All good, very well organised and friendly event but too much road and fast running... I was praying for a steep hill that I'd have the excuse to walk up. Suffered a bit with dodgy guts but managed to keep bang on 7 hour schedule throughout and got home in 6:56.
I think a lot of people feel the same way about this run - off-roader runners anyway. Not enough grass, not enough mud, not enough hills. Too many stony tracks and too much tarmac. I'll still be having another go next year though. I was aiming to get under 8 hours, & did 7:45. I reckon if I'd have tapered properly beforehand & hadn't had gut problems I could have done 7:30, so I've got a target for next year now. Good run doing 6:56 though!Quote:

Loads of kids aren't soft- mine ( and a number of others) have started doing MMs with me SLMM this year and Phoenix Long O and I know the elder has his eye on the LAMM or OMM
and before the child protection starts- you couldn't make them do what they don't want to, especially the youngest!!

DofE there was a thread about this earlier in the year.
they are given a mininmum kit list but then they fill up with extra stuff,
a lot is to do with Parents looking after little Jonny put in that extra jumper etc
I made one group pack there backs and bring them to school. they turned up with 65-80l sacks!!!! we then emptied about 40% of the kit out as superflous.
I did warn them it would be warm the next day and have enough liquid.
When they turned up one had refilled his 75lt sack AND brought a suitcase.
another girl was really struggling mid day so I offered to take som weight out of her sack. I could barely lift it. there were 2x 2l coke bottles in there as well as the water we had handed out at the start!!
It's all experience!
Hiya all, this was my 3rd attempt. Failed the previous 2 as a walker, so decided to give it a go as a runner and feared slightly better finishing in a time of 7h30m28s.
I couldnt have been more pleased with my effort.
Does anyone know if those pictures from the dip have materialised?

Thanks for the photo link, nik. There are some good ones there. The photographer had long gone by the time I dragged myself through. I posted my belated report this evening with pictures. Happy reading all. I'm better now, by the way :)
Just got my entry in for this September event. Does anyone have the grid refs of checkpoints or a map of the route? I've gone and followed the course on the OL maps as best I can based on Steve Temple's excellent 2004 account (from the Hayfield races website) but any more information would be much appreciated! :D
I can email you the 2008 instructions to competitors - any changes for 2010 will be minor I should think. It's always been more or less the same route, give or take the odd disputed right of way. Send me your email address - I can't see any way of sending it to you without.Quote:

I managed a bit of a detour around Litton Mill and I'd recced it.
I don't remember seeing lots of arrows and did go wrong at the mill. Also would have gone wrong in several other places except for the company I had. I'mm all for decent weather but hope it not quite so warm this year
Having a go this year - be my third attempt at getting to the start line, missed it twice due to injury. The organiser has allowed my entry to run on twice, how good is that. No time to reccie so i hope the arrows are in place this year or i will be getting lost.

I too have had to withdraw and very happy for someone to pick up my number. I contacted the organisers via their website a week or so ago to notify them but have heard nothing back. I am hoping they will allow me to transfer over to next year unless one of you picks up my number?
