Wasn't able to do Moel Elio so might do this instead. Any one done this race and recommend it? Does it need to be recced or can you just wing it?
Thanks
For what it's worth - did this race last year for the first time - follow the crowd. It's we marshalled / marked so no reccy required.
It was a great race with fantactic view from the top (I like a race where you can see (more / less) not only the start and the finish, but also the whole of Cardingan Bay! The main hazard was the decending leaders (while I was still working my way up), but you even got a sweetie at the top. Plus, a big start / finish in the town centre.:D
Crowhill
Gaz is going and he has done it a couple of times so you might get some info off him. I would be there but have business on Jura
WP
I'm gonna have a bash at this - is it an up and down route like Snowdon? Full kit?
Details here.

How do Crowhill, nice race but it does have a bit of road and trail at the start and finish, enough to make your teeth rattle in your head when going back down to the village. I would say no recce needed for this one, plenty of runners and ok for an experienced runner. Really great atmosphere as there is a drum troupe playing in centre of village, makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up!
I would offer you a lift but will have all the family as we are staying up on Anglesey for a week (will try and talk joanne into standing around so I can do Carneddau the following saturday, I live in hope!!!).
Couple of us from Calder there last year but not many so might see you there.
With regards
Gaz
When you get onto the final climb, there are some lines away from the path which can save you time. Great day out especially if you don't know Mid Wales.
took a few iffy routes on the way up and especially down, got a few looks of fellow descenders but didnt get pointed out in the results or race write up so watch out wales............:p :p
Its a nice day out. A bit of a boring slog compared to some races but the views make up for it and so does the atmosphere in the town. The road section is especially tedious for those of us with tarmac allergy. No recce needed.
GW..oh its up and down alright
have done this for the last 2 years first year crap weather, last year brilliant conditions
starts with a steady climb on the road out of Dolgellau which gets steep in a couple of places. then leave the cader road to run round the lake to the foot of the mountain proper. then its a nearly relentless climb to the top which is very rocky. there is not much route choice as the path zig-zags up the side of the hill. once you reach the top which is just a jagged mountain top...admire the views if its a clear day...then turn round get of the really rocky bit to the path and then take the brakes off. same way back down apart from cutting a few corners off the zig-zags, which is very steep but saves some time. run back round the lake with legs like jelly and then try and run fast down the cader road back into the town square past all the spectators
MUCH recommended...had an entry but am not risking it after just getting over the injury
I would agree with Graham. Not such an interesting route as other races, but a great day out.
If you feel stable in trails, then yes, go for those. The road bit knacks yer walshies anyway!
Anyone doing it do come and say 'hello' to me. I'll be in my burgundy dorking and mole valley vest. Race no................................1
(dead keen super early entry!) And i'll have to get up super early for the drive up on saturday morning. Sure it'll be a great day. :)

Anyone know if there will be any photos available on the cader-race site? They don't seem to exist at the moment. Must admit I don't remember seeing a photographer. I have seen Alastairs photos on pixmania tho. Had I known someone was taking my photo i'm sure I could've looked a bit speedier!
Anyone thinking of doing this?

It's a 10.5 mile fell race up Cader Idris in North Wales.
How good would your navigating skills have to be? I've not done a race with map and compass yet.
It seems to be marshalled most of the way.
Any advice from people that have done it before?
Cheers.
:p
Ps. I'm not junior! Don't know why it's saying that.
the use of a map and compass are the least of your worries with this race
after a start of a short(ish) uphill road section and a trot around a lake....the route then goes uphill.....a lot  to the top of the chair of Idris (Cader)...where you can admire the views, if the weather is clear...before turning around and attempting free fall...with minimal ground contact...back down to Llyn Gwernan (lake) and back down the road to a rapturous applause in Dolgellau main square
Hard (if the weathers crap) race......but Brilliant :D:D:D
Amber,
I've done this a few times and on each occasion no navigational skills required and I'm sure in the event of bad weather and mist the route is pretty staight forward (won't say obvious as that is tempting fate!!). Agree with SS with regards to the freefall route back to the lake, only problem is I've usually given it all to get back to the lake and forgetting about the longish run on the roads back to the village:eek:.
Onwards and Upwards
Gaz
Good race this one.
When you hit the flat after the big descent your legs go.
I managed to make another 6 places up from the bottom of the descent to the finish.
Cracking atmosphere when i did it, steel band banging away:D
Right, I'm in then. :D
Still worried I might get lost though.
Thanks everyone! ;)
I will get lost. I'm a girl, it's what we do.
I can get lost in a supermarket carpark trying to find my car.
It says there is a cut off point of 1 hour 15 from the start to the pony path on the ascent. Does anyone know how far that is?
Bearing in mind this will all be uphill, is this a hard time to achieve?
There are people on the results from last year taking 3.5 hours, so 1 hour 15 to get half way seems quite quick?? Is this cut off time a new thing?
Cheers. :D
dropped my entry in the post yesterday - looking forward to it already :D
High Cup Nick for me this weekend, then thinking of Ras yr Aran in March as a good way to kick off my training
I ran cader in 2008 and reached the cut off point 55mins but still finished 2hrs 42ish not last
GO for it great atmosphere in the town
you wont get lost, most ly road and track to start and then laidstone
path and some scree near the top
canbe dodgy coming down
malcolm
Ran this one last year-lovely day, great atmosphere in the town-like other found the final road section tough-it's longer than you think-so worth saving a bit for the end.
Do people run up it the whole way?
I'm sure I'll need a sneaky walk now and then. :p
Can't really see me legging it up there without walking some of the route up, but I'm scared I'll get binned for being over 1 hour 15. :(
I'll run down!! :D
Hi Amber
Just to give you an idea... my 10 flat time was 1.15 and I did Cader in 2.11 Completely ran out of steam at the end though as it's surprising how far it is back to the town. One of the best races i've ever done. Don't think i'm doing it this year as it clashes with our club 10m :( You should definately do it - it's a GREAT place for a weekend break
Ooooooh.....that means I'll take about 3.5 hours then!! :D
As long as I finish, and don't get binned at the 1 hour 15 point. :(
Got 3 months to do loads of hills.
Thanks everyone! :)
