Snowdon Race

The hard bit for me starts when I realise that the blisters have started........... You know those big full sole blisters on the bottom of your feet. I've worn fell shoes, trail shoes, road shoes but each time I've run Snowdon, somewhere on the downhill I suddenly remember that from that point on every step I take will make the blisters worse. It starts with a gentle dull warm feeling that gradually turns into a painful sharp hot feeling. This rarely happens in other fell races and nowhere to the same extent as Snowdon - I think the long uphill on a hot day generates heat in the feet and softens them up and the downhill just mashes them. This is what makes the last stretch on the downhill tarmac even worse. (If anyone's got any magic solution to this let me know please)

Bloody didn't work for me last year!!!! when I took the moleskin off in the hotel after the race, all five layers of skin on my soles came with it!:eek:

Oh yes bloody big ones too but the moleskin should have cured that shouldn't it!!!!!!!!!:rolleyes:

NB 834 road shoes and hilly Twin skin socks plus a good dusting of cornflower on the feet before putting the shoes and socks on (damn site cheaper than the proprietary foot powders) worked for me for the last couple of years.

Do`s not stop you falling and cracking a couple ribs though.


No Snowdon for me this year i have opted for Ben Reinnes.

Just checking whether anyone knows the official ruling at the Snowdon race with regards to not sticking to the track itself.................at least 6 quality time savers on the descent, just that I heard that it was "officially" not allowed, then again only checkpoints are at halfway, clogwyn and summit - correct or not??

I did the race last year and as far as I know the only ruling is that you must not follow the railway track up or down. A few took different routes coming down but everyone followed the same route to the summit.

Also heard that this year due to fact that train only goes to Clogwyn station that we can run from Bwlch Glas (Miners / Llanberis / Ranger meeting point) to summit on railway track............anyone know if this is true and if so anyone think it would save some time??

Never thought about the fact that the train may not be going to the summit with the works that are going on. If its the case I suppose it is possible you could save time both ways. Something to think about.

Should suit the track runners!:)

I've also heard that running on the track ,just before the summit, is permited this year .its definetly going to save a bit of time.
i think the rules do say that you do have to follow the Llanberis path to the summit and back.
any way if your going to take short cuts your only cheeting yourself in the long run

Rocksteady, my mum used to say things like that but then I stopped believing it when West Ham illegally played Tevez and suffered a small fine rather than a points deduction proving that CHEATS DO PROSPER!!

I heard that last night, I was talking to one of the local race organisers and they reckoned that the train track would be used. Would be a bit faster, wonder what they'll do about the records, wasn't the existing record set when running up the train track anyway though?

Anybody after an entry for this?
I pre-entered but am very unlikely to be going now.
Wouldn't normally be bothered but am too tight to lose £12 without a fight.

I'm doing it but I'm camping on friday night somewhere round tryfan then its only a short drive down to llanberis from there. Hopefully the descent won't kill me as much as the descent off coniston did on sunday

I have been looking forward to the Snowdon run but aggravated an old injury last weekend and have not run for a few days so the rest should have done me good. Will try a run later to see how it feels. If not running will be taking photos on the mountain so plenty of smiles please. Did the race last year and it was a great day. Will be travelling down on Saturday morning for this years event.

What is the deal with collecting numbers for this race? Do I need to prove my identity to ensure people do not claim numbers for someone else? Do I need to take anything else with me to registration? Do I just collect my race number on the start area?

Doing this one again, although will struggle after little training these last few months, but it'll still be as good as ever. Going to be a bit of a rush to get there in time, coming from London first thing in the morning though.

Roady, standard procedure - rock up at the electric mountain visitors centre, tell them your name, pick up your chip and number (+ t-shirt?). Simple as that!

Also don't forget to put the chip on your PUMA shoes this year, I won't be there to remind you.

Can you put this on the Forum? For some reason I cannot get on to it

Yes the route down has changed slightly this year due to the fact that no trains will be running to the summit.

It is reverting to the original course of many years ago.

You will be directed onto the railway track and stay on it for a bout 400mtrs before returning onto the main path at Bwlch Glas

It will be marshalled and partly taped. It will cut out the congestion on the narrow path from Bwlch Glas to the summit.

This route change only applies because trains are not going to the summit

What shoes are people wearing?

I've worn fell shoes in the past for this one but am thinking of using an old pair of road shoes this time.

I'm not doing the race, I don't think anyway, my wife was but she's had to drop out at the last minute so I may run with her entry.

If I do I'll probably wear road shoes, its such a good trail and very hard on your feet. In fact most of the paths on Snowdon are fine in road shoes.

Saying that if it's very wet, which is quite likely, I'd be tempted back towards fell shoes.

yep, thats what I'am thinking. Road shoes fine but not if its going to be wet.

I am planning on running in road shoes if not pouring down with rain. Did it in road shoes last year and found it ok but that was on a dry sunny day.

Could be an outing for the Mizuno Wave Harriers if it's damp.....

I'll be wearing my wave harriers wet or dry. The are just as comfy as my road shoes and I like the bit of extra grip they'll give on any loose shale etc

Sounds like a good shout. Always feel very surefooted in my harriers on most surfaces. Whether they'll stop my legs giving up halfway down the descent is another matter!
