I know Gordale Scar is not too bad
You know Gordale Scar is not too bad
but if I were to show Lady Slugge this pic:
http://www.malhamdale.com/images/goredale5.jpg
I know she would laugh in my face
NOT telling her in advance is also not an option if I want to retain my nadgers!
Falcon Flyer it is then!
I understand where you're coming from Daz, nearly lost my nadgers again after taking the Missus round the Surrey Tops last weekend
it seems I underestimated the Good Lady Slugge! :o
I showed her the pic and she seemed remarkably unphased by it
(although she did say that she wouldn't countenance coming DOWN that way)
so the Malhamdale Meander is back on! :D
Spoke to Malhamdale organiser (nice bloke) and there are still plenty of places, so booked cottage in Kettlewell
Lady Slugge & I have never done much further than Half Mara, so should be interesting! :D
I think we're going to have a trot round again this year Daz so hope to see you and Lady Slugge there. It's an deal first long event as very low-key and friendly with mainly walkers and family groups. Kettlewell is a lovely base for a weekend in the Dales too!
Derby Tup - I see from your Location that it would be almost rude of you not to do such a local event!
This will be our first LDWA Challenge event - any newbie mistakes we should avoid...? :o
I might have a wander round the Black Mountain roundabout on Saturday, if I haven't fallen apart again by then. I have to start again somewhere
Lady Slugge & I just got out confirmation/numbers for Malhamdale Meander (37 & 38 from memory)
I've got map/checkpoints, but
does anybody know if/when we get given a route description (presumably at registration?)...?
Daz, I'm sure you get route instructions at registration, which is in a nice traditional village hall. It's not difficult to follow anyway. Much more importantly I clearly remember fantastic home-made cakes at the finish and a nice pub directly opposite the finish!
Thanks DT, you mean this pub?:

mmmm... cakes and puuuuub...
Back from the BMR, nothing broken and went far beter than I ever have anticipated. Even met Juicers 'better half'. Confidence restored, illness over, and time to enjoy the months ahead :)
Brill - well done Moley! Nothing like "getting back into it" is there?
Well done Molehill. I forgot how much climbing was involved, came as a bit of a shock on Saturday. The last climb was a killer.
So then...I'm now to be known as "Juicer's better half"!!;)
Nice to meet you Moley, enjoyed having a run and chat with you. You were going really well.
Did you enjoy "taking it easy" then Matt? You came flying past us Newport lads!! It was a bit better underfoot than Calderdale wasn't it?!?
I must be the only one who enjoyed that hill at 20 miles!! Had a bit of cramp (due to footwear) coming down the road before the CP so had 5-10mins to gain on the Newport group on the climb - which I duly did. All those long hills runs this winter HAVE made a difference:)
Smashing event, lovely hills, great vast moors. I fancy this again. And next year, I WON'T think it's a good idea to go due west off Waun Fach across ankle-breaking steep ground:D
Was a good day 1470, nice to meet you. I was very pleased to survive in one piece, a bit aching next day but had a ride and walk. Who was that walker bloke up with us - he couldn't half cover the ground .
Felt ok at the road so decided to give the last section a blast and see what happened, went well and finished that bit in 1.25 to the finish - couple of mins under 51/2 hours overall (I started a bit late), about 3/4 hour up on what I'd have settled for. No complaints and nice to see the course in good weather, I'll know which way to go next year ;).
Hi DazTheSlug and LadyS,
I'll probably wander up to Malhamdale Meander tomorrow to have a go. It would be good to make your acquaintance. Are you going on the later 09:30 start?
I've done this event once before in 2005, and really enjoyed it. It was 26 miles then, now shortened to 23. On speaking to the organiser this week I learned that the modification was to remove a boring slog towards the end (though I don't remember that).
I'm planning on coming up to Malhamdale tomorrow as well - the organiser said there plenty of places left. Depends on how I feel when my alarm goes off tomorrow morning, going to be an early start to get there to register in time!
Malhamdale -
Cracking route, cracking weather, cracking chilli at the end, which more than made up for crack of dawn alarm clock!
