the Chevin who called out "BritNick"? If not I've no idea who it was.
It was a nice day for it. As usual I had to strip off a bit once I got down to Burley Woodhead off the final moor.
