Is the Kinder Dozen the same date as The Glorious Twelfth?
It's a bit like that, but doesn't have the guns and the killing. The Dozen also involves a bit more distance and climb.:)
Did this today with Kat in the Hat as training for her BG.
We got round in 7-12, Kate's gps said 22.5 and a bit miles and my altimeter reckons there was 9820 feet of climbing.
It was pretty warm, well what did we expect on mid-summers day !
I am now a bright red faced sunburnt plodder...
Will probly have another go with a lighter pack and armed with a bit of knowledge of the route - we had to consult the map and compass a lot!
Sub 7 is quite possible, but sub 6 is going some - it probably helps if you have ankles of steel and are as fearless going downhill as Geoffrey B is!
I can't thnk of a better reason:DQuote:

Purple plodder has beaten me to it - however, a great day out despite the muggy heat and a little lack of water on my part. I was happy with our time given that this was on-sight and no reccying (although between us there's a fair bit of local knowledge! - not as much as Geoff thou' ;-)). Sub 7 would be very do-able.
It would be much easier either earlier or later in the year when the bracken is low. The worst parts yesterday where through knee deep or deeper bracken.
I'm still none the wiser as to how Geoff did 5:45! Absolutely flying...
Kat
Hi Kat - sounds like we swapped locations for the weekend, as I was at Wasdale Head last Friday!
Well Done on the Dozen! (and to Purple Plodder!)
Have you set a date for your BG?
If I'm free I'd be more than willing to help... :)
Yesterday did 7 ascents following yje dozen route from Edale YHA up Jaggers Clough and then worked clock wise to kinder Low. I wasnt sure on a couple particlarly the first and second. On the first up to Nether Moor I followed Jaggers Clough too far I think and had to cut back down to find NM summit. I wonder if I should have gone straight up the hill side from the bottom of JC and avoided JC altogether? Is there a trod up to NM? The second ascent to druids is OK and decent into Ollerbrook OK, but I wasnt sure of best route up Ringing Roger? I folloed a good path westwrds out of Oller Brook and soon found my self at the normal Edale route to RR. Again is there a more diredt route and any trods?
From GK summit I made a bee line to Crowden bank/stream on steep grass and lots of contouring. Is the any trod here? Weather by then was terrible, whiteout conditions so couldnt see a better route. Any one have any advice which would ne much appreciated.
thanks
Simon
Nice one Simon. must have been tough in those conditions.
From JC(bottom) to NM you can go up direct and slightly rigtwards until you pick up the trod on the blunt ridge. this is hard mid-late season due the bracken. the other option is to head up the clough and up the wall line. third and easiest although longer is to take the track left until you can pick up the wall/fence line and up past the quarry.
To RR I take your route as this is nearly all runable but early on you can go direct but this is rough
from GK head south on the path off the top until off the steep bit that avoids the steep contouring.you can go directly west down the blunt ridge and there is a trod but it's not always obvious, esp under snow;)
Ian
Cheers Ian, probably go for the whole route soon, its surprisingly good!
Got this in mind for later in the year and started reccie of the route.
Quick question which is the best way from Harry Moor Ford to kinder Low?
Cheers
Did the Kinder Dozen today in 7hr 42 mins. Found it hard going for last 3 hours, but that is only to be expected! Good BGR training, thats for sure. Made a couple of navigation errors as I knew none of the route. Probably lost 20 mins or so altogether. Must be lovely to know Kinder so well that you know where all the little trods are and always be on the best line!
As other posts have said, route can be rough and tussocky. I lost count of the number of times I nearly turned my ankles! Otherwise conditions were near perfect, not too warm and no strong wind.
My summit splits were:
GK 25, CT 60, EC 1.27, KL 1.57, SH 2.33, FN 3.17, SS 4.09, KE 5.02, CK 5.40, NM 6.13, DS 6.52, RR 7.29

Well done Spookster
It does look a good day for it.
How reliable are water sources on this? I'm planning attempting this soonish and want to keep carrying water down if possible
Do you have a grid reference for Crookstone Spring Ian? Could have done with it today!
grand day out around Kinder today, including a few bits of the Dozen that I'd never done before: dropping off Grindslow Knoll to the bottom of Crowden Clough then up to Crowden Tower was straightforward, and absolutlely loved the idea of going between Kinder Low trig and Sandy Heys trig via the Kinder stream crossing - that went well too: passing a couple of abandoned millstones on the way down near Cluther Rocks, and taking in an icy Mermaid's Pool on the way up http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/...hot_smiley.gif
think I'll be seeing a lot of Kinder over the next few months (BG training), so will deffo recce all the Dozen "bobs" - who knows, might even do the whole thing at some point...
DTS
I was out there on saturday doing some of the "bobs". I did Nether Moor, Druids Stone, Ringing Roger and Grindslow Knoll. For me the worst of all of the dozen ascents is that to the Druids Stone from the YHA. its invariably saturated and boggy and genrally not that pleasant. After that most of the ascents and descents are actually quite pleasant and I think my favourite descent is down from Druids Stone and the descent from crowden tower to the foot of Jacobs ladder. I've never done the whole dozen, eight is my best so might put that on the list for next year.
I think I'll try a Kinder half dozen around Christmas time and build up from there.
Whats the total climbing for the whole dozen ?
Decided to stop being lazy and look at the thread and I see its around 10,000 ft. I think I would quite possibly die if i did the whole dozen.
I enjoyed Crowden Tower to Youngate Bridge too
best descent (not on Dozen) was the last one I did, from the pointy bit just to the west of Sandy Heys down to the bottom of William Clough - very fast!
Will - Kinder Killer is 7 - and more in the way of paths rather than open hillside - there's a thread for it here: http://forum.fellrunner.org.uk/showt...=kinder+killer
I think it's bit less than 33M btw
I knew he'd done a fast time, impressive stuff
It is a cracking training run. I think it took my about 6:30 on a murky, wet day. I really enjoyed it and would love to do on a warm summer or spring day. Highly recomended
Daz. Thanks for that, Kinder Killer looks a good option for me. Might attempt that later this month.
Perhaps a summer forum meet up to do the Dozen could be arranged ?
DanAzz & I did a few more Kinder Bobs today:
Madwoman's Stones down to Ashop Farm (that's a nice one)
up to CK, down to bottom of Jaggers
up to Nether Moor, down to YHA (messed that one up by dropping too early towards Clough Farm)
up to Druid's Stone, down to bottom of Ollerbrook (also messed up - came down brook itself - don't ask why! :o )
I know most of them now (although need to revisit a couple) - will probably attempt in a couple of months when there's a bit more daylight...
Probably worth noting to those that have this on their tick list. You must go pre June to improve your chances, Where is it is possible all year round it is much harder when the bracken is up. March-April -May are probably the best months, I think there are some DPer's going around again this weekend.
I'm planning to go round again sometime during the next few weeks, although I prefer a Bowden Bridge start rather than Edale.
I highly doubt you'd be a "slow" as me :D so that should be no problem
if I do fix a date, I'll announce it on here
[although be warned: I do tend to do these things on the spur of the moment depending on mood/weather forecast, and sometimes using a day off work in the week]
