No seriously What a fantastic race. Loved every minute of that, even crawling on hands and knees up hill 6. Took it steady and got round in about 3:45 I think. Was spriting flat out for the last mile or so think I could have pushed a bit harder earlier on but as a relative fell novice it was great experience.
Agreed studmarks. The 'fellrunners'(?) that drop litter are bringin down our sport. In every long race these days there's litter, albeit small amounts, left on the fell. Someone must spot these people? Won't be long before someone gets caught and made an example of.Quote:

Much ado about nothing, I thought that was the major theme on the Forum:rolleyes: Seriously this is a major issue along with erosion, and other such impacts on the enviroment, and could effect the future running of this race and others over Pendle and elsewhere, and to use the conditions as an excuse isn't plausible in my book, it was a bit brisk but just a typical November day, runners should be prepared for the conditions carry the correct kit, and have the fortitude to use it. A true Fellrunner is someone with a love for the mountains and wild places, and should visit these areas with as little impact as possible leaving it for others to enjoy.Quote:

I have to say I was shocked by the amount of erosion on those steep descents. I assume a result of the gradient and the nature of the vegetation and soil. No doubt Geronimo is always like that, but do the other 'off the beaten track' descents recover between each year's Tour?

Leave as little impact...cairns...eroded trods...I doubt anyone deliberately droppped any litter.
I think we have to accept route alterations to allow recovery will now happen more and more, well done to the RO for doing that yesterday. Not sure what they can do about the geronimo descent, a classic route but not sure whether they should shift to another section of bank or just keep it there so at least the damage is concentrated in one spot, maybe the local conservation body/wildife trust/NT can advise.. Some erosion on a route is inevitable...afterall as the saying goes: take only photos..leave only footprints...
Just don't use the eroded path down Geranimo, its the slowest way down anyways.
Much faster to the right of it, and variety of lines should reduce erosion.
You'd have to be crazy to use that eroded path, asking for an injury.

Hi IanR Not condoning this practice but at least the wet toilet roll will desolve eventually unless it was Izal(showing my age now) but the gel packs wont and really look a mess along with the little bits that people bite of the top.Quote:

Know the feeling, Daleside. I was sorely tempted by the vacuum flasks some of the marshalls had tucked away. And the trail of abandoned jelly babies dropped in the latter half. Almost snaffled a few of those, but I wasn't sure I'd be able to get upright again.

Sorry, but I don't but the "cold hands" excuse for leaving your litter behind. So every time you drop some litter in winter it's OK to leave it as you've got cold hands ? Poppycock ! It's a friendly fell race, not the olympics. Pick your godamn litter up.
I sometimes doubt some of you have been in the fells. I dropped a power bar wrapper in the 2008 Peris. Going up Garn it blew away and down into Cwm Idwal.....what was I to do? Search in vain for the wrapper?Descend 2000ft searching for that one wrapper?Quote:

Maybe you didn't see anyone drop any litter deliberately but this litter business has become a regular feature at long races. It is a relatively trivial matter in the grand scheme of things but it just adds a little bit more to the negative effect that large fields of runners are having on the fells.Quote:

It's traditional for the organiser to get all the runners in, hand out the prizes, finish the stew, then tidy up and go down the pub for a two day bender. Then, as they're all volunteers, off they go to work. End of the week suits me fine.

Careful at the 3Ps. I'm a marathon runner (and cross country, too) by upbringing. 3P is about 6 miles longer than Pendle but there are only 2 very steep ascents on Whernside and Ingleborough, both are draining. The danger I found was in the temptation to over-do the easy running section after PyG to Ribblehead, then get tired on Whernside and get exhausted on Inglebugger.
I ran Pendle more sensibly in 3:36 than I ran 3Ps which took me a disappointing 4:45. It's worth your while looking at the Pendle results and comparing names across to the 3Ps.
