Food for two for us would typically be:
2 x cous cous
2 x super noodles
1 x instant mash
Maybe a smoked sausage or some slices of chorizo
custard powder (to have with any left over day 1 chocolate bars
2 or 3 x Oatso Simple for morning
Day food is individual choice (usually chocolate bars) but I also take 2 x Re-Go for overnight camp which my partner tends not to.
I'm sure you can get 300g sleeping bags (although I use a 700g one as I can't be bothered forking out more cash atm, and I like being warm. Once I stop messing about on the B class I'll invest in some lighter kit)
cup AND a pan? Unwarranted luxury Hank! either get a slightly bigger (titanium) cup which you can then use as a small pan at overnight, or take a small plastic bottle for dipping in streams.
Ha! Yes, the plastic mug is a minor luxury, but I find it more practical in that it's dead easy to dip in a stream on the move (no faffing with bottle-top, etc), have a few swigs and chuck the rest. I suppose I could invest in a titanium mug that I could cook in too, but it's mega bucks for a real minor weight saving. Plus, I'd have to clean the thing out properly before morning coffee. I know of someone who doesn't carry a spoon and uses the baseplate of their compass to eat with. Minimal.Quote:

I remember my first MM at the Saunders in 2009 carrying all sorts of food, including apples, and my old Vapour Rise top just to wear in camp... on top of waterproofs and a warm layer. In the middle of July. What was I thinking? Also had 3l of water in two bladders strapped to my pack for me and the missus. Reckon I must've be lugging round a good 10kg or more.
You gents were right, I tried putting my sleeping bag inside the Bivi-bag and it got damp, not massively but it did never the less. I think I will put it under my sleeping mat. The organisers say no problem using the RAB Storm Bivi instead of a plastic survival bag. I have two more big runs planed then taper down for next weekend.

Looks like it might be a bit chilly come the weekend. I've put my thermal undercrackers on standby.
Forecast is a bit confused at the mo....one the one hand says cold...low single figures Sat night , on the detail it says rain and medium single figures, cloudy...you pays your money etc...
Think I'd choose cold and clear rather than wet and warm. Chances are it'll be wet and cold, worst of both.

Good luck to all playing out this weekend on this. Mr RTS spent all evening last night cooking up a winter nutritional masterpiece for it :-). Butternut squash risotto with honey baked almond flakes for the main (it is currently on it's 5th hour of dehydration). Thanks Daz the slug for the instruction on how it's done ;-). followed by chocolate biscuit cake for Saturday night camp out. With crunch granola for Sunday's get up and go! All home made from scratch. I don't do the cooking in our house ;-).
It's his first OMM so he is doing B class, but his team mate has done several. I'm hoping to get there for the end to cheer him and everyone else in.

4.0kg but I've got to add tent poles & gas canister yet. And decide whether to upgrade to a Goretex waterproof. And find out what a "wound dressing" is and add two of them. 9.9kg is definitely over the top. Chuck every other item back in the wardrobe...

as to pen and paper , I would agree OHT permanent pens best, red or orange. I do have some waterproof paper so may put a sheet in.
We get a sheet of paper with control descriptions on don't we? That's what I always count as "paper".
I never use a pen on the OMM as the maps are pre-marked, but I guess will have to pack one anyway.
If you're on a line course (E,A etc.) you won't need to write on the map. I just stick a post-it and a tiny pencil in my first aid kit.
I'm dragging a mountain marathon virgin round the Elite course which should be fun/interesting.
Aiming for about 4kg each pack weight.
I can never remember the differences between the different MMs. I'll dump my OHP pen & pack my 1 inch pencil stub instead.Quote:

The rest is just one-of-everything on the list. A lot of my stuff is via eBay and is a few seasons old, but serviceable, so not the lightest + most current.
I have all the food(1600g, lunch, dinner, breakfast and tea/coffee/biscuits), and stove(MSR superfly, but I have got 220g gas as we'll be in camp from 14:00 to 08:00 next day), and my mate the tent.
In fairness I'll probably be wearing the midlayer and waterproofs at 07:00 saturday, until we get going and warm up, so that will knock the best part of 1kg off
Spatcher - a 'wound dressing' is usually whats also called a shell dressing or sometimes an ambulance dressing. Its a crepe bandage with an absorbent pad on it about 6" from one end. They come rolled up in sealed/sterile packets, you unroll the short end, apply the pad to the 'wound' and wrap the rest of the longer end around the whole thing to secure it. They work best on something like a long gash on a limb. If blood leaks through dont take it off, you just apply another on top.Quote:

Will a 100 or a 125g canister really not do? Last year in the Rab I used a bit less than 40g (solo), so I took the same canister this year, and despite having some very long burns on Sunday morning due to the cold temps and my failing to keep the gas warm, it still has 20g left. That's with a pocket rocket, using a bit of foil instead of a lid, and a bit more foil as a rubbish windbreak.Quote:

Bags packed and ready to go!! Looks like it's going to be cold overnight so I've opted for a slightly heavier/warmer sleeping bag than usual, which has pushed the pack weight up to 5kg, all squashed into a 22l sac.
We're competing in the Medium Score, off just before 10 so aiming for overnight camp at 4 - save us a good spot! With a combined age of 116 we're looking to do well in the Vets handicap.

Aye, looks like being cold overnight. I've not packed yet. Definitely going to pack something extra for camp, but not decided whether it'll be another base-layer, silk sleeping-bag liner or a heavier down top. I've not used a silk liner before... do they add much warmth? I'm thinking for the weight I might be better off with something specifically for my upper body.Quote:

Doesn't sound that cold overnight (compared to the RAB) - the rain's due to arrive before midnight and keep the frost away. Met Office currently say +4 minimum, +7 by dawn, so I'm risking my minimus...
Agree Toredador. Earlier this week I was worried but the cold weather seems to be Fri night and Sat day time, with cloud and some rain by Sunday. So perhaps not so cold on sun am, at least no colder than the RAB. So now I have to decide- tiny bag and silk liner plus ALL my clothes or heavier, bulkier but warmer bag? hmmm
I intend to get to the event centre quite early on Sunday to see the front runners come in. Mr RTS got his sack down to 7kg without sacrificing much so he is happy. Hope to see some of you at the finish. I'll be the one cheering EVERYONE in. Good luck :-)

Looks like I'm not going to be running - had a cold bug all week, tried a short test run at lunchtime and I'm just not up to it. Gutted. My pack's glaring disappointedly at me from beside the door.
