My kit is packed 7kg/15lbs in weight, as this is my first MM I hope that it is not too heavy, now looking for a rubber boat that doesn’t weigh too much. ;) With the rain and fog it looks like I am going to be thrown in the deep end for my first one, almost literarily.:confused:

This is my first MM, so we are in the Kirkfell class, if youfind us, I look just like my avatar, they might be a Scottish flag on our tent,despite me not being Scottish, (asylum seeker from England). I might have somespare food.

What a good weekend eh? No rain except when we were safe in our tents, no wind, hardly any midges, & some of the best mountain running anywhere. Congratulations Karen - brilliant Klets result.
Ta. So So So happy it stayed good weather- suspect I might have had a nightmare in the cold and wet. Loved it! Thanks to the guys I kept meeting up with, good company and motivated me to keep running and keep up several times just by being there. Good to catch up with lots of friends

Yesterday was lovely - so lovely we interupted a couple, ahem, in flagrante, ahem, by Burnmoor Tarn. We were likely the first through there (early start on Bowfell) so sorry for ruining the show for the rest of you!
Glad the weather cooled a bit today though - I tend to do OK in heat but my partner doesn't. We managed to turn the 26min deficit of day 1 (too much bimbling!) into a 27sec deficit today. I was hammering it but the winners got going again just before my partner could get to them - well done Lewis and The Ent (as you're students we let you have the free beer!)

Well done Karan, I had a great two days I really enjoyed myself in what must have been near ideal conditions.
The high light of many high lights and laughs me and my partner Nigel had over the weekend was running into Joss Naylor above Greendale Tarn,there he was running along with his two collies in his bent forward style, we stopped and had a chat with him and I am sure he would have chatted all day if we had stayed.
I must apologise to any forum members that encounter me on the course, I was wearing a red InoV8 hat and fluorescent yellow tee shirt on day one and a blue one on day two, I was the very enthusiastic one telling jokes and singing very badly, Ain’t no Mountain high enough, ain’t, no valley wide enough ain’t, no river deep enough to keep me from that check point. Or the Hills are alive with the sound of music, Climb every mountain and, The Only way is up.
Sorry if I got on anybody’s nerves :o

As we were approaching Scoat Tarn today we had a bit of a madness singalong, including a bit of a skank.
Are you the cheery chappie who we got lost with near Buckbarrow and had to turn back. Your Scottish mate knew a shortcut after the farm which wasn't a short cut at all? And who lead us over the swamp towards camp on day 1 when really we should have taken the forest track? And hurtled down Rough Crag yelling 'I love descending'??? If so, great to meet you!Quote:

If it was you I can now put a face to a name, since I was to-ing and fro-ing with you for most of the second half of day 2. You'd been a lot quicker than me on day 1 though.

It's a pity that the organisers won't use routegadget, it's be good to know whether any of our less popular route choices were any good or not.
Did anyone else on Bowfell opt for the climbers traverse round Gable instead of Windy Gap? What routes did people choose from 3 to 4 on day 2 (we went up to the Haycock rodge and then back down, which I think was good as we were overtaken by some of the same people on the way to 5 as had overtaken us earlier in the day).
Did anyone findthe vaguely suicidal-looking planners route to the last control on day 2, straight down the craggy hillside from Red Pike? We went for the scree run down Black Comb and gained about 10 minutes on the others in front of us who went for Wind Gap :)
Bit of a nightmare for me. Decent start on Klets on day one, but slipped going up over Pillar and gave my foot a right bash (not to mention my left buttock). Carried on for a bit, but it was too painful to manage for the rest of the weekend, so had a rather dejected hobble back to the event centre.
Well done to one and all - sounds like you enjoyed your first MM a bit too much Tahr! Well done Rydell I'll take you up on that offer of a pint sometime - after mountain trial maybe? U know you want to!
Im well chuffed to have come out on top - I fear more by luck than design. You kept me hanging in there through a rough patch Bill J. I must confess that as I got slightly ahead of you going up to the 2nd to last sheepfold, as you bared right behind me - (way to early!) - I felt smug about you and a load more runners heading up the wrong stream... ha ha - schoolboy error I thought, Fools! they must be tired and blindly following each other. .... oh ... hang on a minute .... I cant have done... SH*T!...... its me whos marked up the sheepfold 1km to the north by mistake. Time for a detour! I should have stuck with you!! That was one of several similar errors over the two days - still loved it though!
From my discussions with people there was a mixed reaction to the new format. I quite liked it as a change - a lot of factors to consider and really important to see the best strategy from the off or you were pretty much out of the game.
Toreador- leave the route gaget issue with me and i will ask. Dave J , the organiser, is in our orienteering club so I will see what is possible. Lots is changing with the SLMM - torches, Klets etc so perhaps they will be able to use it.
Thanks to Tahr, Nee Bother and Bill for their congratulations- you have no idea how scared i was earlier in the weak when the forecasts were so rubbish. I think in wet windy weather I wouldhave struggled. Suspect it was also slightly easier tis year? (but I am stll very pleased and might have another go). Nice to make so many new friends. Great atmosphere as always. Someone asked about sack weights- i got mine down to 5.5kg and I guess I could have shaved off more by leaving out the long sleeved thermal, spare undies and socks and a bit of food.

