there is mention of a cut off at 1pm - any one know where this is and the distance and ascent until this point?
just entered this one http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/...sed_smiley.gif http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/...ile_smiley.gif
longest distance I'll've ever done
which will be nice
I feel a couple of recces coming on...
I have entered this one as well Daz, looks to be a nice varied route taking in paths I have not been on in years if at all. That climb up the road to Stanage will be a slog at that stage. I will have to recce it as well but not sure when.
Derby Tup - are there any other tricky bits that need looking at. Any recommendations on the route choices they give?
Seem to remember it was quite straightforward apart from the descent down off Win Hill. One thing that put me off was around 20 dibber points. We (I teamed up with various folk through the day including several forumites) made sure we dibbed everything for fear of not getting a result if we didn't but folk were recorded in the results who missed some. I wrote to D&W saying how much I enjoyed the day but saying I didn't think the dibbers fitted in with the feel of the event. It was very hot last year and carrying some water isn't a bad idea as I remember us all running out toward the end
Feel free not to dib at all the checkpoints it seemed to be optional last year.
See you there. I might even wear a Fell Pony vest....
I don't know why, but I'm thinking about doing this too.
Well I did enjoy it last year despite losing loads of time looking for dibbers (made a good excuse anyway), and probably would have done it this year if it had been the same time, I wish they hadn't put it back but might see if I can do it nearer the time. Is there an entry deadline?
Thanks FITC.
Get on with your reports.
and make sure you put the punctuation in the right places.
I'll say a prayer for a blessing on your key board.
I am sure it will help.;)
I’m also thinking of entering and this would also be my longest run. What is the furthest you have run to date and what time are you aiming for in this?
Appears to be a maximum of 10hours to complete which is ~3mph – little more than a fast walk – how hard can it be!!!
Don't underestimate it novice. I did last year :o It seemed tougher than I expected with some good running but quite a lot of climbing on a hot day. Last year's results here might give you a target to aim for
http://www.darkandwhite.co.uk/result...20results.html
Thanks for that
The problem is I live in self denial and always think things will be easier than they actually are until I do them. I then tell myself I’ll never be so daft again. However couple of weeks later the pain has gone and I’m thinking of the next at the edge of my ability race!! Oddly I enjoy it!
I like the idea of an 'edge of my ability' challenge  Keep pushing on :)
I did Troller's Trot back in March, that's 25M and I got round in 5:40 which is 13 1/2 min/miling, and I walked long stretches after half way cos I was having a bit of a "bad day"
I'm hoping to hold to no slower than 15-min-miling at LTOB, so if I can crack 8 hours I'll be happy
ain't Progressive Overload wonderful?!
I'm actually using LTOB as a tester/stepping-stone towards Bullock Smithy at beginning Sept...
Daz I've done Trollers in 4hour 22min and the Long Tour took a bit over 8hour 30min. I rocked up thinking it was a Haworth Hobble with a bit of extra climb so 7hour was my original target but it's tougher than it seems. It's one of those events like the Calderdale Hike that seem harder than you expect
I had a bad day at Trollers, I was trained to go about 5hrs I reckon
since then I've been doing regular long days out, including Kinder Killer, 5Trigs, Duddon and supporting BG Leg4, so I stick to my 8 hour prediction http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/...out_smiley.gif http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/...ink_smiley.gif
recce'd most of the latter half of LTOB today
did about 23M total (inc. one unscheduled diversion :o )
flippin knackered
great course though - really looking forward to it now
lantern - it's a date! ;)
I remember it well. Agree that it was significantly harder than anyone expected, although a fab day out.
I'd be delighted to get anywhere near 8 hours this year, to give a bit of context, this year I've done the Haworth Hobble (31m) in 5:45, Calderdale Hike (36m) in 7:20ish, this is a similar distance but much harder!
I just hope the dibbers are in more sensible places this time, not hidden around the back of trees or under bridges!
Well I'm in: just entered. Looks to be a good one this: has anyone got soft copy of last year's route description?
Cancel that request: just found one with Google.
