Great, a nice leg....well, they're all nice really but that one is particularly beautiful....if tough. Best give Steve Sladdin a ring if you haven't already, let him know to expect you.

The cafe near the start (opposite Andy Thornton's warehouse, just round the corner from the rugby club finish) is a great spot to refuel after a reccy! And now open Sundays.
Good to see runners on the recce this morning. A very pleasant tootle up to Blackshaw Head. Looking forward to seeing everyone in a fortnight.
About 10 team places left if anyone is considering a last minute entry.
Reminder to make sure all of your team personnel are familiar with the kit requirements...there will be checks. There were DQs last year.
Demons to slay on leg 1 this Sunday. We were in about 6th place last year & missed a turning about 1/4 of a mile from the finish. Lost about 5 mins & came back around 10th.
I might have a photo of you looking miffed somewhere. Those recces, worth doing.
I wouldn't mind seeing that photo ! Might spur me on come Sunday ! I stepped in at the last minute last year, so had no chance of a recce !
Somehow I must have missed you....Got runners either side of you....you were eleventh at that stage.
No, Crag Vale. I have the two Ilkley runners crossing the finishing line. I think you may be on one of the photos I took at the start.
I'm a late replacement entry for my club's relay team and will be running leg 6. Could you please let me know what conditions are underfoot? I am planning to run in comfortable trail shoes (Puma Trailfox 4), but on a recent Yorkshire three peaks run, I found them a bit low on grip on the steeper and muddy downhill sections. Are there any steep muddy downhills expected? What fraction of leg 6 are on tarmac / farm track / grass / mud? Also, will there be any bogs, in which case I would wear waterproof socks?
Many thanks, and have a good run!
Can't say I've run the whole of leg 6 (cos I'm doing leg 2:wink:), but I do train along some bits of 6. Would say it's mainly a mix of field and woodland paths, so no mega slippy descents. I'd have thought something like the Trailfoxes would strike about the right balance, as there are a couple of mile-long sections of tarmac. Wouldn't think it'll be mega-boggy, you're not up on the moors on this section. Other opinions from more recent recces will hopefully be along shortly... Enjoy!
Ran Leg 6 as a recce on Sunday and your Trailfox should suit fine.....it's more of a trail/roadrace there. No bogs but puddles on the canalpath to jump in if you still want to wear your socks:)
Are you male, just been out on leg 3 this evening ( about 7pm above todmorden) recceing, been on your own and asked two women runners where the calderdale way went? They will have seemed very definite about where to go and sent you on your way with some directions. Well if that's you you need to go out and recce it again, my wife has just come back from a run and she's sent you the wrong way. You should have continued downhill.
Sorry about that, I promise to not let her give directions in future.
He should have come on the group recce with me last week. There are 2 or 3 places on leg3 where it is very easy to go wrong. I can confirm that leg 6 is probably the least "fell" type leg...lots of trail and a fair bit of tarmac.
I'm doing leg 3 ,hopefully remember it from last time I ran it. Once you have done the climbing, gone around the farm, you run over Tod.golf course I seem to remember, then deviate away from the official CW route and take the road up to and turn right in to Blackshawhead. Then we will, like most leg 3 runners do, jog back along the route to Tod sports centre for shower, coffee and maybe even a beer !
You climb 650 feet to the rocks, then drop back across the stones and down a gravel track (300 ft of descent). You then run up through the pig field to the golf course. Left at the road and right at the Elephant and Gorilla (AKA shoot the horse farm). Through there and traverse for about a mile until you go through a stream. Then sharp left (an easy turn to miss) up around another farm .... through the junk...then a stiffish climb back up to the next bit of road. Left and right on tarmac to the big rock, then left across the moor. Drop down about 150 feet and then back up to Blackshaw head on the tarmac. Total climb about 1150 feet. Net climb about 650 ft. Record....about 32 minutes (just short of 5 miles).
Big thank you to Halifax Harriers. Cracking organisation for such a big event today. Not happy about my 4.30 a.m alarm however. Thoroughly enjoyed the run once I got going & came back, a little slower than last year, in 1.28. Not so sure about the "duckers" of the tape right at the start mind. Then the aggressive lady shouting at a poor chap to "go on then" when queueing at a stile. Then her team mate attempted to queue jump at the next one to catch her up ! Never mind, it must mean more to some people than others.
Thanks again H.H.
Thanks to Halifax from me as well for their impeccable organisation. I always enjoy these relays and today I was running with someone of very similar ability so it was even more enjoyable as we took turns with the lead. It was warm going today on Leg 4 but once we were up on the moor it felt a bit cooler. Definitely my favourite Leg that
It was a grand day. At least you went the right way today Jez. Unfortunate that one or two folks let their teams down but most of the 1000 plus runners did so with full kit and in the right spirit. I wouldn't like to be Dave from Clayton tonight though
His leg 3 runners arrived, in 2nd place, absolutely paggered after battering the hill only to find that Dave, one of their leg 4 team mates, was not on the start line waiting for them.....but off eating cake or something. They lost 1 min 45 seconds whilst they looked for him (much to the amusement of the other assembled teams...but not to the knackered finishers). I fear there may be blood...
I should be able to put the results up soon. Congratulations to the Stainland Lions ladies pair who won the £100 bonus pot on Leg 5, just beating the target time (1:02:00) by 2 seconds. Fantastic news.
We were well down on last year's leg 4 time. How did others do on leg 4 compared to last year? Nice and pink now :-)
Cheers BB. Noted.
Poor Dave. Is he no longer with us?
Knowing how delicate the sensibilities are of people on this here forum, I used "eating cake" as a euphemism. :o
I hope he has been forgiven the bad timing of his visit to the pool. Although an inconvenient time to avail himself of the conveniences, it's better that than having an explosive event somewhere around Jerusalem Farm.
After three years of trying, Sale Harriers took first team. The whole team had a few jars tonight to celebrate.
Excellent event as always Halifax Harriers.
Some photos now up on our flickr page. Link is on our website homepage http://www.halifaxharriers.co.uk/
They are medium files. Anyone wanting bigger files/prints etc contact me by PM here.
I was one of the incoming runners 'looking for Dave' at the end of leg 3. Dave is in no danger, he's a class runner and probably made up more time than he lost. Our team finished 2nd and the time lost didn't make any difference to the result. A little bit stressful at the time though obviously. Im glad the other teams found it entertaining.
His sprint from the little room was very impressive
