Hmmm - yet more Christmas trees required?
Last call to see if anyone fancies joining me for a recce tomorrow. Probably from Crowden & probably at the car park below the hostel from 9am.
Hi Sam there are a few of us doing the whole route from Marsden on our traditional Christmas recce! Starting at 7.30ish so should be at Crowden around 9. We will be slow though!
If I get myself to sleep shortly, I may well see you at Crowden or catch you up (optimistic!) at some point on the route. Hopefully be at Crowden car park from 9am (little silver van with orange light on top)
Cheers, glad you had a good un!
Aborted recce yesterday as blizzard conditions hit on Wain Stones - at least managed to look at both Pennine Way & Wildboar Clough as possible routes (latter preferable, though I'll likely be trying to hit Pennine Way sooner than I did.
Sort of recce today from Edale - undecided as to best way off Kinder.
Will be doing final recce on Friday 2nd January, probably from Snake Pass to final CP & then up as far as Wain Stones, via Higher Shelf trig, to try to get a idea of routes. As before, if anyone is keen then please get in touch.
Another bump - if anyone fancies joining me for a recce on Friday 2nd, please do get in touch. Open to going from either Crowden or Snake Pass, probably going as far as Kinder Downfall whichever way I go.
Quite a lot of snow covering the route at the moment so allow extra time for reccying. rain forecast for NY day and milder but I feel the snow will linger.
The new CP at Kinder Low provides interesting route choices for the run to the finish! What's your
plan?
To stay on the fell until well after Grindslow Knoll, and enjoy a day out on the fell.
I am assuming it is still a 'fell' race and has not been re-classified as 'trail'.
Going out Tuesday or Wednesday next week if any one wants a last look.
Ian - might join you, depending on how I get on tomorrow! Which section are you planning?
Andy could go any where as long as I go over Kinder. either from Edale or Snake whatever is easiest
Just after Crowden, where is the best place to take photos because EVERYBODY will take that particular route?
Half way up Lawrence Edge. PM Ian Darkpeak for a grid reference.
well nearly EVERYONE.
Try at the top of the fence corner as you get crowden and the reservoirs in the back ground. It's where I was last year.
my album from last year from that point...young Mr Mann in the shot below

I'm sure you will do it more justice Steve
There are three main route choices, if you want to photo as many as possible it would be better to head up to SK 07299 99634. On the path down from the quarry before the runners hit Crowden. If you were there for 60- 70 mins after the start you should catch most folk.
Snap IDP!
The average winning time for the last 3 years has been 3 hours 15ish which is 10 minute mileing if that any use to you. I took a few snaps last year at Leyzing clough / Winter Clough and they were still quite bunched up. https://www.flickr.com/photos/980116...7639683507565/
So, going to try and get a quick look at PW down from Kinder and weigh up Crowden Tower, but with the weather as it is, and looking, may just stay on the path and avoid the Bog Monsters (there was one chasing me at Grin n Bear It this year...might still be hunting me)...There was talk of an extra CP at Kinder Low area, is this likely? I would like to think that we would all respect the wishes of the National Trust and stay off the Kinder Gates (one years' inconvenience for the sake of the future of the race - not a big ask), but a CP would ensure it, whilst still giving Fell option across to Grindslow...
Somebody mentioned in an earlier post that he was going to email nicky to find it this was possible (avoiding the wool packs) but nothing has ever appeared either here or on the race website. I just don't know if this is allowed or we have to head directly south from kinder low end to join the edge path and then either follow that the whole way to Crowden Tower or head down to the bottom of Jacob's Ladder.
Can we do a straight line from Kinder Low end to the BOTTOM of Jacob's ladder?
Can somebody clarify this?
As I understand it unless there is a hard frost - and I imagine it would have to be incredibly hard, that there will be a check-point on Kinder Low so that there is no benefit in not using the path.
After that runners are expected to use the Pennine Way to either turn left along the skyline path to get to Crowden Tower or head to the top of Jacob's ladder. There is no mention of any restrictions about short-cuts round the woolpacks - I believe the work was done here a year or so ago.
I am assuming that the Kinder Low checkpoint will be mandatory and that we will all have to run as far as the main junction between Pennine Way and the Skyline path at Swines Back.
Met Office forecasting snow in Edale on Saturday night at 1•c. Given that it tends to be a good degree or so colder up on Kinder, there's probably a good chance of it settling on the tops. However, rain is forecast everyday, except Thursday, this week. Certainly going to make for interesting running on Bleaklow!
Which route do people take to get from Crowden towards Lawrence Edge. Looking at parking for photo taking.
There's a path from the road crossing at Crowden that leads to a bridge across the outflow of Woodhead reservoir and then up to the B6105 and the Longdendale Trail. There is a small parking space not far from there where the trail comes close to the bend on the B6105 just over the dam from the A628.
**Lift opportunity**
I have a couple of spare seats in a minibus leaving Sheffield early Sunday morning going to Marsden. Depart 6am Dore railway station / 6:20am Hillsborough park. £10 single journey.
PM me if interested.
3 days of hard frost is looking unlikely now, so I suppose Kinder Low End is it then!
Cold wet and windy, albeit with good visibility appears to be the order of the day.