Just been having a look through the route description - last year's I assume, although it's not dated. It mostly looks clear enough, but could someone who's done it before have a go at clarifying the bits that look a bit confusing? They are:
1. It looks complicated from CP16 down to the railway bridge at 243793 (Upper Padley), following paths not on my map. Is it easy to find the route here, or is it easy to go wrong?
2. Which is the right approach to CP18 along Highlow Brook? The right of way climbs way above the stream to the south, then drops back down. There's a path marked on my map on the north bank of the stream, but it's not a right of way. There's no path marked along the south bank. The route description doesn't tell you to cross to the north bank: it just says "continue up the valley". Which is the way to go: north bank, south bank, or do we have to climb out of the valley & drop down again?
3. The final descent into Bradwell looks complicated. "Onto the lane down to a hollow then bear R up the short slope to an open area (The Green), straight on (Gently downhill) taking steps on the R." The lane leads down to the main road anyway. Where are the "hollow", "The Green" and the steps? Just before joining the main road or further up the hillside on the way into Bradwell? I suppose I could go & recce this on the morning of the race - I'd hate to go wrong that near the end.
It looks a good route anyway - bits I know & bits I don't, & no shortage of climbing.
splatcher:
1) CP16 down to the railway bridge - I thought I'd have trouble with that bit, but was actually dead easy - as you go through the kissing gate (not stile) you just go straight on down the bank (very steep) and drop to an easily visible path, go right (SW) contouring along through quarry until you get to the ruins of what would've been the housing for pulling the trucks up the incline (don't know technical term), then down the incline to where an obvious path comes across at right angles (and the incline below is heavily overgrown anyway), left at the path for a few yards, then down right alongside wall
2) Highlow Brook - well spotted! I just followed the main path to the South, which involved quite a lot of ascent/descent to Stoke Ford - I should've noseyed over the first footbridge to check for a path to the north but didn't :o
need somebody else on this one...
(and 3) cos didn't do that bit)
It's all abit of a fog I'm afraid, although I don't remember having any difficulties on the last bit. I seem to think you just kind of drop down to a largish road, through some grass and down some steps, which presumably are 'The Hollow', 'the green', and 'the steps'.
Depending on how Grimsthorpe Ultra (70 miles) goes a fortnight before, I fancy this one.
I entered this ages ago thinking (like DT) that it'd be similar to the Wuthering Hike - a bit more ascent maybe, but also a couple of miles shorter. However, having read this thread, looked at the course profile, and reviewed last year's finishing times, I'm now thoroughly worried.
I reckon I could need 9/10 hours for this. (That's despite normally doing the Trollers in about 4:30, Daz!) Can anyone confirm the cut-off arrangements? I thought you had to finish inside 8 hours, but I must be wrong as nearly half last year's field would have been disqualified if that had been the case.
Tussockface, one thing to bear in mind is it was very hot last year. I guess it cost a lot of folk 30 - 45mins
I am toying with this but not sure with it being just 2 weeks after The Lakeland 100 decision decisions
Just been looking through last year's times & comparing them to those for last year's High Peak 40 (which I ran). The Long Tour is 8 miles shorter (almost 9 when I measure it actually), and has about 250ft more climbing. And yet times for the Long Tour were only a few minutes quicker than the HP40 on average. The hot weather and (presumably) harder conditions underfoot must account for the difference in speed. I did the HP40 in 7:45 last year, so I'm going to aim for 7:30 in the Long Tour, and hope for 7:15.
Tussockface - there's a 5 hour cut-off at the Ladybower dam, and 10 hours overall
I actually like the fact that this is not a typical LDWA course - I prefer routes with as little flattish stuff as possible
but I'm still revising my estimate to 8:30 http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/...ink_smiley.gif
Fond memories of the 15 Trigs eh ... I forced myself to jog bits of it as I was up against the clock and the darkness :(
I couldn't agree more - it is more of runners course, I wonder whether the time limits would put off walkers anyway.
After much thought I'm not going to do this, I'll do a much flatter 53 miler the following weekend instead.
