She's off again: https://live.opentracking.co.uk/sowjune2021/
Might as well have a double BG while we're here: https://live.opentracking.co.uk/ebdbg21/ He's going well! Good conditions for it today.
It's bloody hot in N.Wales today, how is it in the Lakes ?
She's going impressively so far, hope she can hold the schedule.
Is the official Wainwright for 'Whinlatter' actually at the far end, at the 517m point ?
If so, I've only done 173 of them, not 174 !
Careful Now - Indeed the Wainwright is 'Brown How' at the western end of the ridge. And it's not the only top that could be debated :).
More than half way round, and a mere 14 hours ahead of schedule. Did someone say that it takes at least 6 days to do the Wainwrights?
After pulling out something like 13hrs on her schedule, it's slightly closing up again (7-8hrs)
That section she's about to do across to and over Hen Comb can be grim. Might be relatively ok due to the dry weather.
I think this is partly down to having a break in Borrowdale last night. On her target schedule she'd have passed straight through in the daytime, whereas last night she arrived at 10pm and took a couple of hours break, so 'lost' that time. I haven't done the maths, but I assume the target schedule is the record, so she's looking very strong for breaking it. Incredible stuff.
She's been consistently a few minutes up on splits across the Buttermere fells this morning. This is still the interesting point in the round though where it could start sliding.
There is a John Kelly round mooted over the summer as well.
I think I'm right in saying that her schedule is 1hr up on the record, and she's now ~8hrs up on that, so ~9hr on the record. Were she to stay where she is in relation to her schedule (big if, I know), she should finish around 0400 on Thursday and a finish anytime before 1300 would be the record. Of course there's scope for her slowing down significantly and she must be suffering, but she's in a great position with a decent buffer. Her schedule suggests no significant break after Ennerdale, though I guess that will probably be deferred to Wasdale. Hell of a last leg to the end then!
Re. John Kelly, that seems inevitable (and exciting).
About to hit the scafells, 4.75h up on her schedule. Banked a bit of rest early this morning. Hard to tell off the first couple of splits of the day what the trend is but looked OK between Whin and Illgill.
One last 'sprint' round Upper Eskdale, Duddon, Coniston and Little Langdale!
Does look like she's lost a few minutes on each of the last couple of splits to Slight Side and Scafell. The next section will be tricky as well as I suspect it's wet up there right now and those boulders must be pretty bleak with a couple of hundred(!) miles in your legs.
Just noticed that she's got what looks like a ~3hr break scheduled in the Duddon valley. Assuming she doesn't use all that (she'll be there maybe 2100) she'll get back some time on the schedule.
Don't know what she had at Hardknott but she's just taken a fair chunk out her schedule up to Harter Fell. ~4hrs up on the record now and presumably she'll add a bit more to that with a shorter stop at Duddon. Pure speculation based on watching the dot, but I think she's maybe struggling more on the descents and going well on the climbs.
You can of course train on downhill sections to become resistant to this eccentric damage, but I doubt whether this resistance extends to extreme events like a BG, or, in particular, 214 Wainwrights.
I once had to take a break of several weeks from running hills because of an injury - on my first "comeback" hilly run I ground to a complete halt because of quad pain on a long downhill section of a Lakeland trail event. A week later I did the Y3Ps - no problems whatsoever.
Looking like under six days is in the bag outstanding well done Sabrina
Tracker lost contact halfway down, but now looks like she finished at 0652, which would, I think, be 5 days 23hrs 51mins. Amazing.
Edit: looks like the confirmed time is 5 days 23 hours 49 minutes (too early for maths).
Amazing stuff. Wainwrights seems to have grasped a lot of people's attention this year with multiple attempts in different styles. 4 attempts for Sabs, shows that she knew she could do it, but also the ability to recover from 1 full round (last year) and getting to day 4 a few weeks ago - when you consider how broken it left Steve and Paul, her powers of recovery are astonishing.
Huge congratulations!
Interesting Tweet from Steve Birkinshaw:
Sabrina's Wainwright record stats:
total=144hr, moving=129hr, resting=15hr (~6 hours sleep)
Paul T (previous record):
total=150hr, moving=113hr, resting=37hr.
Sabs has the amazing physical and mental toughness to keep moving with very little sleep/rest.
Extraordinary. I watched last night and saw her move on from Duddon quickly , around 11:30pm, I knew then that she was looking for the sub-6 days.
It's even on the BBC site now: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cumbria-57509297
Following his own run, Steve blogged:
Joss 125 moving 44 resting
Steve 115 moving 42 resting
Interestingly, Steve's plan had been to rest only 25 hrs, allowing him to beat Joss's time while moving less quickly.
Looking at the 4 runs, Sabrina's moving:resting ratio is an amazing step change.
I am halfway through Sabrina's book "Where There's a Hill" - an excellent read. Is there no end to her talents? Highly recommended.
