Hi BG,
Think its the Wensleydale sheet I am sure it mentions it on the website. It's definitely worth reccying the alternative route round Fleet moss, Ian DP picked me up here last year and he really helped me out, cheers Ian by the way. Also from Park Rash you will most likely be in the dark so this section would be worth a look, conditions where pretty grim last year and I think I was hallucinating a bit by this point !
I wore tracksters on the night stage last year and they were acceptable at kit check, they were ideal as well.
With regard to training - I got my distance up to 30-40 miles on the fells and about 60 - 70 miles a week, fell and road. I ran my long fell runs every other weekend and did quite a bit of cycling to increase my fitness, but reduce the impact on my knees. I did the three peaks as a warm up run 10 days before the event and to practice eating on the run and carrying the gear to get a feel for how I felt. On the event you just have to run your own race at your pace, keep eating and moving, don't stop for long at checkpoints and keep warm.
Regards
Karl
If you don't know the area I would carry the OS OL 2 & 30
It might be two maps but you will have a better idea what awaits you:D
The 1:50,000 pink Wensledale does cover the route but misses out a lot of detail just where you need it when it's dark!!
Hi Don
yes I remember you are you going again?
Thanks guys - I'll order maps and no doubt be looking for more advice on routes etc once I have studied the maps - does anyone have a list of all the checkpoint grid refs?
BG
OS sheet references a little different here - just want to check that I'm ordering the right maps?? Thanks

Many thanks.
Just checking the GR for the last bit of the Fellsman and just wanted to check I am going in the right direction.
SD 965 753 - Top Mere
Is this where the 2 bridleways meet near Sandy Gate and not actually at top mere gate which is nearly 1km to the east?
SD 987 757 - Park Rash
Is this the road crossing at Tor Dike and not anywhere near Park Rash which according to my reckoning is nearer SD978 741
Going to run the two ridges from Kettlewell to Cray then back along the Fellsman route to Great Whernside and back down to Kettlewell tomorrow so wanted to ensure that I had it right as the descriptions seem odd based on the GR
edit: seen this on the fellsman http://www.fellsman.org.uk/doku.php?...oint_locations
So just to check that this is where the actual CP's are
Top Mere that is correct, last year this was the hardest cp for us to find, in our group we had 2 good navigators myself and Robin Price (well know fellsman) and we both said we were there. it was very foggy, raining hard and very dark but no sign of the CP so we shouted. the CP was 5 m away and the guys were asleep in a tent with no light on:mad:
Park Rash is as you say by Tor Dike/Road and takes the obvious path up Grt whernside
The way off Buckden Pike isn't as obvious as it is on the map in the dark and in fog. Keep a keen eye and memorise it well.
Have a good run Tony
Cheers Ian, will do :)
Should be a nice run out before the bad weather kicks in. Rather be doing Kinder Trial though but was too slow with entry
The map on this site I believe is the OLD route. the route from Middle toungue now goes further North toward Stake Moss but kept the name 'Hell Gate' It was changed a couple of years ago to stop runners cutting the corner and crossing private land which was causing trouble. You then follow the byway down to Cray
Found the way off Buckden pike fine! Went along to the memorial cross and along a bit from there then picked up the bridleway.
Nearly went too far down though as the path that forks off from it is virtually non-existent. Can imagine in the dark it will be next to impossible.
If you have to ask how long the Fellsman is, then it is probably too long for you.
Seriously, the distance is not even half the story. You also have to take into account: ascent/descent, seriously grotty ground, navigation, fog and darkness.
A bit like 1 1/2 times the Derwent Watershed, but solo rather than with your mates.
JK (who must get round to entering for it some year)
What time of the day does it start as it does not mention it on the entry form?
9.00am which means if you sleep in the hall before the race you have to be up at a crazy time to have breakfast and catch the bus to the start. It used to start at 12.00 which meant you got a good nights sleep and more runners ran in the night, now the top guys are in the pub before nightfall:mad: ;) :D
Thanks
Does anyone have the route plotted on memory map? I am trying to get hold of the route (mmo file).
Thanks
Martin
i assume this route is still the correct one. I have not done it. sure others on here will be able to tell you.
Thanks wold ranger for the mmo file. There are a few sections where there did not seem to be an obvious route. The mmo route clarifies it. Is the route off Whernside flagged or can you take any route to Yordas?
