Aha, many thanks for those results Matt. Pleased to see we beat the fastest walker home :p
Derby Tup - I can confirm that Matt, being from Stourbridge, has both webbed feet and 6 toes. It's quite common there ;)

That must be why those Vasque trainers won't fit!
Is anyone planning to do this one on 18th April? If so, anyone interested in a couple of recces over Easter weekend involving a bit of car shuttling?
I'm having another crack at this, after getting lost last year
Easter weekend is Manx MM weekend though... :D
jimbob,
It's a new route - changes every two years - so you'll probably get lost again. Calderdale's like that. :(
Thanks Merry. I'll try. Have a good Waltz :D
I'm doing the Woldsman which is the same weekend (I think). But may be up for some reccing just to get long runs in and to help out with the car shuttling.
Is there a specific route you should follow or is it just get yourself to the listed checkpoints asap?
I ask as there are a few places where the fastest way is tarmac but the more scenic way is off road.
I and one other have pencilled in Good Friday and Saturday (10 & 11 April) for recces. Not confirmed yet but strong possibilities.
I've promise to do this one, I only hope I can recover in time for the following week and the PPP (and the DF)
Me too Ian, and you're a lot fitter than me:eek:
I'm up for it as long as it's nice and steady.
Well, have decided to pitch up after a shocking showing on the Haworth Hobble. This was my first long distance jaunt, does everyones knees feel like they've been boiled for the first few weeks afterwards?
I've just checked the kit requirements. I was amazed to see far fewer demands than last year and all years before it. The following items are no longer mandatory:
Torch
First aid kit
Walking or running trousers
Full waterproofs
Fleece or similar
Emergency rations (min 6 oz)
Adequate footwear
Pair of gloves and headgear.
A new mandatory requirement is a mobile phone. This could pose a problem for the few who have never invested in such modern technology.
Added is advice that competitors should wear or carry appropriate and adequate clothing, footwear and waterproofs.
It's good to see a scouting event crediting ultra walkers and runners with the common sense to look after themselves and take appropriate equipment according to their requirements (all will require adequate footwear but not all will require a torch). Well done Calderdale Hike organisers.
It's a pity there isn't a route description up any where though. How did you go on your recce did you find an obvious route. I'll be trying to link the Cps together tommorrow on memory map.
I'm race number 497 and I'm also a guine pig. if you see some runners having heart rate monitors fitted and having blood samples taken mid route:eek: then they will be part of the same tests.
Hi Ian,
I'm one of the Guinneapigs as well. I already know what it's like from the Round Rotherham last December. It's not that bad. You'll find yourself on many occasions running along clutching a piece of tissue to staunch the bloodflow from your recently stabbed finger. He'll probably have had a go at most of them by the end of the day. You might want to keep your toes at the ready just in case. I'd suggest going without socks. Leaving your shoes behind as well would be a great help ;)
The recce went OK thanks. A lot of it is clear, but there are always some non-obvious bits in Calderdale. Put it this way, I'm glad I didn't leave the recce until the day. I got all my dithering out of the way in advance. There again I'm not the world's best navigator. I'm sure you'll be fine (mostly).
I'm number 402, by the way.
Rule 5. Competitors must ensure that they are fully conversant with the route and list of Checkpoints. A complete and fully up-to-date list will be on view at the start from 0600 hours on the day of the Hike.
if they put one up before Saturday I will do my best to learn it but at the moment all we have are checkpoints so I think I'll just take what I think is the fastest route.;)
They've also asked for the full south pennines map. did anyone get away with printed laminated sheets. I find these much easier to handle.
This route looks quite hilly in the second part of the race and we have to go over Stoodly ! Again!
Well, Im number 499 - also had some stats from the Lincoln Performance Centre for VO2 max and lactate stuff, the tester said I'd be better suited as a marshall than a competitor!, not sure whether he was kidding:D
Did 16 miles of the route last weekend on a glorious Monday - interesting to look at Stoodley Pike realising that i'd be looking at it for about 6 hours before I actually crawled up to it. Looked easy to follow from Walshaw but I'll be amazed if I dont get lost crossing the canal to the tops at the start - if anyone sees me (blue Tickhill RC shirt) looking at a map upside down then feel free to laugh loudly:confused:
Anyone want to share transport to Calderdale Hike? From Preston or on the way
Best of luck to all Calderdale Hikers
Looks like you'll have good weather, sun's out in Ripponden at the moment;)
Tried to time my run today to see the racers over top withins but failed - its a great day here for it
A new route this year Saz, nearest we got was Walshaw but made up by going up Thieveley Pike and Stoodley .
A big thank you to all the helpers and for organising the sunshine so we could enjoy the finish outside for a change .
Hello to Ian Dark Peak