Goredale Scar really made the route, coming up the gorge, swinging around to the right and finding yourself in that cove with the waterfall to scramble up, great!
I was a little panicked by the lack of any sort of route description at the start, but needn't have been as it wasn't too hard to follow the route.
First sunburn of the year, even through all that high cloud.
Malhamdale duly meandered - a glorious route and, yep, I got a bit of a suntan too. Gordale scar wasn't a surprise to me as I've been up loads of times but from speaking to one runner at the end you'd think he's climbed the north face of the Eiger :D.
Agree Steve it was cracking! Did you set off at 9.30? If you did, must have seen you, but didn't know who you are. Good to meet Stolly and AJF (of the small world variety!)
I was really pleased my feet and legs survived - I can put the nightmare of the Woldsman behind me! Part of the route was the same as the hundred so that's saved me some recce!
I had to wait 15 minutes to get to Goredale scar. There were 2 people who would never be able to climb the North face of the Eiger - quite painful to watch actually! But it was the only down side of a brill day.
Was a fun day out! Great to meet you socks and yes it is a VERY small world, cheers for the lift. def return the favor soon hopefully.
Great course and a great run round with stolly. Will go running round there a lot more in future. Feel like I have missed a trick by going off piste in other areas.
Yes, I was on the 9:30 start, not knowing who anyone was! Just sent off for a pony vest so should be more recognisable next time.
I think the Eiger has been climbed faster than some of the walkers took to get up that little waterfall, I didn't have to wait as long as 15 minutes but it seemed a long time!
It was good to meet you for the first time Stolly and AJF, and to remake your acquaintance Socks. Sorry I didn't knowingly get to talk to you SteveS.
I agree the Malhamdale Meander was a beautiful route and the weather was brill - second sun tan of the year (first was at Three Peaks). I was glad to get a bit more speed back after my woeful Three Peaks performance, though I was still feeling the effects of the ankle-twisting that occurred at PPP. (I mentioned speed but that's relative. All you other forumites were way too fast for me. Well run.
It did feel like I was the only person out there for a time. I passed some walkers just after Parson's Pulpit, and other than the next marshal didn't see a soul until the approach to Weet's Hill. Felt like I was the only person out there for a while, so good to have all that expanse of land to yourself.
I found the 15 mile sign near Clapham High Mark a bit bizarre, a flourescent yellow road race like sign in the middle of the dales, with no roads or houses in sight!
I almost wish I was doing the 100 in a few weeks time to get back up that way.
sounds like a good forum turn-out at Malhamdale
Lady Slugge & I did the 9:30 start too, but we were right at the back
our first ever LDWA Challenge event, but I'll be surprised if we ever do one that is much better than this
superbly designed route to show off unfettered views of the Dales in all directions at all times!
neither of us had ever done more than a half-mara distance before - Lady Slugge had a bad patch after Malham Tarn, but perked up in the latter stages
whereas I just ground to a halt after about 18 miles - still enjoyed the last 5, but VERY slow
Many Thanks to the organiser and those manning the check-points
good weather, sun-tan, chilli and beer - WHAT A DAY! :)
just had an email reply from Alan Brignell, the RO for Peaker's Stroll (Jul.6th)
apparently, runners are welcome on all routes :D
with slower "jogger" type runners (i.e. me & Lady Slugge!) welcome to start with the walkers at 9:30am,
but faster "runner" runners starting at 11:30am
<excellent_smithers>
Just been having a look at the Nine Edges event in September
looks a superb route
anybody done it before/planning on doing it this year?
Anyone doing the moors the merrier 26th July, details here
http://www.alangreenwood.biz/mtm/index.html
Graeme,
I'm registered and hope to be there. Since it comes only two weeks after a very intense personal Ultra challenge I may be walking a lot, if I'm not incapacitated altogether
Good effort I'll see you there, probably somewhere near the back.
Malvern Midsummer Marathon tomorrow :)
Anyone else having a go?
I'm doing the White Bear Way tomorrow (and hopefully I'll find the directions soon - put them down somewhere ....)
Anyone doing hanging stone leap? (16th august , 24 miles) -
