I normally vault the gates.
Apparently there was in the region of 70 ladies in Saturday's race, perhaps enough to warrant a separate race? That way if there was any queueing then at least it would be fair to the ladies, and I guess, in some cases, the men too.
They're used to queuing in the post office. Etc. ;-)
To be fair to the Burnden runner it was only his first fell race and he's new to running. He didn't realise what the queue was for, and just assumed it was people going slowly ( fair comment with mapper there :p) As soon as he realised the error of his ways he joined the queue. There was no intention to cheat, and he apologises for transgressing one of the cardinal unwritten rules of fell running. Fortunately the barracking didn't put him off, and he's keen to do some more proper races, and I'm sure he'll be as grateful for the rest at stiles as the rest of us are.
Oh great race, great beer and great to see wharfeego has lost a bit of weight at last ;)
There never used to be this problem with a stile when I was doing the race. I seem to recall we went left of the house at Buttock and up to the double gate, which was always opened for the race.
PS - there were some big fields even back then (it wasn't THAT long ago!) :)