Martin
I believe Woldrangers map is mostly correct but it is the old route, after Middletongue the route goes to Hells Gap SD 934 824 and then continues down the track(Gilbert Lane) to Cray checkpoint.
If you think it will be dark when you get here then recce this bit!!
They usually put a stile up for the day to cross the wall but last year it wasn't there. The route off Whernside wasn't flagged but LOTS of runners went wrong here last year so it may have been;) Watch for the little kink in the wall 724 790 and cross there even if the stile hasn't appeared.
You do need to pass through a marked gate at 714 791
Hope this helps
Ian
be recceing this bit this weekend if you fancy it? Probably cray to edge of fleet moss and back?
Be on Sat as doing the Ilkley Moor fell race on Sun
Thanks Ian for the extra information. Is Hell Gap 941 807? Also is the gate at 714 791 a definite "you must pass through here". A group of us did this section last Saturday and we split into two groups. I took a similar route as Woldrangers mmo and another group too a more direct line off Whernside and the other route was considerably quicker with no walls to climb.
AJF, unfortunately I have something else on Saturday, otherwise I would have like to recce that section.
Martin Hell Gap is a CP at the above GRef I posted earlier. it got it's name from the HG you mention but is about a mile further North, where the track comes out of the limestone pavement on the map.
From memory folllow the fence line from Middle Tongue until South Grain Tarn and keep on a similar bearing, if it's clear and dark you should find it easy as it has beacons on it which you will pick up as soon as you clear the first rise. now if its foggy it might get  ....:D
The gate is a compulsary route laid down in the race rules.
Ian
Sorry to stick my oar in, but Hell Gap is no longer correct, even though it's still described as such by the organisers. It is now Stake Moss. Grid ref 934824 is spot on. I have it plotted on Tracklogs.
Normally run mountain marathons with a 500 ml bottle and powder and fill up as I pass water. Some LDC water can be sarce and have had to use hydration packs in the past.
Fellsman - hydration packs or bottle it on the run??
Thanks
bottle as there are enough check points where you can fill up. :D why carry the extra weight of the hydration pack?
Now that conjures up an image  - I know the fellsman's tough but drinking your own would be sadistic!!
But seriously.....I prefer bottles - one on the shoulder strap and a half filled one in reserve in the pack pocket.
The problem with bladders is that you don't know how much you have left, you end up carrying loads of extra weight and they're a pain to fill (I always use one on the bike though).
Thanks lads, much appreciated - prefer bottle system myself when I can.
I used a bladder last year but probably only refilled it a couple of times as the roadside checkpoints have good supplies of water and juice I only filled it with about a litre to get me across the long sections between roadside CPs.
Got my hike number (15) today. :D
Hi there folks, new to the site and I'm after a little help. I'm doing the Fellsman next month and at the moment I'm sitting with the maps out going over the route. From searching back through the forum I see rumours of a nice dryish route over fleet moss, any one able to help me out with a few GRefs for this route and any other tips gratefully received. Sorry to be a pest on my first visit.
cheers
Rab
Hi Rab,
I'd dare suggest there's no such thing as dry line over fleet moss.
For me this year I'm going to tough out straight across the boundary fence line.
Last couple of years I've gone further south and always felt I was wasting time.
IMHO ;
The only dry way across Fleet Moss is to fly !
I'll PM you with some (vague )details when i get some time:D Well you need to do some work

Which stroke will you be using;) Back stroke would be best to keep it out of your eyes....
No need IDP - I'm sure I saw in the rules for this year that mask, snorkel and fins are mandatory:D
Thanks Ian, much appreciated.
I owe you a pint
SO, who believes the weather forecast?
The Barmy Broadcast Co are predicting fine weather the rest of the week, and over this weekend.
I hope they are right for once, a drier than normal crossing would be great for my first time  (no 289).
If your a fellow masocist see you there!
Perhaps, don't forget to put the sun cream on ;)
Fleet Moss I don't expect will be that dry ! I was on the back end of the route on Buckden Pike and Great Whernside on Friday and it didn't seem too bad up there. There was a bit of wetness about but alright :)
What times are people hoping for ?
I did 17:47 last year so hopefully shave a bit off this year:rolleyes:
