Graham Breeze noted in his article Classic lakeland races that the population of fellrunners was ageing . Has this stat changed or are we still ageing even further.
Daz,
Although this won't be up-to-date, based upon the membership stats provided by Martin Stone to the FRA Committee earlier this year the membership has an average age of 47, with the average male member being 47 and the average female member being 39.
I've not really got the time to go back through the lists over the past years, but it is generally accepted that people are taking part in active sports later in life these days, and that there is an increasing choice of activities available for young folk. Without looking at any other measures, these two factors are likely to create an aging population.
Alan
so... the average is older than all previous estimates... and I'm still older than the average:(
I'm not entirely sure what the point of this thread is but two things that may be relevant...
1) Not all fell runners are members of the FRA
2) Not all members of the FRA are fell runners.

Good point Steve, I also think the younger runners are less likely to join an organisation, even join a club.