The Bowfell course was definitely easier than usual - possibly an over-correction after last year? We still managed to be slower though!

Torreador - we went round the climber's path to 2 on Day 1. Lost 4mins to Jonny and Lewis who went over Windy Gap, but I reckon it was maybe 10mins slower but missing the descent on the other side saved our legs.
We also took a direct line out of 2, over the Band before contouring into the corridor route. Again we lost 2 mins to the above pair, but reckon this was mainly once we were on the corridor route.
27 seconds split us at the end of day 2 - although Jonny marking #5 1km south of where it actually was on their maps made it a bit more of an exciting finish than it should have been!
Day 2 leg 4 - linked the cols together before swinging a bit north after Pots of Ashness to miss the grey contours, then contoured underneath grey on Blackbeck KNotts before ascending Black Beck.
Leg 6 - 32mins, fairly necky route as well, just south of Black Combe.
Thinking about Klets next year (although I am pants at score and 'tactics'). Whether I'll go hard or go home I don't know yet!
Etak and I went via Wind Gap in 39 minutes (she very kindly waited for me twice, first to vomit and second to empty stones from my shoes). We thought about black comb and the planners wall route off the summit of red pike but in the cloud we opted for the route we knew.Quote:

Our team contribution to the mountain sing-along was "Bring me sunshine" when rain was looking a bit likely - it worked! Great weather - I even got a bit sunburnt! Did think the Harter course was a bit "easy" on the first day - the climb up the side of Yewbarrow excepted! - but the terrain was a bit more interesting on the second day! Thoroughly enjoyable as always, so thanks to planners, organisers, helpers etc etc :)

I guess one of the reasons I was able to enjoy myself somuch was because me and my partner are at different levels, although he has done many MMs I am a little quicker so I was never out my comfort zone.

However my partner for this one as well as being very experienced in MM he is as least as fast and fit as me if not fitter and very competitive,you might find me crying not laughing next time. :thunbdown:

Weight of sack is always a difficult one for me. I hate being cold or hungry and feel I have to pack for worst case scenario.
Without long sleeve thermal, spare undies, spare socks, tiny mirror for contact lenses, neo air, a tiny extra bit of food just in case, thinner lighter over trousers, less pain killers I am not sure what i could have left out. Total I might have saved could be about 500g, but at what cost IF it had been cold and wet?? (oh , could have run in longs on day 1 and so not carried any for kit requirements so saved another 140g) Did leave out silk sleeping bag liner- which is why I woke up chilly at 3am perhaps
We're doing the RAB too so I'll look (sorry listen) out for you!! I'll bring some hankies for the tears!
I'm convinced Black Comb was the quickest, as on that leg we're in the top 25% rather than the bottom 25% as on all the rest! Our other choices were probably about equal at best - but we enjoyed them which is the main thing at our level :)Quote:
