North Fitzroy Sole Lundy Fastnet:
Northwest backing west 5 to 7, perhaps gale 8 later
Does this mean it may be a tad bumpy or is 7 or 8 just a little choppy, perhaps akin to those wave machines at the baths?
After last weekend's weather I was hoping to take my trunks but after consideration, I think I will leave them at home this weekend..........

it depends on whether you are going up wind or down wind.
up wind could rattle your teeth. don't forget to clip on with a harness.
Down wind could be great fun. just one long sleigh ride surfing the waves...
in 2006 we had 8-9 gusting 10 very scarey:eek:

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
A very entertaining weekend on the yacht down in Wales this weekend getting used to, er, being on a yacht!
Friday was messing about in the straights doing various exercises, water was quite sprightly beyond Hollyhead pier so fast tacking was quite fun.
Saturday started at noon due to a pretty adverse forecast that said something about easing in the afternoon.............so off we went to Hollyhead anti clockwise. Now I was looking forward to some bouncing about and as we approached Puffin Island it started to get bumpy and I was stood looking over the spray hood enjoying the rises and falls. As we neared the island it got quite calm so I decided to go for a waz thinking that was it for the bumpies..............it seems after we cleared the shelter of Puffin we got into the sea 'proper' on the tide with the wind against at around 7 knotts but with some other wind dial showing 34 and somthing about inflows and outflows meeting the tide - as I was below attempting to waz whilst bouncing between the sink and wall and hearing somthing about a wave that I heard gush down the stairs into the saloon (and on later inspection into my bag that was stored in the bilges that also got a lot of the wave). Anyway from this point on until getting safely behind the harbour wall at Hollyhead, the 'excitement' surpassed my expectations - I was so excited I threw up 4 times (that made 4 of us).
In contrast, this morning's 5am start was a gentle, scenic sail back round to Port Dinorwic completing a circumnavigation of Anglesey whilst eating bacon butties and supping tea - much more civilized.
I now sort of understand that this race has more to it (even for the runners) than just tarting off up a hill for a few hours..............

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
brings back memories. good stuff Ady
through the night is fun when you can't see any thing
-
Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Yeah - 'brings back' memmories for me too - those of leaning over the side with my hand trailing in the water (as the boat was so far over) feeding the fish with my bacon and mushroom breakfast.....
Then having to get off and run a marathon over Snowdon........GREAT

Looks suitably wild ........from  to :D
Brings back memories for me of some extreme sailing off Gibraltar last year.....you end up absolutely cream crackered.
Saturday was pretty windy .....must have been a bit of a baptism of fire .... or something else by the sounds of it.... going for a pee can be a bit tricky ;)

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Due to a stuffed achilles I am unable to run so have to reluctantly give up my place on the team. The team and logistics are all in place but a replacement runner is required as a matter of urgency!
Please PM me if you are up for it/further details......................

Sorry to hear that Ady - hope you recover quickly

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Ady...thats terrible. Really sorry mate. You have some taste of what you will be missing. Can't you go as 'ballast'??!:D
To my memory, a 'ballast' that can row all night, shin up masts to do various things to sheets and eyes, make continous butties and mugs o'tea, stuff wet sails into bags upside down in the pitch black, row a dingy and generally fetch and carry on demand without whingeing would probably be THE most valuable asset after the fibreglass torture chamber otherwise known as a yacht.;)

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Can I add this a possible opening.......one of the replacement runners for Wheeze and I has done his calf, what is it with replacement runners. Still hoping to do it though will have to make a decision soon. Potential opening therefore, watch and wait for now, let me know if interested and if Addy's slot has gone.

One of the yachts ended up in Burton upon Trent last year.
I think it was using one of Dominion's homing devices:eek:

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Madam Wen sailing well but a slow 1st leg run.
Ian - say 1 team comes off the hill back into Whitehaven and has to wait for the gates to open and another team comes back 2 hours later (and slower) and they both then leave the harbour at the same time does the 2 hour quicker run place the team 2 hours ahead as a whole or is that quicker run negated by the tide situation??

Overall the time is the same but it depends on when the runners dib in on the return.
if the runners are after winning the Hill trophy they will have to dib in as soon as possible at that point the 'sailing' leg starts even if the boat is in the harbour for a further two hours. If the skipper wants to win the sailing leg he can ask the runners to dib in just before they set sail.
Does this make sense

Yes, it was the overall bit I was trying to fathom - cheers.

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
looking at the positions any one of 10 boats could win depending on where the wind fills in from
-

Which boat were you going to be on Addy

Madam Wen. My replacement is in training for some ultra distance thing in the States but lacks speed but the sailors seem to be doing a sterling job.
-
Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
race is looking very close due to the lack of wind.
looks like Zlod is just in the lead but nothing in it at this stage. any one of 15 boats could still be first home.
I was expecting them to be sailing passed Jura by now and they still havent got passed the Mull of Galloway which will be fun with no wind to drive you through the rough water. A wide line may be best. at this rate it will be two more days to FW

Just checked the lead boats speed and direction and they are being pushed Back by the tide:eek: A few more hours and they be back at Whitehaven.:D
They need to find shallow water and anchor and wait for wind or the tide to change.
I hope theres more wind before they pass by here its at it's worst in June between 22nd-26th:eek:

Can't get the GPS info at work, bah! Not really supposed to be on here either though, but they haven't blocked it yet.

The tide has changed and the wind has picked up Ulula has broken clear. Zlod is in the chasing pack. looks exciting but must be very stressful for the fleet being so close on the last leg.
-
Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Looks like Starship, thats the boat Wheeze and I would have been on but for my crash:( are in that chasing pack not far behind the Zlod lot. I so wish I was running.....
-
Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Aye, just imagine it. After a day long cat and mouse chase up the Sound of Jura and Loch Linnhe we might have moored at Corpach 20 mins behind them with only 4,400 feet and 10 hard miles seperating us from a glorious victory!
Now, where have I heard that one before!!;)
Never mind Toff, Tour De Galles will be an epic alternative!

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
The Dark Peak(Janet McIver) /Accellerate(Caroline Bullard) combo with Greg Marsh( My old team Vlad) on Hazard have gone from 14th at Whithaven to a top four place so far.
Greg has lots of experience with 4 top three places in the last 4 years. this could be tight
